The Broken Angel & Her Overprotective Brothers-Chapter 387: The War (Part Four)
Emily felt her heart dropping at the sight of her mates who appeared exhausted and were struggling against the restraints that were keeping them in place, stopping them from attacking their enemy and finishing him off for once and for all.
Looking at them, she could tell that something other than those chains were keeping them restrained. While silver and iron were lethal for werewolves and vampires, both Shadow and Kaiden were too powerful to get affected by these elements to such a degree. What she didn’t know was that both the men had poison in their system that they got from the coffee they drank during their meeting. Their enemy was a step ahead of them.
She again felt Rylan’s tap on her hand and when she turned to look at him, she found him signaling to use mind-link to talk to him. Nodding her head, she did as she was told and opened a mind-link with Ryaln, something the two of them had never needed to use before.
"We need a plan, Em. We need to get those two free before we can openly fight with these monsters." Rylan’s voice was filled with anger as he glared at the rogues who inflicted harm on his brother. He wanted to shift into his wolf and tear every single one of them apart, but he knew that doing so would only create more trouble for them.
Emily touched his shoulder and gave it a tight squeeze, pulling her friend’s attention toward herself. "Calm down, Ry." Was all she said but it did its job as Rylan took several deep breaths and got a hold on his anger.
"We do need a plan and we don’t have much time." She stated as her mind raced, her heart pounding in her chest. She had underestimated their foe, and now her mates were paying the price. She knew they had to act quickly, but any misstep could be fatal.
However, it seemed like fate was not on her side because the man suddenly spoke, his voice ringing in the silent night. "My dear Emilia, since you are already here, why don’t you show yourself? You have until the count of three, or your mate here will suffer."
Emily’s breath caught in her throat. The enemy’s voice dripped with malice, and she knew he was not bluffing. After racking her brain, she had been finally able to recall his name. Rafael - that was what he used to call himself.
Taking in a deep breath, she glanced at Rylan, her eyes filled with determination. "We need to split up. I’ll distract him while you free Kaiden and Shadow."
Rylan’s eyes widened in alarm. "No, Em. It’s too dangerous. We need to stay together."
But Emily had already made up her mind. She placed a hand on Rylan’s shoulder, her grip firm. "Trust me, Ry. I have a plan."
Before he could protest further, she muttered a series of incantations under her breath. A shimmering veil of protection enveloped Rylan, rendering him safe from their enemy. She pressed a small vial into his hand. "This potion will dissolve the chains. Use it wisely."
Rylan nodded, though his heart was heavy with worry. "Be careful, Em."
Emily took another deep breath, steeling herself for what lay ahead. She stepped out from behind the thicket, her figure becoming visible as the spell of invisibility dissolved at her order. "I’m here," she called out, her voice steady despite the fear gnawing at her insides.
Rafael’s dark gaze snapped to her, a predatory smile spreading across his face. "Ah, there you are. I was beginning to think you’d abandoned your mate and friend over here."
Emily’s jaw clenched, but she forced herself to remain calm. "Let them go. This is between you and me."
Rafael laughed, a sound devoid of any warmth. "Oh, but it’s so much more fun with an audience." He raised the silver dagger, its blade gleaming wickedly in the moonlight. Without warning, he slashed Kaiden’s arm, eliciting a cry of pain that came from Emily.
Kaiden’s face contorted with agony, and Shadow’s growl of fury reverberated through the clearing. The sight fueled Emily’s resolve. She had to keep the enemy’s attention on her, no matter the cost.
"Stop! I’m the one you want," Emily shouted, stepping forward. "Leave them out of this."
Rafael’s eyes glittered with amusement. "Oh, I intend to. But first, a little entertainment." He gestured toward Emily with the dagger. "Come closer, and perhaps I’ll be merciful."
Emily moved slowly, deliberately, drawing his attention entirely on her. Meanwhile, hidden by the spells, Rylan crept towards Kaiden and Shadow, the vial of potion clutched tightly in his hand.
As Emily approached, she began to weave her own spells, subtle flicks of her fingers and silent words that she chanted in her mind. She needed to buy Rylan enough time. "Do you really want to destroy this world because of your greed for power? What’s the point of ruling a place where people will only look at you in fear instead of respect?"
Rafael’s smile faded slightly. "You know nothing! They will respect me, that’s their only option. This world needs a ruler like me. Supernaturals need to take control, and I’ll be the one leading them all to victory."
Emily was unable to help herself as she shook her head at the man’s stupidity. He was completely overtaken by his greed. The darkness of his powers had taken full control over him. "You will never succeed. I will never allow you to misuse my powers."
He sneered. "You don’t get to decide that. If I will not get to use your powers, I will destroy you along with your friends. Neither you nor your friends can stop me from getting what I want."
While everyone was distracted with Emily, Rylan reached Kaiden and Shadow. He uncorked the vial and carefully poured the potion over the chains. The metal sizzled and hissed, dissolving into nothingness.
