The CEO's Secret Obsession-Chapter 151: Clarity
For a split second, just one, Margaret’s mouth tightened but then she smiled.
"Well," Margaret said dryly, "it’s been a long time."
Ursula returned the smile which was equally composed. "Too long, you are still terrifying, I see."
Margaret huffed. "And you are still dramatic."
Pauline glanced between them, amused. "Shall we take this inside before the house overhears?"
Gregory greeted Pauline next, polite and reserved. "Thank you for hosting us."
"You are welcome here," Pauline replied simply. "All of you."
Alexander appeared then, stepping down the stairs from inside the mansion.
His eyes went straight to Evelyn.
Whatever formality the moment demanded, it softened instantly.
"You are here," he said quietly, relief unmistakable.
She nodded. "We are."
He offered his arm without thinking and she took it just as naturally.
Margaret watched the exchange with clear satisfaction.
"Alright," she said briskly. "Enough standing around. Let’s move inside before Benjamin decides to be punctual."
A faint, shared smile passed between Pauline and Ursula at that.
As the Carter family crossed the threshold, the doors closed behind them with a soft, final click.
Not sealing anything in but marking the beginning of something that could no longer be avoided.
.....
[Inside]
The sitting room slowly filled with quiet conversation as everyone settled in.
Evelyn sat beside Alexander on the sofa with his arm resting lightly behind her, protective but relaxed.
Across from them, Gregory and Melissa listened with amused smiles as Margaret and Ursula fell into familiar, sharp-edged banter.
"So this is the famous Reid mansion," Ursula said, glancing around lazily. "Still standing, I am impressed."
Margaret scoffed. "It would take more than time and bad decisions to bring this house down."
Ursula smiled sweetly. "Oh, I wasn’t talking about the house."
Melissa bit back a laugh and Gregory sighed. "Mother—"
"Oh hush," Ursula waved him off. "I am just pleased Margaret hasn’t softened with age."
Margaret lifted her chin. "And I am pleased you haven’t lost your mouth."
The tension dissolved into light laughter.
Near the window, Patricia and Lucas exchanged a polite smile. It was brief, restrained and almost formal. There was no usual teasing or sparring.
They were just two people very aware of everything unsaid between them.
Then the room shifted.
Heels clicked softly against the marble and Olivia entered.
The laughter faltered not abruptly but enough to be noticed. Conversations thinned and even the air felt tighter.
Ursula turned, assessing the woman with quiet curiosity. "Oh?" she asked lightly. "And who might this be?"
There was silence as no one spoke.
Olivia hesitated, her fingers curling slightly at her side. Her gaze flicked once to Benjamin’s empty seat, then back to the room.
"I am Olivia," she said carefully. "Benjamin’s wife."
The words landed.
Margaret’s lips parted ready to say something but Ursula was faster.
She turned her head toward Pauline instead, her tone calm and precise. "Pauline," she asked, "you are still legally married to Benjamin Reid, yes?"
Pauline met her gaze without flinching. "Yes."
Ursula nodded once. "And that has never changed?"
"No," Pauline replied evenly.
Ursula turned back to Olivia with her expression almost apologetic.
"I am sorry, dear," she said pleasantly. "But that would make you Benjamin’s mistress, not his wife."
The room froze.
Melissa’s eyes widened then she looked away, clearly fighting a smile.
Margaret didn’t bother. She leaned back, thoroughly enjoying herself.
Gregory straightened sharply. "Mother—"
Ursula raised a hand, silencing him without even looking. "There is nothing wrong with stating the truth," she said calmly. "Especially when everyone is thinking about it."
Olivia’s face drained of color.
Pauline remained seated, composed with her hands folded in her lap saying nothing. There was nothing to say.
Alexander felt Evelyn stiffen beside him. His hand closed gently over hers.
No one spoke because there was nothing left to say.
And Olivia had never felt more exposed in her life.
Just then, Benjamin arrived without announcement.
Everyone looked at him the moment he stepped inside. He had his coat draped over his arm, his expression composed and eyes sharp enough to take in everything at once.
He stopped just inside the doorway.
The silence told him enough.
His gaze moved first to Alexander and Evelyn—seated together and steady. Then to Gregory and Melissa.
Then to Ursula and Margaret, both wearing expressions that suggested something entertaining had just occurred.
Finally, his eyes landed on Olivia.
She stood stiffly near the side table, color still leached from her face, jaw tight and her pride visibly fractured.
Benjamin’s brow furrowed just slightly.
"What did I miss?" he asked calmly.
No one answered.
Ursula turned toward him, assessing him the way only someone who had known powerful men all her life could. "We were just clarifying introductions," she said pleasantly.
Benjamin first greeted Ursula, shook hands with Gregory and gave Melissa a respectful nod.
Then he walked forward.
Olivia turned instinctively. Relief flickered across her face as she took half a step toward him.
"Benjamin—"
He didn’t look at her, he didn’t slow or acknowledge that she had spoken at all.
He stopped beside Pauline and took his pace.
Only then did he speak.
"Dinner?" he asked quietly.
Pauline nodded once. "In a few minutes."
"Good." 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦
Margaret observed him over the rim of her glasses, something sharp and pleased in her expression.
Ursula leaned back slightly, studying the scene like a woman who had just watched a verdict delivered without words.
Olivia stood frozen.
She tried again, softer this time. "Benjamin, I was just—"
He turned his head then slowly and his eyes met hers. It wasn’t angry or emotional but it was empty.
"We will talk later," he said.
It wasn’t a promise but a dismissal.
Then he turned back to Pauline, already done with the moment.
Olivia felt it then. Not the humiliation but the shift, the erasure.
Around them, the room breathed again and conversations resumed cautiously but something fundamental had changed.
Ursula broke the silence lightly, eyes twinkling.
"Well," she said, "that was illuminating."
Margaret smiled into her teacup.
And Olivia who was standing alone at the edge of the room, finally understood something she had refused to see for twenty years.
She had never been standing beside Benjamin but only near him.
And now that Benjamin had decided he didn’t want her near him, she had lost her place in the Reid family.
