Chapter 54 - Registration

Seeing that Xu Qing was unwilling to explain further, Han Yu decided to let it go—for now.

'If she's such a big shot, I'll definitely hear about her from the others,' Han Yu thought to himself, glancing at her out of the corner of his eye.

He continued flying alongside Xu Qing as she rattled off more details about the sect. These were apparently things every disciple needed to know, and Han Yu tried his best to memorize them. But there was just so much.

'Is it normal to have to remember all of this?' he wondered. 'I could fill a hundred-page book with this alone!'

What Han Yu didn't realize was that all of this information was typically given over a span of several weeks—even months—to help new disciples adjust at a reasonable pace. But Xu Qing, in her quest for efficiency, had crammed it all into a single crash course.

They flew for about an hour before finally reaching their destination.

"We are officially within the Twin Leaf Peak Sect now," Xu Qing declared. "Remember to mind your manners. You already know what the punishment for breaking the rules is like."

"Yes!" Han Yu shivered, recalling the horrifyingly detailed descriptions Xu Qing had given of the sect's punishments. Some of them had sounded so bad that even being locked up in the town jail seemed like a luxury in comparison.

Some, he didn't even want to imagine.

"Come on, we'll get your registration done," Xu Qing said, leading him toward a massive hall at the base of Scholar Peak.

This peak handled most of the administrative work of the sect, and as such, the registration building for new disciples had been built at its base for easy access. After all, dragging a bunch of recruits—who might not even qualify as disciples—up the mountain only to send them back down would have been a waste of time and energy.

'This place is almost as grand as the royal palace posters I saw back home,' Han Yu thought, his eyes widening as he took in the sight before him.

Tall wooden pillars, painted a deep, auspicious red, stood in neat rows, supporting the high ceiling. Above, elaborate awnings cast elegant shadows on the people walking below. At the entrance, a large name board displayed the building's title, along with the sect's crest: a small sapling with two leaves sprouting from a mountain peak—the widely recognized emblem of the Twin Leaf Peak Sect.

Had Han Yu lived anywhere but the backwaters of his tiny town, he might have known about the sect before today. But fate had been kind to him. The sect had decided to expand its recruitment area this year, and by sheer luck, his town had been included.

"So many cultivators..." Han Yu murmured, glancing around in awe.

Elegant gentlemen strolled past in crisp, prim robes, while graceful women in flowing silks moved about, their presence as enchanting as a dream. For a moment, Han Yu wondered if he'd mistakenly wandered into a royal banquet instead of a sect.

Xu Qing approached one of the desks in the hall, where a middle-aged disciple sat reviewing some documents.

"Senior Sister!" The man noticed Xu Qing and immediately stood up, cupping his fists in greeting.

"I'm here for new recruit registration," Xu Qing stated bluntly.

"Of course." The man quickly retrieved a jade slip and a long register. "How many did you bring this time, Senior Sister?" he asked.

"One," Xu Qing replied.

"Just one?" The man looked surprised, finally noticing Han Yu. 'Did Senior Sister have that bad of a recruitment run? Only one recruit?'

He recalled how Xu Qing had barely scraped by in the last recruitment cycle after another recruiter had stolen her best prospect. She had managed to qualify for a reward, but it had been meager at best.

"He's a special recruit," Xu Qing added.

"Ah! A special recruit! No wonder." The man nodded in understanding. 'One decent special recruit is worth ten—maybe even twenty—regular ones.'

"His name is Han Yu," Xu Qing continued.

"Age?" the man asked, quill poised over the register.

"Fifteen!" Han Yu answered enthusiastically.

The man reached under his desk and retrieved a small stand holding a translucent orb. He extended it toward Han Yu.

"Place your hand on it," he instructed.

"Alright." Han Yu pressed his palm to the orb.

SHUA!

A soft glow enveloped it for a moment before fading away.

"Bone age: Fifteen years, three months, and eighteen days," the man recorded precisely.

Han Yu blinked in astonishment. 'They can figure out my exact age just like that? Cultivators really are something else...'

"Alright, next: cultivation base?" the man asked, continuing to scribble in the register.

"Seventh stage of the Body Tempering Realm," Xu Qing answered.

The man raised an eyebrow and gave Han Yu a once-over.

"Just that?" he muttered under his breath before activating a quick scan technique to confirm.

SHUA!

As expected, Han Yu was indeed at the seventh stage of the Body Tempering Realm.

The man wrote it down but also added a note in a separate section labeled "Remarks."

Updat𝓮d from frёewebnoѵēl.com.

Underneath it, he wrote: "Cultivation lacking."

'Ordinarily, the sect wouldn't even accept someone below the eighth stage, but since he's a special recruit, I suppose it's fine. Plus, he's close enough.' He decided not to question Xu Qing's judgment.

"Affiliation and background?" he asked next.

"Uh... Nothing?" Han Yu hesitated. "I'm an orphan. Parents died long ago."

"I see." The man nodded, jotting down the details.

Orphans weren't uncommon among recruits. The sect had taken in many before, and this wasn't anything unusual.

The man continued asking a few more routine questions, which Han Yu answered to the best of his ability. Five minutes later, the entire registration process was complete.

"Here," the man said, handing Han Yu a wooden token with his name engraved on it. "This will be your identification within the sect. Keep it safe."

Han Yu took the token, turning it over in his hands with curiosity.
