The Billionaire Twins Need A New Mommy!-Chapter 739: Allen’s Story
Lola paced back and forth, biting her thumbnail as her mind raced.
"Madam," Allen called, stopping by the door with a bottle of water. He let out a shallow breath as he extended it toward her.
Lola glanced at the bottle and took it. "Thanks."
"Sir Charles will be fine," Allen said, though even he wasn’t completely sure. "Miss Penny and Sir Zoren are there."
"Sure," Lola rocked her head slightly and set the bottle down on the table. She rested one hand against it and exhaled heavily. "Sure."
Earlier that day, Atlas had received a call from Anteca informing him that Charles had been in an accident. Without hesitation, Atlas left with his brothers. Lola stayed behind—someone had to—and Allen couldn’t oversee everything alone.
Even with Sybil’s help, someone still needed to remain.
That had been an hour ago.
Allen pressed his lips into a thin line and walked over, leaning his back against the table. He opened his mouth, but all he managed at first was a deep exhale.
"You don’t have to comfort me, Allen," Lola said, her eyes scanning the files spread across the table. "I’m fine... sort of. Just worried. Izu is already forming a team, and Florida is helping him. They’ll need to set out this evening and hope those three hold on until backup arrives."
"And hopefully, we’ll have something useful by tomorrow morning," she added, listing their priorities. "That... we need to succeed."
Once they had Vito, they could only hope he’d lead them to Yuri. Or better yet, that Pika and Tyga would uncover something in the recordings and provide new leads.
After that, they could plan how to deal with the church.
It was a complicated situation.
Allen stayed quiet, listening as Lola went over the priorities they had already established before the emergency call. She wasn’t circling the issue to find answers; she was repeating them because she needed to.
It was understandable.
The injured man was Charles, and no one knew the full extent of Atlas’s father’s condition. All they knew was that he’d been in an accident while on his way to pick up his sons-in-law.
Allen looked away, his gaze lowering.
"When..." he began, hesitating before continuing. "When I decided to follow Sir Atlas, I thought I understood what this work would be like. Looking back, I underestimated its complexity."
Lola’s brows twitched as she slowly turned toward him.
"From the outside, it looks like Sir Atlas is just running another company. Just a bigger one," Allen continued. "But it’s nothing like that. There are nations and governments we constantly have to monitor. We need to understand not only their politics, but their cultures—everything about them."
"It’s not a thousand employees," he went on. "It’s millions of people who don’t even know that behind their governments is a family capable of bringing everything down... or making it prosper."
Of course, neither Atlas nor the Zorken Family—nor the Order—ever dictated how nations were run or who held power.
"At one point, I asked myself what the purpose of the Zorken Family even was," Allen said thoughtfully. "We don’t govern. We don’t write laws. It just felt like more weight on Sir Atlas’s shoulders. And then there was the Council... and the other founding families."
He let out a quiet, bitter laugh. "I’d be lying if I said I was never exhausted. There was a time I thought about leaving the Order and working elsewhere, doing what I was good at. Sir Atlas already had everything he needed. Anyone could replace me."
He glanced at Lola and smiled faintly. "I don’t even know why I’m telling you this. But I did resign once. He protected me and allowed me to return. I was engaged when I first followed him. One year later, I was ready to give up."
Lola pushed herself off and leaned beside him against the table. "Is that why she broke off the engagement?" she asked gently. "Because you were away?"
"She was a wonderful woman, Madam," Allen replied. "Smart, understanding... and very normal." His smile wavered. "I thought I was normal too. But after a year in this environment, I realized maybe I wasn’t."
"She said I’d changed—that I wasn’t the man she fell in love with," he shrugged. "I started believing she was right. I tried to recalibrate myself, and for a while... we were happy."
"Were you?"
He paused, meeting her eyes. "I thought I was. But eventually, I realized she was right. I wasn’t the same person anymore—and neither was she. We were together only because of the ring I gave her."
"It wasn’t her fault," he said quietly. "It was mine. I chose work over her. I wasted her time trying to prove I was as normal as everyone else. But the truth is, no normal person lasts long around my boss or his family. You have to be... different. Excessive, even."
"One week after we broke up, I heard she was with someone else," he admitted. "She was happy. I saw it. And the strangest thing was... I felt relieved."
Silence fell between them. Lola stared off to the side, rocking her head slightly. She and Atlas rarely spoke about Allen’s personal life. She knew the basics, but nothing this intimate. Atlas wasn’t one to gossip; he preferred to listen rather than pry.
Though if anyone would spill the tea, it would be Lola.
"All I’m saying is, during that confusing time, Sir Charles would drag me out fishing with him," Allen continued. "I wasn’t his son or his son-in-law, but he treated me like one anyway—bossing me around and all." 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢
"And during one of those trips, he sat me down and thanked me," Allen said softly. "He even apologized if his son was too demanding. But more than that, the Bennet family treated me like family. Not because I worked for Sir Atlas, but because I belonged somewhere too."
"Maybe that’s why I stayed," he said. "Why I’m drawn to them. It’s also the time I realized that it’s not just added extra work. Why the Zorken family has to stand behind several countries, because if we didn’t, someone else would, and the imbalance could’ve been catastrophic."
Allen looked at Lola again and smiled. "Sir Charles raised four incredible people. They’re all different, but they stand together. I’m certain that whether it’s Sir Atlas, Sir Hugo, or even Slater—the people in Anteca won’t let anyone harm their family."
"Sir Charles protected his children," he added, his smile widening. "And now, they protect him. Miss Penny, Sir Zoren—even Sir Finn wouldn’t act recklessly. I believe in them, just as they believed in us, even from a thousand miles away."
Lola pressed her lips together, her shoulders finally relaxing as she nodded. "Thank you, Allen."
"Anytime, Madam."
"Then," Lola cleared her throat and straightened. "Let’s get back to work. So next time, Dad will be apologizing on my behalf too."
Allen chuckled as he pushed himself upright and nodded.
And just like that, the two of them returned to work—doing what they could from here, while placing their trust in those in Anteca.
