The 1970s: Married First, Fell in Love Later-Chapter 72 - 71: Encountering a Robbery
The car behind them also screeched to a halt.
From the driver’s seat, Li Dawei exclaimed, "Brother Lang, I think there’s someone lying on the road up ahead."
Bathed in the glow of the streetlights, He Lang could see that there was indeed a person lying on the road, their back turned to them.
"Brother Lang, what should we do? The person’s not moving, and we can’t get past. Should we get out and check?"
He Lang’s eyes narrowed. He thought for a moment. "Don’t get out yet. We don’t know the situation. Let’s just wait in the car for a bit."
A thought seemed to strike Li Dawei as well, and his nerves instantly tensed. He grabbed the iron pipe they kept in the car.
They waited for a long while, but the person on the ground didn’t move.
The surroundings were quiet.
"Brother Lang, how about I get out and take a look? It’s been a while, and we don’t want to get held up." Li Dawei felt a sense of relief seeing the person on the ground remain motionless.
He Lang said to Li Dawei, "I’ll go check. You stay in the car and keep the engine running. If I think something’s wrong, I’ll shout, and you floor it and drive right through."
Li Dawei said anxiously, "What could be wrong? Why don’t I go instead?"
He Lang patted his shoulder, then got out of the car with the iron pipe.
After getting out, He Lang first scanned his surroundings. It was pitch-black, and he couldn’t see clearly.
He didn’t go straight over. Instead, he gestured to the car behind them and saw the two men inside nod.
Only then did He Lang slowly walk toward the person lying on the road.
He Lang got closer and saw it was a man with his eyes closed.
He Lang reached out a hand to touch the person on the ground. In an instant, there was a flash of cold steel, and a sharp pain shot through his arm.
A flicker of pain crossed He Lang’s eyes as he jerked back a step.
The person on the ground opened their eyes, instantly flipped over and sprang up, lunging at He Lang with a knife.
He Lang swung the iron pipe to meet the attack.
Li Dawei saw everything clearly from the car. He was frantic and wanted to get out to help, but he remembered He Lang’s instructions and could only watch.
Just then, five or six men suddenly rushed out from the darkness, all of them holding knives.
Seeing this, He Lang’s pupils contracted. He yelled at Li Dawei in the car, "Go!"
Li Dawei snapped to his senses and slammed on the gas. The car shot forward with a WHOOSH, charging at the men in front.
Seeing the car coming, the men who had rushed out quickly dodged to the side.
Li Dawei drove right through them, and the car behind him followed close.
By the time the men saw the cars speeding away, they realized the man who had gotten out was also gone.
The men searched the area but couldn’t find him.
"Goddammit..." They never imagined their meticulous plan would fail.
They stood there cursing for a long time before finally leaving after another wait.
Li Dawei’s heart pounded the entire way. He drove for a full kilometer without stopping before finally slamming on the brakes and pulling over.
"We’re screwed. Brother Lang is still back there."
Liu Yuan from the back car got out and climbed into Li Dawei’s.
"What happened? Your car was blocking the view, so we couldn’t see. Did we get ambushed?"
Li Dawei rested his forehead in one hand.
"Yeah. There was a guy lying in the middle of the road. Brother Lang got out to check, and then five or six guys with knives jumped out. Brother Lang told me that if he gave the signal, I should just drive through."
Liu Yuan frowned. "Then what about He Lang?"
Li Dawei wiped his face. "How should I know?"
Li Dawei was tormented. He’d just abandoned He Lang, leaving him to face a large group of men armed with knives.
"No, I have to go back. We can’t just leave like this. It’s not right," Li Dawei said.
Liu Yuan thought for a moment, then nodded. "Turn around. We can’t leave He Lang behind by himself."
Meanwhile, He Lang was walking alone on the road. There was no one in front of him or behind him.
One of He Lang’s arms hung limp at his side, blood dripping from his hand. DRIP. DRIP. A fine sheen of sweat had broken out on his forehead.
After he had walked some distance, a pair of powerful headlights shone on him. He Lang raised a hand to block the blinding light.
Then he heard the SLAM of a car door.
"Brother Lang."
"He Lang."
He Lang stood up straight and saw Li Dawei and Liu Yuan running toward him.
As the two got closer, they saw that He Lang’s white shirt was stained with a lot of blood.
"Brother Lang, where are you hurt? I saw they had knives," Li Dawei said, looking He Lang up and down.
He Lang let out a soft laugh. "I got cut on the arm. It’s nothing serious. Why did you two come back?"
Liu Yuan looked at He Lang’s injured arm and said, "We came together. There was no way we were leaving you behind alone."
The corner of He Lang’s mouth lifted. "Their target was our cargo. Once you left, they weren’t going to stick around hassling me."
Li Dawei supported He Lang. "Don’t talk. Let’s get you in the car. We have a first-aid kit; I’ll patch you up."
Xue Yue didn’t sleep well all night. She was plagued by chaotic dreams and woke up at five in the morning.
The sky was just beginning to lighten. She lay in bed, not getting up, staring blankly at the slivers of light filtering through the gap in the curtains.
’I wonder how far He Lang and the others have gotten?’
’Is the journey going smoothly?’
Xue Yue’s mind was racing until a flutter in her belly made her eyes widen, her expression instantly shifting to one of joy.
She lowered her gaze and placed a hand on her stomach. It moved again.
It was the first time Xue Yue had felt the miracle of life. Her heart was instantly filled with bliss, and a gentle warmth spread through her.
In that moment, Xue Yue missed He Lang more than ever. She wanted to share this joy with him.
Because today was Xue Xingzhou’s first day of work, Xue Yue got up early to make him breakfast.
After Xue Xingzhou left, Xue Yue went back to bed to get some more sleep.
On his first day of work, Xue Xingzhou caused quite a sensation at the police station.
A crowd gathered around him, buzzing with discussion.
"I heard you took on three guys at once in yesterday’s assessment and won easily."
"For real? Him?"
"Of course it’s real! I was there. It was incredible."
"I heard you didn’t just top the physical assessment, but also the written exam this morning. Did you get the answers ahead of time or something?"
"A promising kid like you should come work with me." 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦
"In your dreams. The Captain was there yesterday, and he claimed this one on the spot."
"Didn’t the Captain say he wasn’t taking on any more rookies?"
"Who said I’m not taking on rookies?" A man in his fifties, dressed in a worn-out police uniform and holding a large tea mug, walked in slowly from the doorway.
He walked in and looked at Xue Xingzhou with a pleased expression. "Xiao Xue, you’ll be with me from now on. I can’t believe I found a successor before I retire."
"Captain, you’re being too overbearing. Why does Xiao Xue have to go with you? I want to mentor a rookie too," Liu Chunming said indignantly.
Zhang Hongjie glanced at the person beside him and said, "Isn’t there another one? You can take him."
They had hired two people yesterday. Besides Xue Xingzhou, there was another young man named Li Xiufeng, who had a more delicate appearance.
Liu Chunming took a look at Li Xiufeng. ’He looks so effeminate,’ he thought.
"I just want Xiao Xue."
Zhang Hongjie glared at him. "You really are dreaming. You dare try to steal someone from me? How about I let you have my position for a while?"
Liu Chunming quickly waved his hands, grinning. "Captain, I wouldn’t dare."
Zhang Hongjie snorted. "Get lost, all of you. Don’t you have work to do?"
The crowd dejectedly dispersed.
When Zhang Hongjie turned back to Xue Xingzhou, his expression changed completely.
"Xiao Xue, from now on you’ll be with me. You can call me Master or Captain Zhang."
Xue Xingzhou said, "Master."
Zhang Hongjie nodded in satisfaction.
Then his gaze fell on the person standing next to Xue Xingzhou, and he frowned.
