Survive As The Brute's Wife-Chapter 170: What She Must Do
"Forsaken?" Cathlyn asked with her eyebrows raised. "It was just a few human years. And forsaken is a strong word. Is that how you felt?"
"Yes, that’s how I felt, Cathlyn..." Alexandra let out a sigh. "I was broken and shattered to pieces in just those few human years."
"I am so sorry, Arimelda..." Cathlyn held her hand. "Mother and I were forbidden to check on you. I tried to be closer to you and stayed perching on the tree, but you were hidden from me. And when you never called for me or my help, I thought you were doing fine. Maximus thought you were doing fine too and... Oh, it must seem like an excuse. But I am truly sorry."
"Don’t apologize, Cathlyn. It was not your fault," Alexandra couldn’t bear to see the guilt in her sister’s eyes. "You said you were forbidden to meet me? So... our Father too?" she asked.
"Yes, It was a punishment mandated to us, our family in its entirety because we let our father act recklessly against you, pushing you to change the course of the humans. And it might seem as cruel to say it, but I think all the pain and sufferings you went through... It was your punishment for terrorizing the humans and causing harm to animals by turning them into monsters with your resentment."
Alexandra gulped. It was hard for her to accept. She was the one who went through all the suffering. Were the sufferings she caused warranted that much suffering for her? Was it fair?
But then she saw this from a different perspective. The sufferings she bore were unbearable for her probably because she was a human. In this life, she has turned human. And that’s what made all her pain more unbearable.
Humans are fragile. More fragile than she thought. And in that case, the punishment she got was fair.
For three centuries, the monsters she set loose, terrorized, hurt, and destroyed the livelihood of many. How many families lost their breadwinners to those monsters? How many soldiers gave their lives in their duty to fight the monsters? How did their families suffer after their death?
Thinking this way, she could see that the punishment she got was fair. The entity that was overlooking them all is fair in the judgment. And she didn’t want to complain.
And her father was tied to helping her too. Maybe that was his punishment. To watch her suffer and yet be unable to do anything to stop her suffering. That must have hacked his heart.
Alexandra knelt and bowed her head to thank whoever meted this merciful punishment on her. Although that entity was just punishing her, he was merciful too. Because if he was giving the same suffering she caused, she would have suffered for three centuries, not a few years.
"Thank you," she said, from her heart.
It was not her fault that she fell in love. But her father’s interference caused a lot of trouble. She made a lot of mistakes too. And that was why it is all fair.
"What do you want me to do next? What should I do with Inanis? I request you to be merciful and bless my marriage," she asked.
She is here, in a place where time can be manipulated. She knew she is in the presence of someone more powerful than anyone she knows. And if she was shown these things, she wondered if something is expected of her.
And she wasn’t willing to give up Maximus even if her sins are great. She was punished for her transgressions, and she thought she should be free of guilt.
She heard nothing, except for a cold breeze that whispered in her ears. She opened her eyes.
She saw the multitudes of planets in front of her. And with a pull, she was brought to a distant planet that looked like an unpolished emerald. There was water, and there were primitive lifeforms. She looked closely at the bipedal lifeforms there.
[Humans? There are humans elsewhere in the universe too?]
She was shocked.
When she looked at them, she got reminded of how the earth looked when she first came there. Humans didn’t have a fire then. They live in caves and wear leather and leaves to cover up their nakedness.
They need help.
"You want me to go here?" she asked. And there was no obvious reply.
But Alexandra could see that that was the implied message. She asked what she should do and this is what is shown to her. So, that should be the case.
[So, about the other two questions I asked.....]
As she was thinking about that, she was brought back. This time, she was back on earth. She was standing on the tallest dune of the Samah Arav desert with the Hashomer in her hand. She knitted her brows seeing the armor she was wearing.
Below the dune, she saw dust rising above. Two armies were fighting, or it could be three or more... She could see a lot of banners. The battle was so fierce. She heard the sound of hoofs to her side and she turned to her right.
[Rufus?]
The white horse that she used to ride in her previous life to battle was galloping towards her. And behind him was darkness rising.
She looked above as a broad shadow covered everything near her. It was Kefir and Sekwi.
She turned to her left as she heard the sound of huffing. It was Maximus. Wearing his majestic armor of glory, riding on Ithildin, he was galloping towards her. His face was covered with a faceplate and with the sun directly on his face, she could not see his eyes.
But he was not stopping.
Before she could figure out what was going on, she felt her arm holding the Hashomer move. And the next moment, before she was able to do anything, the sword pierced into MAximus’ armor and went right through his heart.
She could see nothing as the darkness that was rising from behind her, covered everything. She couldn’t see what was in front of her, but all she heard were the screams and calls for help from the soldiers.
She tried to slash through the darkness that was passing through a hurricane. But she couldn’t move. Her mana drained and she knelt on the floor.
The darkness swept past and even after the brunt of the hurricane has passed, light never returned. The whole place looked grey and Alexandra stood there in that place desolation ruled. Skeletons of humans and horses were scattered everywhere and dark creatures that were kept in the safety of the Brume Thicket were all set free and were feasting on the remains of the humans and animals.
[What is this? Is this the future?]
Dread filled Alexandra’s soul and she clenched her chest. If this is the answer to her last two questions, why does it not make any sense? Or is that she is deliberately not finding sense?
Is she supposed to kill Maximus? Or is this the result when she kills Maximus? Why would she kill Maximus? And the darkness that swept through was Inanis. This time, she couldn’t do anything against him and he destroyed everything.
[What does this mean? Please show me the path I should take...I am confused...]
Hugging herself, she knelt and begged for an answer. Tears streamed through her face. She didn’t know what she should do.
"Arimelda, you are back!"
The affirming voice and the gentle hand on her shoulder snapped her out of her reverie.
"Iorhael... I..." She stuttered, unable to say anything clearly. "I... It’s awful... Darkness and... What should I do?"
Iorhael saw the deathly pale countenance of Alexandra. Her face was void of color and her eyes looked pale like she saw death in the eyes. He pressed his fingers to her eyebrow. "Sleep!" he spoke in a commanding tone and Alexandra lost her consciousness immediately.
Iorhael carried Alexandra to the bed. He laid her down on the bed and caressed her forehead.
"What was shown to you, Arimelda?" he whispered. "Did you see what I saw? Did you see the end of the world?"
Rubbing his glabella he sat by her side and waited for her to wake up. She was drained of energy, and she needs a little sleep to replenish her energy. She has a long road to take.
Alexandra woke up after sleeping for an hour. She still was in shock. Her hands trembled remembering the feeling she had as the Hashomer pierced through the thick metallic plates and then passed through his flesh and ended up hacking his heart. She felt the last beat of his heart through her sword.
[How could I do that? I cannot do that!] 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮
Her heart trembled by the thought of it.
"There is one way to save Maximus from the clutches of Inanis, Arimelda," Iorhael said, offering her a bowl of porridge.
"How? How can I save him?" Alexandra was desperate to know that. She pushed the bowl aside. She was in no mood to eat.
"Eat!" Iorhael handed the bowl to her.
Alexandra shook her head, but Iorhael insisted once more. Alexandra realized that he won’t talk to her until she eats the contents of the bowl. She grabbed the bowl and swallowed everything in the bowl without any leftovers.
"Tell me, please," she begged him.
"You’ve turned pathetic, Arimelda," Iorhael said with disappointment. "Do you even know the spell I put in this bowl?"
