The Betrayed Heiress's Second Comeback-Chapter 42: Ch : The Confession- Part 1
A tired face looked back at me from the mirror as I stared at it. My black dress made my pale face look almost sickly, and the yellow-based foundation I had applied on my skin did not help my case.
I finished my look by highlighting barely-there dark circles for a more...dramatic effect and I was done.
’I truly do look sick and tired. I am sure I will be able to invoke people’s sympathy with this look.’
Today was the court date, and also time for Miss Anabella to be tried in front of the jury. She would surely be in a state which would invoke people’s pity for her.
Not only that, but there were more than enough defenders for her online, spreading word of how Miss Anabella was a noble person and not in the wrong for what happened. The vocal majority was a minor problem for now.
"Jenna, are you ready to head out?"
Damian knocked on the door of my room to let me know it was time for us to leave. I put my makeup brush down and stood up. It was time for us to leave now.
A concerned look filled Damian’s face as soon as he looked at my face.
"You...are you alright? You look a little sick..."
Damian’s voice trailed off and his worry sounded genuine. That was how I knew that my makeup had worked.
If I could fool someone like Damian, then others would be a piece of cake for me.
"It is fine. I am not sick. But this is an effect I was going for. Let’s head out now. There are...people we need to see."
I told Damian as we left our house. The driver outside was waiting for us to come so that he could take us to the courtroom. As soon as I got into the car, it was time for us to take off toward the courtroom.
People welcomed us with flashes of camera as soon as we appeared in front of them. Their attention was flattering but ultimately unnecessary toward my plan.
"Make way. Please get out of the way or you will get sued."
The bodyguards pushed the people away from us as we kept walking toward the entrance of the courtroom. I gave the reporters one last look before I entered the courtroom and took my seat.
I took a quick look around to see who had come to attend this case. But apart from some typical faces, I did not see anyone of importance.
"It seems that most people have decided to wash their hands off this case. That makes things easier for us."
Damian whispered to me as he led me to the stand.
The judge was already here but Anabella was not. Rose and Karl had also not shown up to show their support.
The whispering silence was broken by a loud gasp, and everyone turned to look at the door as Miss Anabella entered the courtroom. Her eyes were red from crying and her body seemed incapable of taking her weight.
She was being supported by a guard who was tugging her toward the witness stand.
"Oh my—! It seems she’s sick."
"I know she has been accused, but isn’t this too much? This is almost inhuman."
The reporters whispered as they jotted down notes on their notepads. This had made the situation a little more difficult to control now.
Sympathy was a huge tool that I had wished to sway in my favor. But it seemed that I had been outclassed without even meaning to by Anabella.
She kept walking and was made to take her stall. Her unsteady feet made her almost collapse, but she caught herself at the last second.
Hollow eyes looked around in hope, but whatever she was looking for, she did not find, and a startled sound of half-sob, half-laugh escaped Miss Anabella’s mouth as she tried to calm down.
"Of course—! I knew I would be abandoned... but isn’t this too much?"
She muttered under her breath as she looked around. I wanted to ask her what she was looking for, but this was court and I needed to follow the rules.
Miss Anabella’s lawyer looked concerned about her and decided to call for the session to start as soon as possible. The judge also got the hint and called the court session in order.
"Miss Anabella, you have been accused of trying to kill Damian Black as well as his partner, Jenna Lorance. How do you plead?"
The judge asked, and Miss Anabella’s lawyer immediately interjected.
"Your honor, my client is not—"
"I plead guilty. I was the one who tried to kill them. But so what? Is there anything else you want to ask me?"
The female asked as she stood tall.
Gasps filled the room at her easy confession. But none were as eye-catching as her own lawyer.
Her lawyer caught himself and turned toward the judge immediately.
"Your honor, my client is not in the right state of mind at the moment and is saying things she does not mean to say. Please consider her mental state when you evaluate her and grant her pardon for now."
The lawyer was good at his work. Unfortunately, his client was not willing to cooperate.
"It’s alright. There is no saving me from this mess. I have already made my mistakes and I cannot take them back. I am also done hiding my true self. Judge, can you give me a swift end? I no longer want to live."
Miss Anabella’s confession left us all hanging. Her willingness to die was also not something we had expected out of her.
The evidence of her other crimes was left in my hand, and I wanted to accuse her immediately before the judge decided to hand her the punishment and end this case.
I gestured toward our lawyer to get involved, and he immediately took a step forward.
"Your honor, there is some more... evidence for this case that we would like to submit."
