The Betrayed Heiress's Second Comeback-Chapter 34: Ch : The Attack on the Car
If looks could kill, then I would already be five feet under by now. Miss Anabella’s eyes told me that she wanted to shred me alive and then pluck my insides out all the while watching without blinking.
The hatred in her stare was so sharp that it felt like claws dragging across my skin, as if she was already imagining how I would scream.
But as I had noticed before, she was a good actress and knew how to control the situation. She suppressed her desires as she took a step backward and gave us a small bow.
Since she was not replying to my words, I decided to try and provoke her.
"Were you and the director... close? Or perhaps, you both shared the same hobbies."
I asked, causing Miss Anabella’s eyes to become even colder. She definitely knew that I knew her secret. Her eyes looked at Damian and then turned back toward me.
They lingered where we were touching for a few seconds longer than necessary before she turned to look at me once more.
"Miss, I would be careful with the enemies I make here. Tragedy has a way to sneak itself into any place it can."
It was clearly a warning to stay in my lane and not try anything funny. I only smiled on the outside, showing everyone how unbothered I felt by all this. Inside, I could practically feel her mentally stabbing me over and over, furious that her threat didn’t make me tremble.
Miss Anabella did not stay around for long after that. She said something about feeling sick and returned home.
"Darling, should we approach the dead and give our blessings as well?"
I asked, and Damian nodded before he escorted me to the coffin. We placed the flowers and decided to head back before the reporters could start making stuff up.
"Rose Harvour and Karl Hanson were not present. Do you think something happened...?"
Damian’s fingers knocked at the wheel at my question. But he did not think long before he gave me an answer.
"It is likely that they decided not to come and break ties with the director. There is no direct proof that they were connected beyond Miss Anabella’s parties."
So, that meant that Rose and Karl (along with others) had started to cut ties with the problematic part of their group.
’Tsk, what a headache this is turning out to be. What should we do now? What if everyone catches on to the fact that we are after them and decide to bury the evidence of their crimes.’
Just thinking about it made me feel annoyed. I did not want to work extra in order to get a reward.
"Don’t worry. Everything will be just fine. Even if these people try to hide things now, it is too late. Their crimes have already left their mark..."
"Watch out—" 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖
Both Damian and I had been paying attention to the road as we talked. So there was no way we would have missed the speeding truck heading our way. We managed to dodge that encounter, but it caused the car to hit a tree.
The airbag saved our lives, but it also made it difficult for me to breathe properly. I pushed it back and looked at my side, only to see Damian bleeding out of his temple.
My heart dropped. For a second, the world froze and focused on him and our situation.
The car had hit his side on the tree much harder, and shards of glass were embedded in his arm. Just moving him looked painful... and yet, I knew that I could not allow us to remain in the car for much longer.
"My phone... where is my phone..."
I could hardly move due to the pressure of the seatbag, but I still found my phone and called the emergency number. Instead of the police, my phone had the emergency contact Damian had given me.
Ring ring
The phone rang only twice before someone on the other side picked it up. I could hear the sound of gunfire coming from behind, but my hazy brain made it difficult to be able to distinguish between the noises.
"Hey miss, what can I help you with?"
The person on the other side asked in a cheerful voice. The voice sounded young but had just a hint of steel in it that warned me not to waste his time.
"H-Help us..."
I whispered before the other side went quiet. I waited a few seconds, wondering whether I should speak once more or not.
Before I decided anything, the person on the other side spoke up to give me instructions.
"Miss, I cannot tell what the situation is from your voice, but if you are in a dangerous place, then get to safety somehow. I will start tracking this phone down as soon as I can. Just... keep our master safe."
The man on the other side of the phone told me, and I tried to let out a sound but was unable to. The phone stopped ringing, and my brain kicked into motion.
I needed to drag myself and Damian out of this dangerous situation. Otherwise, we would both be in danger.
It was tough to be able to get his seat belt off, but I somehow managed and then dragged him toward my side as I opened the door.
My muscles screamed as I pulled him. Even the sparks and my fast-beating heart could not make me feel better. But I somehow managed to drag him all the way behind a tree not too far away.
As soon as I put him down, my body sagged against the tree as well, and I closed my eyes to rest for a while when I heard the sound of someone walking around. I peeked out from behind the tree to see Miss Anabella and a person dressed in black.
Alarm bells immediately began to ring in my head, and I started to look for my phone to capture what was happening. But unfortunately, I had lost my phone in the car.
Luckily, Damian had his phone (somehow still intact), and I decided to snap some photos of what was happening. I did not have to unlock his phone to open the camera, which allowed me to snap as I wanted.
I watched as Miss Anabella took something out of her pocket before she threw it toward the car... and then, the car caught fire and started to burn hard.
We had been minutes away from a certain death.
