Chapter 175: Chapter 175: Shopping for a Gift

Rona Langdon shot Vera Xavier a glare, but Vera just giggled and ignored her completely.

Zachary Preston then said, "This weekend is Master Nathan’s birthday. He just called and invited our whole family over for a casual meal."

Cara Preston, who had been lying down upstairs pretending to be weak and resting, immediately sat up, her eyes shining. In her eyes, this was a fantastic opportunity.

The last time Master Nathan visited, Vera had caught her off guard and greatly impressed him, winning his favor.

She knew full well that Master Nathan held an extremely high status in the Nathan Family. Earning his admiration meant she’d be halfway to marrying into their family. Therefore, she had to seize this opportunity, no matter what.

Rona Langdon’s eyes also lit up when she heard this. To her, this was also a perfect opportunity to deal with Vera Xavier!

Master Nathan’s birthday was just over ten days before the college entrance exams. If Vera were to have some sort of ’accident’ and get injured, it would be perfectly normal for her to miss the exams.

So she smiled and said, "He’s celebrating his birthday. Even if he says it’s just a casual meal, we can’t show up empty-handed. We need to prepare something nice. Zachary, you’re always busy with work and don’t have time to prepare a gift. Let me handle it!"

Zachary Preston knew she was a social climber. She had made her desire to get in with the Nathan Family clear before, so of course, she wouldn’t miss an opportunity now that Master Nathan himself had extended an invitation. He hesitated for a moment but still gave a nod.

Rona Langdon smiled faintly and said shamelessly, "Household expenses are high, and I’ve already spent all of your salary from last month. So, you see..."

She was now brazenly asking for money. Zachary Preston frowned slightly, took two hundred out of his wallet, and handed it to her. She looked at it with disdain. "Who do you think Master Nathan is? All four of us are going to his birthday. We can’t prepare a decent gift with just two hundred..."

Zachary Preston frowned again, then took out another three hundred and handed them to her. "I don’t think Master Nathan is the type to care about extravagance or superficial gestures. Our being there is what matters. He won’t care about the value of our gift. Besides, he knows our family’s situation."

Rona had intended to get his entire month’s salary out of him; otherwise, it wouldn’t be enough for her schemes. But since he’d put it that way, she didn’t dare push too hard. She said reluctantly, "I’m just afraid he’ll look down on us if our gift is too small and cheap."

"He’s not that kind of person," Zachary Preston said in a low voice. "Just make sure it’s not disrespectful."

Rona Langdon opened her mouth, clearly displeased, but at least she’d gotten five hundred. She didn’t dare argue with Zachary Preston any further, so the matter was settled for now.

Hearing this, Vera Xavier mulled it over. ’Master Nathan has been very good to me,’ she thought, ’and I’m already legally married to Nathaniel Nathan. Even though Master Nathan doesn’t know that yet, I’m technically his granddaughter-in-law. I can’t possibly show up without a gift.’

She knew that with the Nathan Family’s wealth, they didn’t lack for anything. The most important thing about a gift, therefore, was the thought behind it. But it wouldn’t be easy to prepare a thoughtful gift in such a short amount of time.

That evening, while Zachary Preston was in the shower, Cara Preston slipped into Rona Langdon’s room. "Mom, this is our golden opportunity to get in with the Nathan Family. We absolutely cannot miss it. We have to seize this chance!"
