Chapter 87: No way out

"Is the mountain... yes, we are standing on a city grave. A formation had been set in place to draw all the aura into the room. So, boy! You have all the aura you can work with. And after a month, we will start with the filling of your stars!"

And so it began.

Malum went to the side and set up a shelf and began to fill it with cooking ingredients and, at the same time, a small kitchen where he could cook.

All brought out from the hole in his face.

Riven had the mind to ask him what really happened to his face, but he changed his mind. He really didn’t want to see the only person he was stuck with get angry with him.

When he was done, Malum came to meet him again. "Alright! I’m ready! Let’s start the training. You have aura in your core, right? Let’s get right into it. Fight me!"

Riven blinked. "I should fight you?"

"Yes. Don’t worry, I won’t fight back. I just want to test where your combat rank is right now. I will fight at your level as well. Hit me with everything you have."

"Alright."

Riven summoned a Grave Knight and Spartacus. His sword appeared in his hand and, without hesitation, the three of them ran at him.

Spartacus was the fastest, and he reached him before the others. His sword came down, the red light leaping and curving around like a whip.

But with a single small movement, the sword merely sliced the ground, and he was behind Spartacus—his figure blurring, his hand formed into a punch, ready to slam into the other undead’s back.

Riven’s eyes widened. Such speed. "Throw!"

The Grave Knight, this time, carried a spear and it threw it without hesitation.

Malum changed direction and caught the spear, then turned, bringing the sharp end down, but Spartacus had recovered and he slashed.

Sword and spear met with a dangling sound, and Spartacus was thrown back.

But Malum was already moving. "Take this back!"

He whirled and threw the spear at the Grave Knight’s head.

The spear shot off with a supersonic boom and was immediately in front of the Grave Knight—until a sword of green light came down and slapped it away.

Riven gritted his teeth, his body buzzing from the speed he had just used. "That was close!"

Malum had specifically targeted the head, which was most vulnerable for undead.

The Grave Knight picked up its stuck spear and ran behind Riven once more.

Meanwhile, Malum was playing with Spartacus. No matter how he swung his sword, it wouldn’t touch the Faceless’s undead. It was as if a layer of air was between them that was deflecting Malum away.

Suddenly, Spartacus paused and he drew more power. Riven gave it to him. His sword glowed a deeper red, and his legs seemed to swell before he exploded forward.

Immediately, he was in front of Malum, his sword raised high, and he brought it down with force. The sword swelled and expanded, turning into a storm-shaped sword.

The red in Malum’s face brightened, and two bandages shot out, crossing into a guard position in front of him.

Bam!

The attack hit like a hammer and the ground beneath them cracked, the bandages bent inward with the force from Spartacus’s attack.

"Oh? This is really impressive, Riven! Give me more!"

"As you wish!" Riven shouted.

The Grave Knight threw its spear again and, at the same time, gripped Riven and threw him.

Malum grunted as he was forced to take out another bandage to slap the spear away. By this time, Riven was already there!

The bandage shot out like a serpent, but Riven was ready. A blast of raw essence blasted from his legs and threw him up higher. He was lifted above the bandage but not entirely above Malum’s head, and his sword slashed at the head!

But things didn’t go as Riven planned. The image of Malum blurred, producing two figures of him—and what he slashed was nothing more than one of those shadows.

Empty air!

Riven scowled and turned to where Malum had run to. "You said you were going to fight at my level! But that last move was clearly not on my level."

Malum laughed. "Eh? And so? Let that be your first lesson, boy! Never trust your opponent! Their words might be just to make you lower your guard!"

Riven held his sword tighter. "Then did I win?"

Malum snorted. "Look around these walls, Riven. You won’t be winning any battles here. The last one was your ranking assessment, or that. This is the place you’ll have so many defeats that you will stop counting."

Malum nodded to himself. "I think it’s time now. I’ve adjusted myself to be above, but not so much that you will die with one hit. Come, let’s go." 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖

Malum said that as if he was fighting an opponent at the same level as him. Riven sneered. "Bring it on! I’m ready!"

He couldn’t be more wrong.

Malum took a single step... and he disappeared.

Riven’s eyes widened and he turned, hurriedly looking around, but even the man’s presence seemed to have vanished. His eyes were simply not keeping up with such speed.

Suddenly, the Grave exploded. Its chest, together with its upper body, exploded.

Riven’s eyes widened. He turned and found Malum standing there with his hand outstretched, his fist clenched. "Your undead. It’s not the typical. How do you have two that you can call without dragging around?"

But Riven could only stare with his mouth open. "How did you get here?"

Malum chuckled. "This is a speed that you can comprehend. I made it so that I’m using the strength of a low Auracrest. You can handle it, right?"

Riven began to sweat as he realized something very important that he had failed to grasp earlier. Malum must be a mad person—no, he was a mad person!

How else would it be explained? A low Auracrest against a rank two? Even Riven wouldn’t dare fight a rank three, not to talk of Auracrest rank—that’s a whole different realm.

He took a step back as something else hit him. There was no way out of the room.
