Chapter 199: The Result of a Set Up (Ch.199)

"Rogues!" A Royal Lycan guard snarled in annoyance as he jogged over to Caedmon and Zariah.

The Royal Lycan guards had arrived at the scene just a moment later, led by a pack enforcer Zariah recognised as one of Dechlan’s close subordinates.

"Zariah was attacked! They came out of nowhere. Four are at large." Caedmon related to the pack enforcer.

"My men are on their trail already, they will not escape." The pack enforcer assured.

"Crimson Alpha...how severely injured?" The pack enforcer enquired, crouching down by Zariah’s side.

"Badly, I must get her to a healer." Caedmon said in a pained tone.

"We sensed the rogues approach too close to the human settlement and have been tracking them since, we lost their trail just a short time ago, if I had known they were plotting something like this...we have failed to arrive in time..." The royal Lycan guard trailed off, his tone apologetic and concerned.

"We should take the Crimson Alpha to the Ethereal Palace at once. The Oracle will see to her wounds, he is the best we have." The pack enforcer suggested.

Zariah clutched Caedmon’s robes, and Caedmon’s gaze moved to her, brows furrowed in concern.

"Take me back to the inn, and have someone fetch Nile... he knows my condition best, he is the only one that can heal me." Zariah said with difficulty.

"If that is your will, I will send for Nile at once and have him meet you." The pack enforcer promised and dashed off.

Caedmon lifted Zariah up into his arms and dashed for the inn, running at full speed.

Despite her condition, Zariah found it amusing, that Caedmon was making such an effort to save her when he was the one who had arranged for the attack in the first place.

’There is not a single honest bone in his body, to actually worry for one you set up.’ Zariah thought to herself.

It did not come as a surprise to her, she already knew this much about Caedmon, it was even the least of his shortcomings.

"Help! Darren! Eloneth!" Caedmon called as he burst into the inn.

Zariah was still conscious as Caedmon’s panicked cries for help echoed across the inn.

Zariah was grateful Darren had thought to rent the entire inn out of Zariah’s comfort, it would truly have been a concern had there been other humans present at this moment.

Even the innkeeper would be far out in the back at this time.

"Oh my!" Eloneth’s horrified exclamation sounded from the top floor.

She hurried down to meet Caedmon, eyes wide with panic.

"How...? What...?" Eloneth began to ask but thinking better of it, she brushed away her questions.

"Her room is right this way, quickly!" Eloneth guided Caedmon up to Zariah’s room in the inn.

She pushed open the door and pulled back the covers, letting Caedmon gently lay Zariah down on her sides so the wounds were not touched.

"How did this happen?! She was out with you, was she not?!" Eloneth demanded crossly when Caedmon had placed Zariah down.

"Ren will freak out..." Eloneth went right ahead to continue in her panic.

It was not even a moment after she had said those words that the doors burst open and Darren, Nile and Kristen rushed into the room.

"Zari!" Darren exclaimed in horror at the first sight of Zariah.

Nile wasted no time, placing his medicine box down, he beckoned on Eloneth.

"Quick, help me get her robes off." Nile instructed.

Meanwhile, Darren’s panic had converted into fury, aimed at Caedmon.

"You had one job, one job Alpha Caedmon! Zariah was not to get hurt! She was not to exert herself! She is in her most vulnerable state! You were supposed to protect her at any cost!" Darren roared.

Caedmon’s gaze was guilty and he could not meet Darren’s furious eyes.

"I... I only left for a moment, if I had known there were rogues, I would never have left her side." Caedmon explained in a low tone

"You should leave now, Alpha Caedmon. Leave or so help me, I will take your head!" Darren roared.

"Hush Ren, that is enough... I can’t focus!" Nile snarled without glancing over at Darren.

Darren sucked in a sharp breath, fixing Caedmon with a cold glare.

"Why are you still here?" Darren hissed, though he kept his tone low.

"Zariah is my mate, I cannot leave before I make certain that she is okay." Caedmon insisted.

Zariah grew weary of the exchange, she was already struggling to stay conscious and she did not need the added dramatics.

"Caedmon, I am in good hands...they will send word to you when I am in a better state." Zariah interrupted the exchange, her tone shaky.

Caedmon seemed about to protest but Darren’s dark glare prevented him.

"Zari, I will return tomorrow..." Caedmon tried but was cut off by Nile this time.

"As Alpha said, we will send you word. You are not to return before then." Nile made clear.

Zariah did not feel any type of way by the cold manner with which the Crimson wolves regarded Caedmon which was worlds apart from how they regarded Askel.

Zariah had learnt the hard way that often times, the instincts and discernment of her subordinates were more accurate than hers.

They had been much the same, unwelcoming and cold to Caedmon in the past lifetime, and then, it had only made Zariah even more protective of him.

But this time was different.

"Caedmon, I will be fine. It will not be long before I have word sent to you, the month is not up yet." Zariah said in a much calmer tone, easing the tension in the room.

Caedmon sighed quietly and nodded in understanding.

"I am sorry Zariah, for being so incapable. It will never happen again, and I will find all those rogues and kill them, I swear it." Caedmon vowed and then he took his leave.

With Caedmon gone, Zariah was more at ease and she slowly drifted off to unconsciousness.
