The CEO's Wife Is a Medical Master-Chapter 23: I Will Cherish It
A rare, awkward expression crossed Nathaniel Nathan’s face. Vera Xavier giggled. "Don’t worry. Whether you bought it at a street stall or it’s a family heirloom, it’s a gift from you. I’ll be sure to treasure it and won’t let it get banged up."
She winked at him. "I was just teasing you!"
She had already stuffed the clothes and shoes into her backpack, and now, clutching a huge pile of books, she wobbled her way back to the residential compound.
Nathaniel Nathan watched her retreating figure and raised an eyebrow. She seemed much more lively than before, sharp and mischievous. He knew she must have figured out the bracelet’s value and had been deliberately teasing him.
For the first time in his life, Nathaniel Nathan had been teased, yet he felt the day was utterly perfect. Even the blades of grass by the road seemed more pleasing to the eye.
When Vera Xavier got home with her books, Rona Langdon was already there. The moment she saw Vera, her expression soured.
Cara Preston, however, ran over to help her with the books. "Sis, why did you buy so many books? Huh... they’re all high school textbooks..."
Rona Langdon chimed in from nearby, "With her abilities, it’s useless even if she buys every single textbook. She’ll still get a zero, just like always."
Vera Xavier didn’t get angry and said nonchalantly, "I doubt it. I’m pretty sure I can get at least one point."
Rona Langdon was so infuriated she could have coughed up blood. She glared fiercely at Vera, who just smiled and said, "I’m kidding, Mom. Don’t take it to heart. How could I possibly score just one point? With so many classes, even if I only get one point in each, that would still add up to seven points."
Without waiting for Rona Langdon to start yelling, she hugged her books and headed upstairs. Still, she could hear Rona’s angry voice drift up: "How can she be so smug about getting one point? I’ve never seen anyone so worthless and shameless!"
Vera Xavier paid her no mind, treating her words as nothing but noise.
Cara Preston, however, had sharp eyes and spotted the bracelet on her wrist. She followed her right into her room. "Sis, that bracelet is beautiful! Where did you get it?"
Due to years of hard labor, Vera Xavier’s palms and fingertips were covered in thick calluses. However, her skin was fair and her hands were beautifully shaped. The verdant green bracelet on her wrist looked dazzling, making her hands appear even more exquisite.
She said with feigned casualness, "I got it at a street stall. A dollar fifty."
Cara Preston lost interest instantly. She was still young, after all, and the Preston family wasn’t wealthy, surviving solely on Zachary Preston’s salary. As a result, she had never seen expensive jade before.
She smiled and said, "Even though it’s cheap, it still cost a dollar fifty. Sis, you should probably take it off. If Mom sees it, she’ll just say you’re being a spendthrift again."
On the surface, it sounded like she was looking out for Vera, but her words carried a malicious undertone.
Vera Xavier blinked, then raised her voice loud enough for Rona Langdon to hear downstairs. "Cara, how could you talk about Mom being stingy behind her back? Mom is so dignified and generous! She’s always treated you the best. If she heard you say that, she’d be absolutely heartbroken!"
Cara Preston’s expression stiffened. A moment later, they heard Rona Langdon yelling from downstairs, "Cara Preston, get down here now!"
Vera Xavier covered her mouth with her hand, her face a mask of shock. "Oh no, Mom heard! Cara, I’m so sorry!"
’Something has been off about Vera ever since she returned this time,’ Cara Preston thought. She gave Vera a complicated look, but Vera acted as if nothing had happened and simply went on organizing the books Nathaniel Nathan had given her.
