The Beast Tamer's Awakening: Amaya and the White Tiger King-Chapter 16: THE KING’S PATH
The forest was silent after the explosion.
Leaves drifted slowly back to the ground, settling over the twisted roots and scorched earth where the Alpha Shade had been moments before. The only sound was Leo’s breathing uneven, and far too fast for a warrior of his rank.
He held Amaya tightly in his arms, refusing to loosen his grip even as the moonlight filtered weakly through the canopy above.
Her power had erupted again.
Strong enough to obliterate an Alpha Shade.
Strong enough to shake the leyline beneath them.
Strong enough to terrify even him.
Leo’s heart hammered painfully against his chest as he lowered his gaze to her face. Amaya’s eyes were half-open, unfocused. Her breathing shallow. Her hands trembling.
"Amaya," he whispered, brushing her cheek with the back of his fingers. "Look at me."
She blinked slowly, her lashes fluttering as she returned to consciousness.
"...Leo...?"
His throat tightened.
Relief hit him so hard his knees nearly buckled.
"I’m here," he murmured. "You’re safe."
She tried to sit up, but Leo pressed a gentle hand to her back and held her still.
"No," he said firmly. "Don’t move yet. Your mana is unstable."
She swallowed. "D-Did I... did I hurt you?"
He froze.
And then he laughed softly—a stunned, breathless sound—before pulling her against his chest again.
"No," he whispered into her hair. "You protected me."
Her fingers curled weakly into his shirt. "I didn’t mean to—"
"Amaya," he interrupted softly, "I know. But listen to me."
He leaned his forehead against hers, their breaths mixing.
"I’m proud of you."
Her eyes widened. "Proud?"
"You faced an Alpha Shade," he said. "And lived."
He brushed his thumb over her cheek.
"You didn’t freeze. You didn’t break. You fought."
Amaya shook her head. "I didn’t know what I was doing—"
"And yet you still saved us both."
Her lips parted.
Leo’s voice dropped, soft but fierce.
"Never apologize for surviving."
A tear slid down her cheek.
Leo caught it gently with his thumb.
She leaned into his touch—and he let his hand linger longer than a king should. The warmth between them pulled tight, soft, and dangerous.
But before either of them could speak—
The fox-eared boy groaned from where Leo had left him under the tree.
Leo stiffened instantly.
His protective instincts flared and he pushed Amaya lightly behind him.
The boy blinked awake weakly.
"...Your Majesty... did you... win?"
Leo snorted softly. "It’s dead."
The boy exhaled in relief before wincing in pain. "I can walk—barely... but I can guide you. The northern ridge... the barriers are compromised."
Leo’s jaw tensed. "Then we must reach the mountain gate before the corruption spreads."
Amaya stood shakily, and Leo’s hand shot out, steadying her by the waist.
She froze at the contact.
He froze too.
For a moment, neither moved.
He slowly loosened his hold...
...but didn’t remove it entirely.
"Are you steady?" he asked quietly.
"Yes," she whispered.
He didn’t let go.
Not even after she spoke.
Only after a long second did he release her—but his tail remained curled around her leg, subconsciously anchoring her to him.
She pretended not to notice.
He absolutely noticed.
He did not move it.

The Path of the King
The trio began moving through the forest again, this time slower, with the fox boy limping slightly beside them. Leo kept one hand on Amaya’s back, guiding her firmly forward.
Every few steps, he glanced at her—checking her stance, her breathing, her color.
She finally sighed. "Leo."
"Yes?"
"You’re staring."
He didn’t even look embarrassed.
"You nearly fainted. I will stare as much as I want."
"...That makes me sound fragile."
"You are fragile," he said without hesitation. "But stubborn enough to pretend you’re not."
Her mouth dropped open.
The fox boy coughed to hide a laugh.
Leo glared at him.
The boy looked away immediately.
But Amaya smiled—and Leo’s chest tightened at the sight.
He had nearly lost that smile.
He would never allow that again.

The Forest Shifts
The deeper they walked, the darker the forest became.
Black veins spread along the tree trunks like infected wounds.
Pools of corruption bubbled beneath the roots.
The fox boy flinched. "This corruption... it wasn’t this bad earlier. It’s spreading too quickly."
Leo’s expression hardened.
"It’s reacting to Amaya."
She stopped mid-stride. "To me?"
"Yes." Leo turned to her, his gaze softening. "Your awakening radiates lunar energy. The Priestess’s corruption reacts to it—hunts it."
"So it’s following us."
He nodded.
Her heartbeat stuttered.
Leo immediately reached for her hand.
She hesitated.
He didn’t.
He took it gently, his thumb brushing over her knuckles.
"I won’t let anything reach you," he said quietly.
And for a moment...
she believed him completely.

Shadows in the Trees
They were halfway across a fallen log bridge when Leo suddenly froze.
"Stop."
Amaya’s breath caught. "What is it?"
His ears turned sharply.
His voice dropped to a low growl.
"...We’re being followed."
The fox boy drew a dagger.
Amaya stepped closer to Leo instinctively.
He slipped an arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his side.
Then—
The forest erupted.
Dozens of shadow beasts burst from the treetops, leaping toward them from every direction.
Amaya gasped. "Leo!"
"Stay behind me," he snapped.
The fox boy threw a dagger. A beast dissolved.
Leo unleashed his aura.
Silver fire rippled across his skin, transforming his stance, sharpening his stripes.
He placed Amaya back against the fallen log and stepped forward—eyes burning gold.
The beasts screeched.
And Leo moved.
He didn’t just fight—
He annihilated.
Claws flashed.
Light cracked the air.
Every swipe of his hand tore shadows apart.
Every roar sent beasts flying.
But more came.
More than before.
More than the Alpha Shade had brought.
The leyline was crying, Amaya realized.
The corruption was no longer spreading—it was converging.
Toward her.
Her hands shook.
Her chest tightened painfully.
I’m putting everyone in danger...
Leo turned sharply, sensing her thoughts.
He growled.
"Don’t think I’m fighting because of trouble you caused."
Amaya’s eyes widened.
Leo slashed two beasts in half and continued without missing a beat.
"I’m fighting because you’re mine to protect."
Her heart stumbled violently.
"Leo—"
A beast lunged at her.
Before she could scream—
Silver chains burst from the ground, wrapping around the creature and dragging it into the earth.
Amaya gasped.
"What—what was that?!"
Leo paused.
Stunned.
And for the first time since the fight began...
He smiled.
"That," he said, "is your instinct."
"My... what?"
"Your power reacts to emotion," he said, stepping in front of her again. "When you fear losing someone... it protects."
"But I didn’t cast anything—"
"You didn’t need to."
More beasts surrounded them.
Leo’s stripes flared brighter.
He grabbed Amaya’s waist and lifted her easily, setting her behind him again.
"Stay with me," he commanded.
"I’m not going anywhere," she whispered.
His eyes flicked back to hers.
Something raw flickered there.
Then he turned back to the fight.
---
Breaking Point
The corruption thickened until the air tasted metallic.
Beasts with elongated limbs and crooked jaws crawled from the darkness.
The fox boy fought bravely.
Leo fought like a king.
But Amaya could feel it—
The forest was bending toward her.
Calling to her.
Pulling at her awakening like invisible hands.
Her head throbbed.
Her heart pounded.
Her vision blurred.
Energy surged beneath her skin, wild and unrestrained.
Leo’s head snapped toward her, eyes widening.
"Amaya—NO!"
But it was too late.
Her knees buckled.
The ground trembled.
And moonlight erupted from her body, spiraling upward like a blinding pillar.
Leo dove toward her.
But the shockwave hit first.
The fox boy was thrown into a tree.
Leo slammed into the earth, claws digging into the soil to anchor himself.
"AMAYA!"
Her scream echoed through the entire forest.
The moon flared above them.
Every corrupted tree crackled and exploded outward.
Beasts dissolved instantly.
The ground split under her feet.
Leo crawled forward through the shockwave, fighting the gale of silver magic.
"Amaya! Look at me! Look at me!"
She couldn’t hear him.
Her eyes glowed pure silver.
Her hair lifted in a halo of light.
And something inside her—something ancient—whispered.
Break the seal.
Break it.
Break it now.
"No!" Amaya gasped, clawing at her chest. "Stop—!"
Leo finally reached her.
He grabbed her shoulders—
And yanked her into his arms.
The shockwave collapsed instantly.
The world flickered.
And Amaya fell forward—
Straight into Leo’s chest, sobbing, trembling violently.
He wrapped both arms around her, holding her so tightly she could barely breathe.
"Breathe," he whispered urgently. "I’ve got you. Look at me. Look at me."
Her vision blurred.
Di storted.
Leo’s warmth was the only thing grounding her.
"Leo... I can’t control it," she choked out. "It’s too strong. It wants to break free—"
"I won’t let it."
His voice was fierce and gentle all at once.
He cupped her head against his shoulder.
"You hear me? I won’t let it."
Her fingers twisted desperately into his clothes.
"Please don’t let me become a monster..."
Leo held her tighter than ever.
"You won’t."
"But the Priestess—"
"I don’t care."
He tilted her face up.
And his voice cracked.
"You’re not becoming a monster. You’re becoming powerful."
She shook her head, tears spilling.
"Leo—"
He brushed them away with both hands.
"You are Amaya," he whispered fiercely. "Not a seal. Not a weapon. Not a key."
His forehead met hers.
"You are mine."
She gasped.
"And I’m yours," he breathed. "So let me share the burden."
Her heart stumbled violently.
"Leo..."
He pulled her fully into his arms and held her for a long, trembling moment.
Until the moonlight faded.
Until her breathing steadied.
Until the corruption around them shrank away.
Only then did he speak again.
"We need to reach the mountain gate," he murmured. "Your awakening is accelerating too fast. Only the White Tiger Kingdom can stabilize you now."
She nodded weakly.
And when Leo lifted her in his arms again—
She didn’t protest.
Her head rested against his chest.
His tail wrapped around her waist.
And as he carried her deeper into the forest, his voice rumbled softly above her.
"I swear," he whispered into her hair, "even if your power grows beyond gods... I’ll be right here."
Her eyes fluttered closed.
And for the first time since her awakening began—
She let herself trust him completely.
