Chapter 115: The Shadow Lord

"So, what exactly are you saying?" Severin’s voice was calm.

Anansi looked at him. "Sector Delta was built at the same time by a kingdom in the Divine Continent and your empire. It was created by one of the legendary Heroes."

"The facility was made to lock something in."

Severin took a deep breath. If what Anansi said was the truth, then things were even more delicate and dangerous than he thought.

Anansi smiled. "At the same time, the system was used to create a shield. But what power is still powering the shield until now?"

Severin stiffened. "Surely, surely!"

Anansi chuckled. "There is a reason why the humans like the old research facility. They have the system in them; they are also the most easily corrupted."

"The thing that is corrupting everyone must be in the research facility, and to think that is where the ECF is. What a mess. I must take a look at the facility."

"So, the ECF are dangerous," Severin finally said after a while. By this time, his food was entirely cold, but he ate it anyway.

"Yes. I do not know what they want with you. But this is not the first time they lure people like you away," Anansi said.

Severin looked at the man. "Why are you telling me all this? Your stories are as much of a weapon as you yourself. You are telling me the stories to guide me somewhere."

Anansi flashed a smile. "I need you to take a look at the old research facility for me and then tell me the story that you see. Once upon a time, I heard a story about what is down there, and I tried to use the powers. Well, it did not go well."

Severin raised his brows. Anansi was hiding something, but he did not interrupt.

"The same goes for the story I knew about the Shadow Lord. I think they are related."

"Shadow Lord and the ECF are one and the same?"

"Their head might be the same, but the body is not. Also, I think the leadership of the two are at odds with each other."

Several calculations spun in Severin’s head, and he came to a sharp conclusion. If they were one and the same, that meant Shadow Lord was one of the subordinates, or even the thing under the old research facility.

They might be at odds, but at a time, their goals might be one and the same. Or they might be secretly working together under the table.

Severin’s eyes narrowed. So, what happened to all the people who were sent back through the door?

"It seems I really have to check things out, but first things first."

"What about the other people who were following us? They are not ECF, are they?"

Anansi’s eyes turned ugly. "They are Shadow Lord’s people."

Earlier.

In a room cloaked with darkness, an elevated throne sat at the center, and seated on it was a man filled with pain.

His head was shaved smooth, but the skin of his head was dried and pressed tightly against his skull. His body was just as thin, his ribs showing sharply on his chest, the flesh on his stomach wrinkled and shriveled.

His eyes were red and continued to drip with black tears. He wore oversized trousers that were too big for his bony self.

But it was his face that was the most horrific. It was shaped into an expression of such pain that it made the heart of those who stared at him tremble.

The Shadow Lord.

Surprisingly, though, his voice was smooth and sharp, filled with such pain as if he was holding every hurtful thing in the world in. "So, you left him and came here."

A shadow stood in front of the Shadow Lord.

The shadow was tall, of a slim build and arrogant standing. The shadow’s hands were folded carefully in front of it as it stared at the Shadow Lord. "Yes, my lord."

The shadow had Severin’s shape and looked suspiciously like him.

The Shadow Lord shifted on his seat, his bones making a creaking sound as they rubbed together. The black tears on his face began to fall faster. "Explain again. From the beginning."

"When I was still in the human world, I was given consciousness and intent. The seed of despair was planted in me. I was still attached to Severin then. But as we crossed the distance between the worlds, something strange happened.

"The way was twisted, and we were pulled in different directions. We passed through an unfamiliar place. It was just for a second, but we saw something that seared into our minds. We saw a beast with wings of darkness that blotted out the world’s sun and eyes that pierced the shadow.

"I knew then that if it saw the seed buried in me, it would want it, so I hid it."

The Shadow Lord sat up, his hand tightened on the edge of his chair, his voice coming as if from the tortured. "Where?"

"I buried it in Severin’s body. He is now the one carrying the seed of despair," the shadow finished. Its voice had no emotion, as if it was trying to mimic Severin.

The Shadow Lord took a deep breath that made one of his ribs crack into splinters. "Severin, he is here, right? The first visitor we will be having."

Suddenly, the shadow tilted its head and frowned. It twisted and flickered as if an invisible current had hit it. "Wait! This is not where I should be. The seed of despair is not meant for you!"

The Shadow Lord smiled. With the way his face was shaped, the smile came off as a mocking grimace. "Soon, I will devour the seed and then eat him as well, and then I will be the true lord of the shadows!"

Severin’s shadow looked up, its face blank. "I, we, the Lord of pain?"

The Shadow Lord reached out, and tentacles of living shadows reached up and bound Severin’s shadow. He said to empty space, "Bring me this Severin at all costs. I must feast!"
