Chapter 27: Sirenโ€™s Song

They were still locked in a standoff. The two of them had made it clear they refused to give Aamon a room in the motel. ๐š๐ซ๐šŽ๐—ฒ๐•จ๐ž๐›๐•Ÿ๐š˜๐ฏ๐šŽ๐—น.๐•”๐จ๐—บ

Aamon had expected that. Life was harsh in an apocalypse like this. Kind people were rare, and most acted selfishly just to survive.

To Aamon, it was understandable. Sharing meant they had to give up some of their food for him, even though they barely had enough themselves.

"Iโ€™m only staying for one night. Why are you making this so difficult?!"

"No," the man replied firmly. "We donโ€™t know who you are. Leave now before I kill you!"

Aamon slowly narrowed his eyes, then stared forward. He raised his sword, threatening them.

"I can kill you faster than you can kill me!"

As the tension escalated, a mysterious sound echoed through the area, like a woman humming a soft melody.

Aamon frowned, lowering his sword as he looked around, trying to find the source.

I... recognize that voice.

The two in front of him suddenly shivered. They shouted at Aamon, their threats growing harsher. Even the woman joined in.

"Leave now or weโ€™ll all die!" the man snapped.

"Youโ€™re the ones whoโ€™ll die. Not me," Aamon replied.

"You donโ€™t understand."

The melody grew clearer. Louder. It proved the creature was getting closer.

Aamon felt a strange familiarity, like he had faced something like this before.

"Thatโ€™s a Poison-Scaled Siren!" the woman said.

"Siren?"

"Yes," she replied. "There will be fog. Anyone trapped in it will die!"

What she said was true. Aamon saw white mist beginning to form around them, still thin but spreading.

A siren? Isnโ€™t that a level 2 monster?

"HEY!"

"I donโ€™t want to die. Iโ€™m bringing you inside!" the man shouted.

"Nicholas! Open the door!"

Aamon turned and rushed inside as a young boy, wearing gloves, opened the motel room door.

He made it in and saw the inside was messy, not dirty, but filled with food supplies and various tools.

Moments later, the two followed him in and shut the door. The man locked it and closed the curtains.

"You almost got us killed!"

Aamon stayed silent as the man cursed right in front of him. He glanced aside and saw the woman emptying her backpack, filled with food and drinks.

"Have you ever tried killing that monster?" Aamon asked.

"No one here understands this world," the woman replied, tossing him a can of beer. "We donโ€™t take risks."

He caught it, opened it, and looked forward again. The sirenโ€™s melody was getting louder, yet the three behind him remained calm, as if this was normal.

They acted like encounters with the siren were routine.

"How many are there?" Aamon asked.

"No idea. No one has ever known," the woman replied.

"Is that the monster that killed the people in the other motel rooms?"

"You talk too much! Weโ€™re already terrified of that siren. Can you just shut up for a second?!" the man snapped.

"I talk because I know I can kill them," Aamon replied.

The two of them laughed. Aamon frowned, confused. There was nothing funny about what he said.

"Whatโ€™s so funny?"

"Nothing," the man said. "Itโ€™s just... everyone who died said the same thing."

"I can kill that monster easily."

"And in the end, when the song fades, we find their bodies lying outside in horrible condition," the man replied.

"I see. So thatโ€™s why you keep hiding in this hole like rats?!" Aamon snapped.

"HEY!"

"I let you in. Show some manners, asshole!"

The man stood up and pointed at him. Aamon clenched his fist, wanting to kill him.

But he didnโ€™t.

Not because the man was stronger, but because that family needed someone like him.

"Fine."

Aamon stopped arguing. He chose to sit quietly and closed his eyes.

The sirenโ€™s melody continued, as if the creature was circling above the motel, waiting for fools to challenge it.

Time passed. Minutes turned into hours.

Eventually, the melody faded, a simple sign that the siren had left.

That night, it was 11 PM. Aamon was the only one awake, alone in the dark silence.

He stood up and pulled the curtain aside, looking outside.

The area looked the same, but now there were monsters roaming around.

The siren had drawn in other level 1 monsters.

Aamon summoned his sword and raised it. He moved quickly, activating both his assassin and regular skills.

The clash of steel against the thick hide of wolf monsters echoed through the area.

The woman woke up, alerted by the sound. She got up and walked to the door, shocked to see it open.

"Good thing the sirenโ€™s song stopped..."

She opened the door, and her eyes widened even more.

Aamon, the man they had let in, was fighting seven wolf monsters alone.

One by one, his sword cut them down.

But one of the wolves suddenly charged toward the open door after noticing her.

Aamon turned, startled. The woman had become its target.

Aamon vanished into stealth and fired a metal needle. It struck the wolf, slowing it down.

The woman panicked and slammed the door shut, locking it. The loud noise woke her husband and child.

"What happened?"

"That man... heโ€™s killing monsters!"

"What?" the man said, shocked.

He pulled the curtain aside and looked out. Aamon stabbed the wolf with his sword. The monster collapsed, dead.

Aamon stood there, his military outfit stained red with blood.

No monsters remained in the area.

The man swallowed hard, opened the door, and spoke.

"How... did you kill all those monsters by yourself?"

Aamon turned, his face covered in red blood, the wolvesโ€™ blood.

"I already told you," Aamon said calmly.

"I knew I could kill them."

They were still in shock, unable to believe he had defeated them all so easily. It was clear Aamon was on a completely different level.

The man began to respect him. The child started admiring him. The woman slowly began to fall for him.

But Aamon showed no reaction.

What he had done was normal to him. He had only ensured the area was safe, for himself and for them.

"Are you going to hunt more monsters?" the woman asked.

"I donโ€™t know," Aamon replied. "There are no monsters left in this area."
