The Alpha King's Nemesis-Chapter 186: No Ordinary Woman ()
Elder Jared sat at his desk, watching his daughter out of the corner of his eyes in a manner he hoped was subtle enough not to aggravate her.
Vivienne scanned through the shelves of books in his office, her expression difficult to decipher.
She had been at it for about twenty minutes already and Elder Jared had to wonder what exactly it was that she searched for so intently.
Elder Jared would not usually be so interested in his daughter’s activities and was more than willing to let her do as she pleased, but things were much different now... Vivienne was much different.
The young Vivienne had been a free spirit and a fierce warrior, the Vivienne now was still just as fierce of a warrior but Elder Jared could not tell much more than that.
There were many things about Vivienne that had changed, Elder Jared did not need a sooth sayer to be able to tell that his innocent and bubbly daughter was now far more matured and knowledgeable of the world.
She now hid her thoughts and intentions perfectly well and no longer wore her heart on her sleeve like she used to, laughing and crying without reservations.
This change was expected and Elder Jared even blamed himself, he had been the one to constantly remind Vivienne that as her mate was Alpha, she would have to be more matured in her thoughts, actions and countenance in order to fit the status of the Luna.
He had been the one to convince his daughter to change her true nature in favor of her short tempered and egotistical mate.
After years with a disloyal mate and suffering through the pain of a rejection, Elder Jared could not dare expect that Vivienne would still be as he used to know her.
She had known pain and betrayal, she had learnt the hard way that the world was not as colourful and beautiful as it was back home with a father that doted on her, respected amongst her peers and cherished by the then Prince Royal.
And this was why Elder Jared watched her so closely, in recent days, Vivienne hardly spoke and she would not share her thoughts with her father as she did when she was younger.
The only thing Elder Jared knew for sure was the fact that Vivienne’s mood had become even more ugly since news spread that King Askel’s mate, the Crimson Alpha had regained consciousness.
Elder Jared knew Queen Sancia had already gone behind his back to whisper words of ambition to Vivienne and Elder Jared had allowed it then, when the fate of the Crimson Alpha seemed bleak but now, that had changed.
Elder Jared was a man who knew when to take a step back and when to give up, and Elder Jared had known that was the only path when King Askel raged at the meeting hall and made it clear he would never consider another mate.
However, Elder Jared was not so certain his daughter shared these traits of his... he was not so certain she knew when to take a step back.
The answer to his question became apparent when Vivienne arrived at the shelf where he stored the council reports of the Royal Lycan council.
As one of the primary elders of the Ethereal domain, there were hundreds of confidential files entrusted to him that were meant for his eyes only and not to be shared with anyone, not even family.
But those were precisely the reports Vivienne reached for.
"Vivienne, do not touch that. Those are confidential files." Elder Jared reprimanded.
Vivienne glanced over her shoulder at her father, a bored look on her face.
"You never minded me reading through your council reports when I was younger." Vivienne pointed out.
"That is different Vivienne. Recently, there have been strange sightings of dead rogues lining our boundaries and it is a cause for concern. It is also an extremely fragile topic that has the Alpha King deeply concerned,"
"The council members have submitted their thoughts on it and they are yet to be presented to the Alpha King, I do not believe it is a matter you should get involved in." Elder Jared warned in a more serious tone.
"I am an enforcer wolf, father. I will return to my duties soon and so I believe there is no harm if I familiarise myself with the state of things in Royal Lycan territory...a glimpse will not harm me." Vivienne replied with a casual shrug.
"Vivienne, you have only just returned for a short time. Most of your peers still do not know of your return. It is too early to consider taking up pack duties." Elder Jared reasoned.
"I have to do something or I might lose my mind, father. I cannot spend the rest of my days sulking over a broken bond... I intend to discuss returning to my duties with Aunt Sancia." Vivienne relayed.
"Pack duties are assigned by Dechlan. It is not within Queen Sancia’s authority to restore you to your place if Dechlan does not deem you fit to serve. Don’t you think you should go to him first?" Elder Jared suggested.
"Dechlan is third in command and Aunt Sancia is still the only Queen of the Ethereal Domain and Askel’s mother. If Aunt Sancia wants it, Dechlan cannot oppose." Vivienne replied in an unbothered tone.
"In the meantime, where are the council reports about the Crimson wolves since their arrival? I should also familiarize myself with our...guests." Vivienne added.
"Vivienne...if you are planning to stir trouble with the Crimson Alpha, I would advice against it. You must remember that not even Queen Sancia can afford to offend her... she is not just any ordinary woman." Elder Jared warned.
"Neither am I." Vivienne replied with a quiet chuckle.
Ignoring her father’s warning, she sorted through the reports intently.
Elder Jared opened his mouth to protest but he decided against it, shaking his head slightly, he returned his attention to the files on his desk.
