Chapter 7: Gauntlet

ยซAaaah, finally,ยป Arielle sighs. ๐Ÿ๐š›๐•–๐šŽ๐•จ๐—ฒ๐›๐š—๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐•.๐œ๐—ผ๐—บ

She stretches and lets out a long sigh of relief, while the five of usโ€”me, her, Viktoria, Selene, and Jasmineโ€”walk through the corridors of Astralea.

ยซProfessor Laxarโ€™s Magical Theories classes are such a drag... if he werenโ€™t ridiculously hot, Iโ€™d fall asleep within ten minutes,ยป she adds with a yawn.

ยซYou can say that again!ยป Viktoria agrees. ยซBy the end, I want him to fuck every hole in my body! Jade already said he wouldnโ€™t mind.ยป

She shoots me a provocative glance.

ยซStill going on about this?ยป I mutter, annoyed.

ยซUm... Jade...ยป Jasmine timidly gets my attention. ยซI finally finished the poem I told you about a few weeks ago... if youโ€™d like, I could read it to you.ยป

I nod, more curious than I thought Iโ€™d be. Sheโ€™s about to open her precious blue notebook when Arielle jumps in first.

ยซJade, Jade! I wrote a poem for you too! Want to hear it?ยป

A bad feeling creeps over me... Arielle clears her throat.

ยซJade, my heart beats quick,

may I take in my mouth yourโ€”?ยป

ยซARIELLE!!!ยป Jasmine cuts her off sharply.

ยซWhat? You didnโ€™t even let me finish reciting it,ยป Arielle grumbles.

ยซPoetry is serious! I wonโ€™t let you disgrace it like that!ยป Jasmine scolds her, clearly upset.

ยซOr what? Youโ€™ll dedicate a sonnet to me?ยป Arielle snaps back.

Viktoria and Selene burst into laughter while I struggle to keep mine in out of respect for Jasmine, who doesnโ€™t look amused at all. Jasmine clenches her teeth, fists trembling.

ยซNow youโ€™ll see... Elemental Invocation โ€ข Earthโ€”ยป

ยซSTOP! LEAVE HER ALONE! PLEASE!ยป

The playful fight is cut short by desperate cries from a girl echoing around the corridorโ€™s corner.

ยซCome on, Rebecca, let us have some fun with your friend...ยป

ยซYeah, donโ€™t be a buzzkill, just a little feel. We need to give the foreigner a proper welcome...ยป two male voices jeer right after.

I turn the corner and spot themโ€”Luke Finghan and Eirik Aelthorn, pathetic third-years. Their victim lies on the floor: Anastasia Krasnof, a girl with snow-white hair cut to just above her shoulders, her right eye hidden by her bangs. Sheโ€™s Rebeccaโ€™s classmate from the frozen kingdom of Volgradia. Her uniform hangs open at the front, wrinkledโ€”โ€”clear proof of the abuse sheโ€™s been subjected to.

Rebecca stands tall between them, arms outstretched to shield her friend.

ยซI TOLD YOU TO GET AWAY FROM HER! DONโ€™T MAKE ME SAY IT AGAIN!ยป Rebecca shouts furiously.

Her face is twisted in anger and tears, her ragged breathing on the verge of losing herself to uncontrollable rage. Honestly, sheโ€™s overreacting. Why get so worked up over something that doesnโ€™t even concern her directly? Either way, not my problem.

ยซDonโ€™t get cocky just because you made it to the last tournament finals,ยป Luke snaps back. ยซI could easilyโ€”ยป

ยซI wonโ€™t tolerate this kind of behavior in my school,ยป I cut in. ยซCut it out now, or itโ€™ll get worse for you.ยป

Not that I really care, but as a senior itโ€™s my job to keep order when no teachers are around.

ยซJ-Jade,ยป Luke, pale, stammers. ยซY-youโ€™ve got it wrong, we were just, you know, getting to know the new girl, thatโ€™s all...ยป

ยซY-yeah, Lukeโ€™s right,ยป Eirik adds quickly. ยซW-weโ€™d never hurt anyone.ยป

ยซGet lost. Now. And count yourself lucky Iโ€™m in a good mood, or Iโ€™d report you straight to the professors,ยป I warn coldly.

They donโ€™t wait for me to repeat it. Both bolt at once.

Anastasia slowly pushes herself up, still trembling, then runs straight into me, wrapping her arms tightly around my waist. Sheโ€™s small, so her breatsโ€”unusually developed for her ageโ€”presses right against my stomach.

ยซJade Kyndrake, my hero,ยป she whispers with overwhelming gratitude. ยซThank you for saving me. Thank you so, so much!ยป

But that flood of affection doesnโ€™t sit well with Viktoria and the others.

They glare at her, especially Selene, who clears her throat loudly to remind Anastasia sheโ€™s crossing the line. Yet, as if to spite them, she clings to me even tighter. I canโ€™t deny Iโ€™m uncomfortable; after all, sheโ€™s barely more than a kid, and feeling her chest pressing into me... yeah, not good.

I grip her arms and gently ease her away, enough to calm the girlsโ€™ jealousyโ€”and to keep certain natural reactions under control.

ยซNo need to thank me,ยป I reply. ยซRebecca couldโ€™ve taken those two down by herself. I just made sure they didnโ€™t hurt themselves or get her expelled.ยป

My goal is to defeat Rebecca in the next semesterโ€™s tournament and prove once and for all that Iโ€™m the best. I canโ€™t allow rumors like, "Jade only won because Rebecca got expelled. Actually, I think he used his fatherโ€™s influence to kick her out, so he wouldnโ€™t have to face her again."

All bullshit.

Rebecca gives me a timid smile. The rage and tension seem to vanish from her face.

ยซThen Iโ€™m the one who should thank you...ยป she murmurs.

She takes a few steps toward me. She seems nervous, like sheโ€™s speaking to some important political or military figure. Sure, Iโ€™m the prince of Kristalia, but here in Astralea Iโ€™m just Jade Kyndrake, and everyoneโ€™s always treated me that way. Fights with other students, especially in the first years, and getting scolded by teachers were never rare, royal blood or not.

ยซYou know, I was thinking... since our fight, weโ€™ve never had the chance to talk about it...ยป she says, her voice barely audible and her cheeks flushed.

ยซAnd weโ€™re not going to,ยป I cut her off coldly.

My cold, blunt reply stuns her. The smile fades, leaving trembling lips and watery eyes on the verge of tears.

That girl is the reason Iโ€™ve had sleepless nights these past weeks; the last thing I want is to chat like nothing happened, like Iโ€™ve already forgotten the humiliation she put me through in front of my father.

ยซAre you mad at me?ยป she asks. She looks genuinely sorry, probably clueless about why I hate her. ยซWhatever I did, Iโ€™m really sorโ€”ยป

ยซDidnโ€™t you hear what he just said?!ยป Viktoria growls, cutting her off. ยซJade has no intention of wasting his breath on a stupid brat! Get lost!ยป

Rebeccaโ€™s eyes, which had been holding back tears, finally break like a dam bursting. Anastasia hugs her, trying to comfort her, but Viktoria keeps pressing.

ยซYouโ€™re just an overrated kid who only fought Jade by pure luck. You cast the Crystal Chant and risked your life just to humiliate him in front of everyone, didnโ€™t you? Like, โ€™Look at me, Iโ€™m a first year and I can already use it, when Jade couldnโ€™t at my ageโ€™. Want to know something? Jade could already use that spell at fourteen, but he wasnโ€™t dumb enough to do it without training his body first to endure that much magic!ยป

ยซYouโ€™re wrong, I swear. That was never my intenโ€”ยป

ยซYou think youโ€™re on our level? How pathetic!ยป Viktoria interrupts again. ยซSince the tournament ended, everyone in the kingdom just talks about you and your ridiculous strength, overshadowing Jadeโ€™s extraordinary performance. Iโ€™ll prove to himโ€”no, to all of Kristaliaโ€”that weโ€™re on a completely different level from you. Rebecca Asheart, I officially challenge you to a duel!ยป
