Supreme Devil Lord: I Can Refine All Energy-Chapter 69: Easing Leah’s Worries
After eating his fill while talking with Elena, Riya, and Vicky, Eric left the house.
Although he didn’t plan to stay out for too long this time, in case something delayed him, he didn’t want Elena and Riya to worry. So, he told them he might come a little late.
Elena, after telling him to be careful several times, let him leave.
When he walked out of the house, he once again felt those two gazes on him. Closing his eyes, he tried to sense where they might be but failed yet again, which made him sigh.
Then his eyes flashed, ’Let’s see if you can still hide from me after I increase my cultivation level.’
...
A while later, he arrived at the inn to check up on the Miller family and Rosalie.
Knock! Knock!
"It’s me, Eric." He called out after knocking on the door of the room the Miller family was staying in.
A moment later, the door quietly opened, and Liam appeared in front of him.
Eric let out a relieved sigh in his heart upon seeing he didn’t look too out of sorts.
"How are you holding up, man?" He asked,
"I’m good." Liam said before glancing back, "But Elsa and Mom, they... Sigh! Come in, see for yourself."
Liam let him in, and Eric immediately felt the sad and gloomy atmosphere.
Elsa was sitting on the bed beside her mom, holding her hand as if to show her she was there. Her eyes were red and puffy, a clear sign that she had cried a lot.
But she was still a lot better compared to her mom, who didn’t even seem to notice him entering the room and was listlessly looking outside the window.
Seeing him, Elsa tried to smile but miserably failed as tears started streaming down her eyes.
Eric sighed in his heart and walked over to them.
Sitting at the edge of the bed, he pulled Elsa into his embrace with one hand and let her cry in his chest while he looked at Leah, who seemed completely oblivious to everything around and just continued staring outside.
From his position, he couldn’t see her face but could imagine she must have a desolate look on her face.
As he gently held Elsa and felt her slowly calming down, he sighed again.
He wasn’t good at emotional stuff. While he could somewhat calm Elsa, it was mostly thanks to her feelings, but Leah held no such feelings towards him, so he had no idea how he could help her feel better.
’Let’s see if her status description can help me...’ He thought and willed the system to activate the <Inspect> skill.
[Name: Leah Miller]
[Cultivation: None] 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
[Battle Power: 3]
[Status: Extremely sad and worried.]
[Detailed Status Description: She is extremely sad because of her husband’s untimely death and worried about her family’s future.]
"..."
Eric stared at the [Detailed Status Description], speechless.
If the system was not going to give him some useful details and only had to state the obvious, why was it even there?
But then a thought flashed in his mind, ’No, that’s not the case. If she was someone unfamiliar, this would have been useful information.’
’...But it is not useful now.’ He inwardly shook his head.
After a while, when Elsa stopped crying, he gently patted her back, letting her move away from him.
He then tapped Leah’s shoulder. "Aunt Leah..."
Feeling his touch and hearing his voice, Leah broke out of her daze and turned her head toward him. Though she tried to put on a composed expression on her face, her eyes were still listless.
"Oh, Eric." She muttered.
Eric cupped her hand in his, and looking into her eyes, he seriously said, "Aunt Leah, I don’t know if I should say this, especially because I already told you this yesterday, but believe me when I say you are now my family, and I’ll take care of you all."
Leah was taken aback. She then stared into his eyes deeply, as if trying to see whether he really meant his words. When she saw the sincerity in his eyes, she felt her heart calming a great deal.
Although he had brought them to the middle city and said he would take care of them, she didn’t dare to believe him. It wasn’t because she thought he had said that just for saying’s sake but because she knew it would not be easy to take care of a family of three when he had just become a warrior.
So, she feared that when sometime later, he realized this, he would just abandon them. As for him saying he was her family—her son’s best friend and her daughter’s future husband—she knew he could very well disregard these things when he finally realized he could live a good life as a warrior if he abandoned them.
She had seen many people do this. Luke, Rosalie’s son, was a great example. Just to get into his lord’s good books, he didn’t think twice before deciding to give him his sister and mother.
However...
’He won’t do that. He will really take care of us.’ She could see this in his eyes.
While she was thinking this, Liam, standing on the side, frowned when he heard his words, "Is this what you should be saying now, Eric? Can’t you see the state Mother is in? Do you think these words will help—"
Eric calmly glanced at Liam. He didn’t find it strange that Liam got angry because he knew his words could be considered insensitive.
Before Liam could finish shouting, however, Leah shook her head while she gently caressed Eric’s head. "No need to be angry, Liam. I needed to hear these words, and now that I have, I feel way better."
Both Liam and Elsa were surprised before they became emotional. They understood that while their mother was sad about her husband’s death, she was even more worried about what was going to happen to them in the future.
Liam clenched his fists tightly. ’Only if I wasn’t so useless...’
...
After talking to them for a while, he left the room and walked toward Rosalie’s room, which was on the opposite end of the corridor—just one room to the left.
