Sweet Love 2x: Miss Ruthless CEO for our Superstar Uncle-Chapter 98: Like Mommy and Daddy
The realization did not come with drama.
It started in the hallway outside Arianne’s study, where light shone from under the door, casting a narrow strip across the floor. Lily leaned against the wall, arms crossed like adults do during serious talks. Leo sat cross-legged next to her, holding a small whiteboard on his knees with the marker ready.
They had been watching—not all the time, not with suspicion, just paying attention.
Mommy and Daddy used to sit close together during movies. Lily remembered how their shoulders touched, even when there was space on the couch. She remembered how Daddy kept his arm around Mommy long after the opening credits. Sometimes, Mommy would fall asleep first, her head tilting without warning. Daddy would laugh and adjust the blanket without waking her.
Uncle Franz and Aunt Arianne did not look like that.
They sat close to each other and spoke calmly. They moved through the house without tension, but they did not lean on each other, touch, or kiss goodnight in the hallway.
"They don’t look like that," Lily whispered.
Leo considered this carefully. He wrote in slow, deliberate letters:
NOT SAME
He underlined it once.
Lily nodded, satisfied the problem had been named.
"Maybe they forgot," she said.
Leo paused again, then wrote:
HELP?
Lily’s eyes widened slightly. "Yes."
There was no sadness in it. Leo saw it as a practical matter. If things were different, they could be changed.
Leo flipped the board over and wrote again:
MOVIE NIGHT
Lily’s face lit up with certainty. "That makes people love," she said.
Leo nodded and wrote underneath:
LIKE BEFORE
The plan came together without more discussion.
–
Franz had been home for less than a day when the proposal arrived.
It came in the late afternoon while Arianne looked over documents at the dining table, and Franz worked on arithmetic problems with Leo. Lily entered first, with her hands behind her back.
"We’re having movie night," she said.
Franz glanced up from his worksheet. Leo remained silent but turned the whiteboard around so that both adults could see it.
TRADITION
The letters were uneven, written with care.
Arianne looked at the board and then at Franz. She showed no surprise.
"After homework," she said calmly.
Lily nodded, as if she expected this. She turned and walked back to the living room with purpose.
Franz focused on the worksheet again. Leo tapped the paper once to point out a wrong number. Franz corrected it without saying anything.
The plan continued without more discussion.
-
By early evening, the living room started to change.
Leo pulled the air mattress out of the storage closet with noticeable effort. He insisted on using the manual pump himself, and it took time. Lily watched him closely, crouching beside him with her hands on her knees.
"It has to be big," she said.
Leo nodded and kept pumping.
Arianne stood in the doorway for a moment before moving to the side table to make room for the remote and a bowl of popcorn. Franz came in soon after, carrying two folded blankets on his arm.
Lily looked up right away. "Not there."
Franz paused. "Where?"
She crossed to the center of the couch and removed one cushion, placing it on the floor.
"Like this," she explained.
Leo finished inflating the mattress and held up the whiteboard again.
CLOSER
The instruction was written in thicker strokes this time.
Franz looked at the board for a moment. He draped the blankets over the back of the couch and sat down quietly, positioning himself slightly off-center where Lily had pointed.
Arianne came over a moment later. Without the cushion, they were closer together. Their shoulders lined up with almost no space between them.
The television screen lit up the room with changing colors as the movie started.
Lily and Leo sat on the mattress in front of the couch. Leo lay on his stomach with his elbows supporting him. Lily sat up straight and looked back now and then.
Franz rested one arm along the back of the couch, not yet touching Arianne, his hand loosely curled near the top seam.
Leo noticed and took the marker, writing carefully on the whiteboard.
NOT TOUCHING
He held it up so that only Lily could see.
Lily frowned and turned on the mattress. She reached back without hesitation, took Franz’s wrist, and nudged it toward Arianne’s shoulder.
"That’s how," she said directly.
Franz glanced at her small hand for a moment before moving his arm the last inch. His forearm now rested behind Arianne’s shoulders, close enough that they could touch easily.
Arianne stayed relaxed. She did not turn away. She continued to watch the screen, and her posture softened a bit against the couch.
Leo looked at the setup and wrote again.
BETTER
He showed it to Lily.
She nodded, satisfied, and turned back toward the movie.
The film played on. Animated characters moved on the screen, and the room filled with bright dialogue. The lights in the living room were dimmed on purpose, leaving only the television glow for the four of them.
Halfway through, Lily shifted her weight and leaned against Leo. He adjusted to make room for her. The mattress creaked softly beneath them.
Franz’s hand moved down from the back of the couch to Arianne’s upper arm, the shift unremarked.
She did not look at him.
Her hand slid across the cushion between them—the cushion that Lily had taken away—and lightly rested on his wrist.
Leo noticed again.
He picked up the board and wrote with more force this time, pressing the marker down harder than needed.
KISS?
He held it up at chest level.
Lily glanced at the word and then back at the couch. "Later," she whispered.
Franz saw the board. His mouth curved slightly in acknowledgment. He reached forward and gently lowered the board so that Leo could see the screen again.
The movie continued.
The house quieted. Outside, it was dark on the estate grounds. No wind hit the windows tonight. The hallway in the east wing stayed calm.
Leo’s writing slowed down. The marker slipped from his fingers and stopped at the edge of the mattress. His breathing became calm, first shallow and then steady.
Lily lasted a few minutes longer, watching the screen before her eyelids began to droop. She leaned fully against Leo and closed her eyes without saying a word.
Franz waited until their breathing matched before moving slightly forward. He took the blanket and carefully covered both children, tucking it under Lily’s shoulder so it wouldn’t fall off.
Franz returned to the couch without breaking contact with Arianne. He lowered the volume slightly.
"They’re thorough," he said softly.
Arianne kept her eyes on the screen. "They remember," she answered.
Franz kept his hand on her arm. His thumb traced lightly along the fabric of her sleeve. Her fingers found his wrist.
The cushion Lily had taken off the couch lay on the floor, a bit crooked. The air mattress rose and fell as the twins breathed. The film played on, light moving across the walls without anyone watching.
Franz leaned back into the couch, pulling Arianne with him just a little. She accepted the touch. The space between them held.
The house settled.
No further instructions came.
Leo’s whiteboard was near his elbow, with the word KISS? still faintly visible in the dim light. The marker was beside it, with the cap missing.
Franz reached forward and turned the board face down.
The television light flickered across their faces as the scene on the screen shifted to a quieter moment. Neither of them moved away.
In the dark room, the space Lily had cleared remained.
