Chapter 166: A Reignhart like this— I

"Congratulations. You won," Miret said. There was a strange tone in his voice that only Severin understood.

They were now in the small shed.

Severin had cleaned himself up a little with warm wet cloth, but even then he still smelled like blood. They sat facing the guardian speak.

"I didn’t expect it... that you would win so easily. There was, after all, only one A-ranked among you," Miret said.

Severin raised his brows. "Let me guess, you are going to pull our files because you’re now taking us seriously?"

Miret at least had the grace to appear sheepish.

Severin sighed. He was tired and he was in pain. The power had taken its toll on his body more than he expected, and even though he didn’t use the twenty percent power to do anything over the top.

But his face was still expressionless. Only his eyes had a feverish tone to them as if the pain had almost made him mad. "Let’s do some introductions. This is Derrick Vance, Serena Ashford, Celia Hartwell, Julius Crane, and Ethan Aldrich."

Miret stared and stared.

"Ethan Aldrich and Julius Crane. Aldrich and Crane." Veins appeared on the dead-looking face of Miret and they twitched as he stared at Severin. "They are important nobles! Why do you bring them here!"

Nobles. In the Empire, it meant a lot of things, but most importantly, it meant power. And it’s the type of power that can’t be faked.

It’s even more brutal to be a weak noble than to be an ordinary person.

They can raise private armies and their Etherion users are strong.

Even Miret knew that there are some people that shouldn’t be offended. Especially the Crane. They might be a small family, but they are big movers. They are very dangerous. Miret should know, he’d lived very long.

’...and they’re on vacation... anything that happens to them can’t be shoved on Academy’s accident... and I’m the one that invited them over to Isolde Dusk... well played, Severin, well played...’

Miret smiled sweetly. "Except for Severin, you are all dismissed from all and any activities in Isolde Dusk. Only he will participate in the fight. In fact, I’ll be detaining you all to my house until the end."

Severin frowned. He was planning to make Miret a little afraid and possibly treat them better. That was why he just named his team.

It’s a delicate balance.

The reason he didn’t tell him in the first place was because he didn’t want Miret to back out, and he guessed that he wouldn’t check his team record since he only had eyes for Severin.

Now, he was trying to change the situation.

Severin thought about it.

Should he allow his team to participate? The answer came easily. "We came here to fight, Miret. You won’t deny me and my team the need to grow stronger."

Miret scowled. "You want to put me in trouble with their family? I can provide another way for them to train."

Severin shrugged. "You said so yourself, don’t you. We help you out and you help us. Win-win situation."

Miret narrowed his eyes and then he said slowly, "Severin Reignhart. Can we talk privately?"

The others went outside.

Derrick continued to look at the shed with a narrowed, conflicted look on his face.

"What are you thinking about?" Serena asked.

Derrick crossed his hands in front of his chest. "I know him more than you guys. I used to bully him... what? He was weak, very pathetic. But then he suddenly changed and now... he’s growing astonishingly stronger!"

For Derrick, he viewed Severin as someone he could bully, and then later, a benchmark to his power. In the team, they were both weak together. They were the weakest.

But now.

Things changed and it wasn’t gradual.

Severin went from weak to strong so fast they didn’t even notice.

"Isn’t that a... good thing?" Julius asked carefully.

Derrick’s face squeezed together. "It should... but, what if he’s now stronger than us? Too stronger?"

Julius sighed. "Derrick. Who do you think the leader is? Haven’t you been studying his tactics since? How do you think he got this strong? It’s not difficult if you retrace what he’s done since."

"What are you talking about, four eyes?" Derrick asked.

Everyone was looking at him as well.

Julius sighed. "Everything he’s been doing is for power. He’s building power. Gaining more power. That’s what his every move is all about. He cuts away things that threaten his power and adds things that will increase it.

"Us, the House. Everything."

Ethan looked at Julius flatly. "Are you saying he’s going to cut us off if we’re not adding to his power anymore?"

Julius shrugged. "More or less."

A strange emotion filled the air. It wasn’t shock. It was more of a bubble bursting. It was a strange feeling. It was relief mixed with sadness. Something they’ve all had at the back of their minds was finally said out loud.

"Why did he gather us in the first place? We... we were weak, most of us." Celia didn’t seem to understand.

Derrick snorted coldly. "I get it now. He gathered us because we were weak. He couldn’t get the stronger people to follow him, and he could use us since his power can boost us."

Serena swallowed. "Are you saying now that he’s powerful, he might have no need for us?"

Julius adjusted his glasses. His eyes were cold, very contrary to his usual self. "I have the Crane family name and Ethan has the Aldrich. He might still have use for us. But for you... well."

There was silence.

Derrick laughed without amusement. He looked around the blood and gore around him and he smirked. "Oh. I think we just have to increase our power and he’ll have use for us. Face it. It’s a brutal world. How many of you keep things that are weak?"

Julius sighed and adjusted his glasses. "The one that chases after power always. I don’t think it’s that simple."

Ethan sighed and a solemn mood set around them as they stared at the shed. "It’s not that simple."
