The Broken Angel & Her Overprotective Brothers-Chapter 377: The Shadow’s Pursuit
After Daniel’s wedding, the Alessandro Mansion became even more livelier. Emily also moved into the mansion for a month as December was about to arrive and the season of festivities was around the corner.
Christmas and New Year came and Emily felt like she was almost living her dream life. Everything seemed too perfect, too good, and too calm. Little did she know, a tsunami was approaching her silently and would soon throw her world upside down.
* * *
Emily’s breath came in ragged gasps as she stumbled through the darkness, her heart pounding against her chest like a trapped bird. The eerie silence was shattered only by the echoing sound of her own frantic footsteps. Every corner she turned seemed to lead her deeper into the abyss, with no escape in sight.
Shadows seemed to dance around her, twisting and contorting into grotesque shapes that flickered at the edge of her vision. They whispered sinister secrets, their voices chilling her to the bone. Emily tried to scream, but her throat felt constricted, as if invisible hands were squeezing the air from her lungs.
As she ran, she could feel the cold tendrils of darkness reaching out for her, clawing at her skin with icy fingers. Panic surged through her veins, driving her onward even as her muscles screamed in protest. She knew she had to keep moving, had to outrun whatever horror lurked in the depths of her subconscious.
But no matter how fast she ran, the shadows were always one step behind her, their presence looming ever closer. She could feel their malevolent gaze boring into her back, filling her with a primal terror that threatened to consume her whole.
Suddenly, Emily stumbled and fell, her hands scraping against the rough ground as she struggled to regain her footing. Desperate, she scrambled to her feet and turned to face her pursuers, her breath coming in ragged gasps.
The darkness seemed to coalesce into a single, towering figure, its form shifting and writhing like smoke in the wind. Its eyes glowed with a sickly red light, boring into Emily with a predatory gleam that sent shivers down her spine.
"Emilia..."
It suddenly spoke in a terrifying voice and Emily felt cold shivers running down her spine.
"It’s time for you to return to me, Emilia. Return to me."
It kept speaking while moving toward her, making Emily’s panic increase with every passing second.
With a primal scream, she turned and fled once more, her heart pounding in her chest like a drumbeat of doom. She could feel the darkness closing in around her, suffocating her with its suffocating embrace. But still, she ran, driven by a desperate need to escape the nightmare that threatened to consume her whole.
"Angel..."
The voice suddenly changed and Emily immediately recognized who it belonged to.
"Kaiden!" She desperately called out for her mate but the darkness was not letting go of her. "Kaiden!"
"Angel, wake up! I’m right here." Kaiden’s voice was filled with just as much desperation as she was feeling herself. She could feel her mate’s panic as he tried to pull her out of the clutches of the darkness that was tormenting her.
She suddenly felt a warm feeling surrounding her and with a sudden pull, she finally made it out of her nightmare.
Her eyes flew open and she gasped for breath. Slowly, she raised her head and looked around, blinking several times to adjust to the brightness that she found in front of her eyes.
"Angel..."
Kaiden’s soft voice made her turn her face to look at her mate sitting beside her on the bed. The look of worry on his face made her heart fill with distress. Moving to a sitting position, she threw her hands around him and he welcomed her immediately.
His warm embrace slowly melted away the coldness that the nightmare had filled her body with. After a long silence, he finally asked, "What happened?"
Emily didn’t answer immediately as she herself didn’t know what just happened. She was having a nice sleep in his arms when the nightmare suddenly invaded her mind. Something kept telling her that it was no natural nightmare but an invasion from someone who was trying to approach her.
Taking in a deep breath, she told him everything including the voice she heard in the nightmare. "Kaiden, I... I think I have heard that voice before."
Kaiden pulled away from the hug and looked at her face with seriousness as he asked, "Where, Angel? Can you recall?"
Slowly, Emily shook her head in negative. "I can’t. But I’m sure that I have heard that voice before... a long time ago."
Kaiden remained silent as he thought about something. He then pulled her back into his arm and started running his fingers through her hair, a gesture that always made Emily feel good.
"It’s alright. Don’t worry too much. I’m right here and Shadow will return in the morning as well. Just relax. No matter what it is, we will deal with it together." He ensured her and Emily nodded her head slowly as she scooted closer to him.
"Besides, don’t forget how powerful you have become now." He added and Emily found herself chuckling in response. Her mood finally lightened and she found herself realizing that she was covered in sweat.
Pulling away from his arms, she looked down at herself. Her hairline was damp from sweat. Her nape was also wet from all the sweating and her entire body was feeling sticky.
"What’s wrong?" Kaiden asked when he noticed the frown on her face.
"I need a bath. I’m going to take a bath. I need to feel refreshed." She told him before she planted a sweet peck on his looks and climbed down the bed. Without another word, she headed inside the bathroom.
On the other hand, Kaiden was still worried. Knowing his mate, he knew that if left alone, she would probably overthink the nightmare. A sudden idea popped into his brain and he climbed down from the bed to follow her.
