Chapter 59: Trial of Severance III

The rush of heat, fear, and defiance collided inside her chest. She wanted to look away, to shrink beneath the coat that was meant to shield her, yet she could not. His presence demanded recognition, and she met it, ocean-blue eyes steady despite the tremor coiling in her stomach.

Lucrezia expected to find animosity in those eyes, the lingering resentment from the previous ordeal. She braced herself for anger and a cold reprisal, but instead, she was met with a dark, unguarded desire that felt... profoundly wrong.

Last night’s encounter resurfaced unbiddenly in her mind, and her breath hitched in response. Lucrezia could still feel his breath on her skin, his lips against her neck, and the warmth of his fingers brushing the small of her back, lingering in the depths of her mind.

"Careful," Lucrezia heard her speak, and she struggled to drag her attention to the woman beside her. "When the divine glamours are stripped off, he is reduced to a raw manifestation of essence, propelling his Sin like a drug. It constructs sensations unbearable for the acceptors, driving your mind into an irresistible spiral; pleasure sharpened into obsession, and awe curdling into need. It hollows you out until there is nothing left but the hunger he plants there."

The words tasted bitter as she said them, as though they had been borrowed from an older, darker knowing. Lucrezia’s gaze flicked back to him despite herself, heart racing at the sight of him.

Stripped of the finery of illusion, he was something far more dangerous than beauty alone could account for. Even with his mask, Lucrezia could discern the shape of his face; planes too sharp, symmetry too deliberate, and a beauty honed like a weapon rather bestowed.

Power clung to him like heat from the rising sunset, pressing against her senses until her skin felt too tight for her body.

"How can I prevent myself from being consumed by it?" She whispered. Her voice trembled despite her efforts at composure, but the question was spoken clearly.

"You cannot," The woman said softly, almost gently. "You are meant to witness, and not to intervene. What he carries and becomes when stripped bare is both trial and revelation. To resist it entirely would be to resist the truth itself."

Her heart dropped into the pit of her stomach. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

His mask tugged just slightly as his mouth curved, as if he could hear the warning that had been spoken despite the fixed chaos. And even more as if he savored it.

Her pulse skidded. Lucrezia forced her shoulders back, lifting her chin, refusing to give him the satisfaction of retreat. Last night had been a mistake, no, a lapse rather, and she would not allow it to define her. Yet her body betrayed her resolve, remembering with treacherous clarity the way that promise had sounded on his lips, and the manner her defenses had melted beneath his quiet certainty.

Lucrezia couldn’t deny the pull she felt in those impenetrable eyes, more open to the danger cogitated. No matter how much she attempted to deflect her eyes from his seemed impossible.

She wrapped her fingers tighter in the folds of her coat, grounding herself in the coarse fabric, in the here and now when his gaze tore from hers.

Air returned into her lungs, counteracting her in between the lure between her and her mind. The dangerous allure clouding her senses finally faded like dust, leaving behind confusion.

"Are you okay?"

Lucrezia heard her ask and nodded reverently. At least, she was now, she thought.

Admitting the chaos in her mind, a thought crossed her mind. If his Sin was stripped out, she wondered how vulnerable he was at the moment. How was he going to duel if his source of strength was expropriated?

"But, if his Sin is gone, if he is reduced to essence alone... how can he survive it?" Lucrezia asked, unable to contain the thought to herself as her eyes remained fixed on his figure. Even in silence, his presence commanded the space around him.

"Because what remains is him," She answered after a moment. Lucrezia’s eyes narrowed towards her. "He remains without titles, glamours, authority, but the core. His body will be tested, his reflexes, his strength, even his pain—but his essence... his essence endures. The arena will push, will tear, and will demand surrender, but it cannot corrupt what is truly his."

Lucrezia absorbed the weight of that knowledge with a chill down her spine. "Isn’t this a bit too much for a trial?"

The woman’s eyes remained fixed on the arena when she heard her say. She didn’t seem offended by her questions and rather answered without any complaint, which gradually, Lucrezia found natural.

"This is merely the beginning," She said. "The trial endorses phases that test the body intensely. In the eyes of mortals, it seems lethal, but the people here know better than that."

That was horrible, Lucrezia thought. But not as horrible as she made it sound. Her eyes darted around the tiers, noticing how the figures seemed... engaged by the scene. Her stomach knotted. How can this be entertaining in the eyes of the gods?

Realizing that every gaze in the amphitheater was fixed on the arena, Lucrezia felt another chill run through her spine and goosebumps on her skin. The trial had begun, though no fanfare announced it. It was only the subtle shift and collective tension in the air that made its commencement undeniable.

She gripped the edge of her seat, the cold stone pressing into her palms, and leaned forward just enough to see.

The obsidian floor gleamed with its intricate golden lines rippling faintly. The markings beneath the snow brightened when he crossed them, as though responding to his presence, and Lucrezia felt her chest tighten, a shiver threading down her spine as awe and unease collided within her.

From the dais, she could see his face clearly now. As dangerous as it was, he was calm and composed as usual. Those unreadable hazel eyes held no trace of anticipation or fear as he did not look back at the crowd or at the dais again. Vaeron stopped at the center of the arena and stood still as snowfall gathered on his shoulders. The silence stretched and no one dared break it when the arena answered.

Lucrezia watched as the gold lines beneath his feet pulsed once, and then twice, causing the snow directly around him to recede. It withdrew, sliding back in a perfect circle that revealed the obsidian floor beneath and the markings that flared brighter, resonating through the stone and into her bones.

Her hands clenched in her lap despite herself. She did not understand what was happening but she knew, instinctively, that the Severance of Form had begun.
