Chapter 171: Caskets of pain

"Severin Reignhart," Head Instructor Darius Faulkner said again for what must have been five times in one hour. He stood by his desk and fumed.

He couldn’t believe that he was outplayed and outsmarted so much so that he let him get away from him. "I should have followed him personally!"

"But I don’t think he was ever Severin Reignhart to begin with," he muttered to himself. His single eye flashed with killing intent, and the room was filled with the buildup of his power.

"And that Miret and his Isolde Dusk, why are they butting in this matter for?"

He didn’t understand. "It’s not like the Isolde Dusk is still loyal to the Reignhart. Wait... Miret is an immortal. Could it be that he’s secretly loyal to him?"

Darius Faulkner stood and began to pace around in his office, his eyes narrowed and troubled. But then someone knocked on his door and pushed it open.

It was a tall man, dressed in black and walking with a limp. He carried a metal cane in his hand. "Ah! If it isn’t Darius Faulkner!"

Darius had already sensed the man far before he opened his door, and he didn’t stop pacing. He only said, "Gavric."

The newcomer, Gavric, laughed, and it came out with a metallic ring because of the metal that replaced his lower jaw, which was ripped away by a monster.

"Darius! It’s been so long since I saw you. How have you been? How’s the Academy? You look troubled!"

Darius paused to glare at the man. "Troubled? Are you sure that’s how you think I am?"

Gavric raised his two hands and took a step back, his body doing a fake shiver. "You’re just as scary as always! Not true, but still!"

Darius sighed. There was a reason why he hated Gavric, and it had nothing to do with the fact that the other person was much stronger than him. Absolutely not.

They are in the same Advancement Stage, but their talent abilities are ranked differently. Darius is an A, while the man in front of him is an S.

He is strong.

"Shut up," Darius muttered.

He walked back to his seat and sat down. "You’ve been told then?"

Gavric nodded. "Yes. That you fucked up so badly that they now needed to include us in retrieving the package."

Darius stiffened. "I didn’t fuck up. I was given incompetent soldiers! The Headless Knight let a Scar member best him!"

Gavric snorted. "Your mission is to secure the package. It’s a mission given to you. It doesn’t matter what happens or what others do. You still failed your mission."

Darius was rigid, but he didn’t say anything. After a long time, he finally shook his head. "You are now part of my ’soldiers’. Don’t let anything go wrong this time, Gavric."

"Don’t call me that. It’s not my real name," Gavric said almost automatically.

Darius shrugged. "For the duration of this new mission, it is now."

Gavric belongs to an organization known as Nameless. It’s an organization known by the Emperor, but it wasn’t official, and everything they did couldn’t be traced back.

The members didn’t exist.

They are also known, secretly, as the illegal part of the Empire.

And now, they have a new mission.

Miret took them back to his apartment.

"What type of training are you going to give to us, Lord Miret?" Julius asked.

Miret snorted and looked at all of them coldly, his gaze resting on Severin last. "Since you all insist, and Severin already made it as a deal with me, then I will train you, but on my terms."

"Is this the point where you bring out an ancient long-lost method of training?" Julius asked, waving his hand. Everyone turned to him, and he coughed, smiling. "This is just something that’s common in books. You know, immortal having ancient methods to teach..."

His voice died down when none of them smiled back. Either they didn’t get it or refused to get it. Either way, he cleared his throat again and kept quiet.

Miret continued. "I’ve trained a lot of people throughout my life, and there is only one way to train an Etherion user to the best. It is to train them with their life on the line.

"Etherion users evolve and grow when they are at their life’s end. When their lives are threatened, that is when they bloom the most. And that is what I’m going to do to you.

"Follow me."

He led them down underground, beneath his main house. There was no light, and yet they all saw clearly.

He led them down a hallway, and on either side of them were prisons with steel bars and prisoners looking at them from within.

"You have prisoners here?" Serena asked in a hushed whisper.

"Of course. Do you think I want to be wasting my time going into the street to grab them when I need one for my experiments? I don’t have that time," Miret said casually.

They shuddered. They realized then that what Severin said earlier was true. The independence of the Isolde Dusk prisoners was nothing but an illusion.

They turned corners and walked some more until they reached a large room.

The room was big and kept very neat, but the mere sight of what they saw in the room caused them all to shiver.

Severin smiled. "So you do have ancient training methods after all, Lord Miret."

Miret’s eyes narrowed, and their coldness touched Severin as they met him, but he merely shrugged as he looked around.

Caskets. That’s what was arranged in neat rows in the room. Metal caskets that were covered in glowing runes. They were all open caskets. Some of them were empty, but a few had people sleeping in them, their faces seemingly calm, but their eyelids flickered wildly.

Severin grimaced. He could feel pain flowing from the people in the caskets—a lot of it—the reddish glow filling the air like smoke.
