Survive As The Brute's Wife-Chapter 185: Back Home
Alexandra called for Maximus a couple more times, but he was not waking up. She checked his heartbeat and it was not bad considering that he is recovering from a serious injury to his chest.
Alexandra was not worried in the least bit. She knew he will be fine in due time. The Creator has promised her offspring, and he is her husband. He should be fine for her to have offspring.
She kissed his cheek, and hugging him, asked Rufus to take her back home. She opened a portal to enable a fast journey. Rufus, the loyal steed, took her where she wanted to be.
Alexandra’s heart filled with glee and a beautiful smile bloomed on her face as she reached the place her heart calls home. It was not the grand halls she grew up in as Arimelda—it is that old stone house in the middle of a farm.
[He has restored it!]
Alexandra kissed Maximus’ cheeks. The last time she was here, the entire place looked dark, gloomy, and dry. But now, the house was not dilapidated. It was repaired and was shining in its old glory. The oak tree by the house now housed a swing, like it used to do. Around the house, there were various flowering plants.
She could see some horses in a shed and plow. Some men were working on the lands around the house. Alexandra could understand that they are preparing for sowing. Her eyes watered as she took in the scent of the fertile soil.
[Everything is returning to how it once was!]
Rufus stopped by the door to the house. The men around helped her in bringing Maximus inside. She didn’t know who these men were. They were not speaking the language of Lethusia or Deberia, but they knew Maximus.
They spoke a variant of the Lathusian language and Alexandra could understand that they are calling Maximus their "boss". She didn’t mind those men. In a way, them not knowing who Maximus truly is, is good for her. She asked them to help lay him on the bed.
When she entered the house, she was more delighted. The place looked exactly how it looked in the past when her grandfather was alive. The bedroom was on the first floor as it was before, and her lips curved seeing the little partition that used to separate her room from Tubby’s room was not there anymore.
The first floor of the house maintained the same furnishings as before, but the bedroom was restored with upgrades. A canopy bed with thick curtains replaced the small cot she used to have and the height of the ceiling was raised. What used to be a small window now was big and had a window sill.
The outer side of the windowsill had small planters with flowering roses and the inner side had cushions on them. There was a small bookshelf near the window.
Alexandra had the habit of reading sitting on the windowsill when she lived in the Palace. And Maximus must have noticed it and built her a reading corner in this house too.
[Was he planning on bringing me here to live all the time?]
Her eyes ended up on Maximus, covered by the comfortable blanket and in a deep sleep. He slept through the morning. She helped bathe him and change his clothes. He slept through it all. But he is recovering and that is a good thing.
She walked closer to him and sat by the edge of the bed. The bed was not as big as the one they had in their room, but the mattress was very soft. The bed sank as she sat at the edge. She noticed his eyebrows twitching. It won’t be long before he wakes up.
She looked around. By how meticulously this place was restored with Maximus’ touch in everything, she wondered if he always was planning on returning here with her. He appeared to be very content with living the life of the Emperor, and she wondered if he truly was content.
It made a spring of joy bubble in her heart. If he wanted to be here, leaving his role as the Emperor to become a farmer, then that means that Inanis was the one who wanted him dead. He never chose death.
With a smile, her hand traced over the soft sheets covering the bed. It was then she realized something.
The bed is small. The bed is small!
A lump formed in her throat as her eyes clouded. She remembered how he willingly let her sword pass through his chest. She gets shivers thinking of that. She would never understand how someone would willingly forfeit their life just like that.
She did that. But she knew what was coming. Maximus had no idea what she was planning.
[Did he trust me that much? Or did I hurt him that much by raising my sword against him and he gave up? Oh, how abandoned he must have felt at that moment! But the house...]
It might be that he never planned on returning here. He just restored this house for her sake. It hurt her. But what should she do about it?
She bowed and kissed his hand.
[Don’t worry Max! You are fine. We are fine. Let’s leave the past in the past.]
Alexandra sat up straight as she felt the little movement of his hand. She observed his face and there was some movement in his eyes.
[He’s waking up!]
Alexandra’s face bloomed into a smile and she stood up and leaned closer to his face. Her hand ended up caressing his hair which was rougher than usual.
"Max... love..." She tried hard to speak over her pounding heart.
"Lexa..." Maximus’ parched lips uttered her name first even before he opened his eyes.
"I’m here, love... I’m..." Alexandra said, wiping the teardrop that fell on his cheek. "Sorry," she wiped her eyes with the back of her hand and sniffed.
Maximus slowly opened his eyes and looked at her. His mouth opened and his lips twitched as if he was about to say something. She tried to read what he was saying, but her eyes were clouded and she couldn’t see clearly. She wiped her eyes once more and tried to have a look at him, but her eyes clouded once more, blurring her vision.
[Oh, please...]
Alexandra’s heart pounded out of anxiousness. She got desperate and her desperation made her tears freefall.
[Is he fine? Why am I being so useless?]
The last thing he might remember would be her plunging her sword through his chest. Although she remembered him giving way to her sword, she has no idea why he did that.
[I should tell him that I did that to help him...]
