Chapter 9: New Zombie Encountered!
They were off, they left the building and unfortunately for them, there was no car in working condition around so they could not use it to run.
Jason walked behind Rachel, he admired the work of God which was her ass and this was the silver lining to such a harsh reality.
He noticed Rachel was going in a specific direction like she knew where she was going, and Lillian followed with full determination. Jason didn't have a choice and decided to follow them even though he could split right now with no consequences.
The bag was a bit heavy, Jason strapped it on both his shoulders to support the weight evenly but he was a bit worried that he was the only one left without a weapon.
"Where are we going?" Jason asked but he got no response from Rachel, Lillian instead took it upon herself to explain.
"You must have been living under a boulder not to know... We have refugee centres designated in case of emergencies and that is where we're headed," Lillian said.
Jason found this a bit absurd because that would be the worse place to be as if the virus breaks out there, then fatality rate would increase by a whopping 70%.
That was a risk that Jason wasn't ready to take because he had too much to lose and that was his life. He hoped his parents had bitten the dust, he hated them with a resolve that would make even the devil smile.
"H-Help me!" A girl called out, she had tattered clothes and blood smeared on her body.
Jason looked horrified because it looked like she just escaped an attack but Lilian and Rachel didn't share this worry.
Jason watched Rachel give her younger sister a knowing look as Lillian placed her hand at her back in preparation, Jason kept quiet because he didn't know what was happening.
He wanted to see what kind of girls he was escorting and Rachel whispered to Jason.
"Be on guard, she is not alone!" This warning put him on edge.
He recalled that Lillian used a similar tactic on him.
Jason waited for Chronos to say something but nothing came, the system was quiet and this told Jason he could make this decision himself without Chronos interfering.
Jason began to wonder what made Chronos act, why didn't he react to every situation and only a select few?
Jason had all the time in the world to figure it out, he just needed to survive and that was his priority. Jason could see faint movements behind the girl and realized that Rachel was right.
The moment this girl reached proximity, she must have realized that her strategy wasn't going to work so she backed away slowly.
The look on her face changed and out came one other person with an axe.
Jason knew there was no way in hell that he could fight someone proficient in weapon handling.
He wanted them to run because that would be the logical choice yet Rachel and Lillian weren't moving. They were looking right at them intending to fight.
"What the fuck are you two doing!? Let's go!" Jason cautioned but his words fell on deaf ears, the sisters weren't paying him any attention.
Then the growling began, this was the only thing that made the sisters reconsider fighting and out came multiple zombies.
It wasn't just one or two, it easily numbered up to ten but these zombies looked like they were dead a tad bit longer than the ones that Jason saw earlier.
Jason watched the sisters back away from the girl but Jason saw why everyone was so panicked. They just found out the virus doesn't just affect people otherwise, why was there a K9 dog with a huge hole in its torso among these zombies?

[Type: Animal Zombie]
[Stats: Speed: 10, Strength: 10, Intelligence: 5]
[Threat: Extremely High]
[Description: Animal Zombies are nonhuman victims of the zombie virus, appearing in many forms based on their species.]
Jason was astonished by these stats and he knew if the speed was this high then there was no way that they could outrun the dog and Jason knew that this was the dog being slow.
But he wondered why he could easily react to the earlier zombies despite them having higher stats, he should have been outpaced and overpowered easily or was this the glitch?
He wanted answers and Chronos was about to give him those answers.

Jason now understood why he could not dodge the zombie when it was close but could somehow hold his own in terms of strength despite losing that battle due to his wrist tensing up. fr eewebn ovel.com
It had nothing to do with his strength but rather his stiff body but Jason wanted to know one more thing and that was how the ranges were determined.
[Ding!]
[Close-Range: 1-5 Meters. Mid-Range: 6-10 Meters. Long-Range: 11-15 Meter.]
"Don't move!" Jason whispered to the girls because this dog was not one that could see or it would have charged at them the moment it was within proximity and the fact that the girl that had backed away from them served as a barricade between them and the zombies was somewhat refreshing because it would have to go through her to get to them.
And their saving grace happened, the leaves rustled as the man with the axe was nowhere to be seen. He ran and the dog gave chase. Jason was surprised that it was that fast despite not running at full speed but the moment it faded into the bushes.
They ran in the opposite direction with the much slower zombies giving chase but they weren't a threat in terms of movement so it was easy to outrun them.
Whatever it was, they had managed to escape but Jason knew that the zombies that they would face in the future would be far more difficult than he thought.
