The CEO's Wife Is a Medical Master-Chapter 74: You Can Keep Pretending
Before Vera Xavier could even close the door, she heard Rona Langdon’s curses drifting up from downstairs. She had no idea what Cara Preston told Rona, but while the shouting had subsided, it was replaced by a stream of thinly veiled insults aimed at Vera.
The words were nasty, but Vera paid them no mind, treating them as nothing more than Rona spouting nonsense. She didn’t return to her room, knowing that even if she did, Cara would just come looking for her right away and interrupt her studying.
Sure enough, less than three minutes later, Cara came upstairs.
She must have been slapped by Rona Langdon; half her face was red and swollen, and her eyes were brimming with tears.
As soon as she came up, she pulled Vera into the room and shut the door. "Sister, how could you do this? Mom already gave all your things back, so why didn’t you say anything?"
Vera put on a wronged expression. "I was about to tell you, but you cut me off."
Cara recalled that Vera had, in fact, been trying to say something. She gritted her teeth and stared at her. "Sister, I’m not trying to criticize you, but how could you call the police over something so minor? How is Mom supposed to face anyone after this?"
"I didn’t know she was the one who took my things!" Vera said, her face a mask of innocence. "If I had known, I would never have called the police."
Her words cut Cara off completely. Cara opened her mouth, but found she couldn’t utter a single word of criticism against Vera.
Besides, Rona Langdon was far too prideful to ever admit to Cara that Vera had held a pair of scissors to her throat. She only told her that Vera had gone crazy and cut up the dress.
With an air of "concern," Vera said to Cara, "Cara, you should be more careful from now on. Mom’s temper has been pretty bad lately. If she hadn’t pushed me so hard today, I wouldn’t have..."
Cara looked at Vera, who appeared so well-behaved and timid. She felt a little confused, unable to tell if this was Vera’s true self or just an act. But either way, this version of Vera felt deeply unsettling.
Failing to get the reaction she wanted, Cara was annoyed. "We have exams tomorrow. You should get to bed early."
Vera nodded. But then Cara remembered something else and asked, "By the way, Sis, how did your exams go today? I noticed you were the first to hand in your test every time."
Vera said softly, "I did my best..."
To Cara’s ears, this automatically translated to: ’I tried my best, but I still didn’t know how to answer the questions, so I just handed it in early.’
Cara lost all interest in speaking with Vera. "Just try your best tomorrow. Whether you know the answers or not, you should at least fill everything out, even if you’re just guessing. Maybe the teacher will see your hard work and give you some points for effort."
Vera nodded. The moment Cara turned away, the smile on her face vanished completely, replaced by thick disdain and mockery. Once the exams were over tomorrow and the graded tests were returned, not even Zachary Preston would be able to protect Vera.
’Even though I got a slap from Rona Langdon downstairs, it wasn’t for nothing. I used the opportunity to poison Rona’s mind against Vera even more. All I have to do is wait for the exam results to be released. That will give Rona the perfect excuse to deal with Vera, who will then pay a terrible price—she will definitely be kicked right out of the house!’
Vera had no interest in guessing at Cara’s thoughts. It was always the same thing, anyway: just another scheme to try and screw her over.
