The CEO's Wife Is a Medical Master-Chapter 95: Worried for Nothing
Juliana Taylor hurriedly agreed.
When Vera Xavier returned to the classroom carrying a huge pile of test papers, she once again drew the stares of all her classmates. She had seen this kind of look so often lately that she could now completely ignore it.
But this time, the gazes directed at her were no longer filled with the intense hostility of before. Instead, they held a measure of shock and surprise.
When Cara Preston saw the change in everyone’s eyes as they looked at Vera Xavier, and recalled the other girl’s earlier taunts, her expression turned quite ugly.
Cara Preston took a deep breath, telling herself to calm down no matter what. ’I absolutely will not be outdone by Vera Xavier!’
So she stood up, walked over to Vera Xavier’s side, and said with a beaming, seemingly sincere smile, "Sister, really, congratulations!"
Vera Xavier smiled back. "If I did well on the exam this time, it’s actually all thanks to you."
"Thanks to me?" Cara Preston faltered.
Vera Xavier said earnestly, "That’s right. If you hadn’t always encouraged me to study hard, Mom would’ve made me go get a job. So, without you, there’s no way I could have gotten such a good score."
Cara Preston was so furious at these words she nearly choked. She had been sure that even if Vera Xavier gave it her all, she wouldn’t do very well, and that Rona Langdon would definitely send her off to work.
That was why she hadn’t hesitated to say a few words encouraging Vera to study hard, never expecting Vera to actually throw those words right back in her face!
She looked at Vera Xavier’s smiling face and wanted nothing more than to lunge forward and claw it to shreds, but she had no choice but to restrain herself!
She forced a smile and said, "Is that so? Seeing you do so well makes me happier than if I’d done well myself. But, Sister, where have you been staying these past few nights? You haven’t been coming home. Mom and I have been so worried about you."
As soon as she said this, all the students turned to look at Vera Xavier again. Even though they were high school seniors, staying out all night was still a very serious offense.
Vera scoffed inwardly at Cara’s claim. ’Cara, worried about me? More like she’s trying to sabotage me!’
She smiled and said, "Thank you for your concern. I’m fine. I went back to the countryside after my exams."
Going back to the Xavier family home in the countryside was always Vera’s best excuse. That one sentence should have been enough to shut Cara up.
However, she had underestimated Cara’s tenacity. Cara continued, "Sister, you’ve changed. Now you’re even lying! I went to the countryside to look for you yesterday, and Mrs. Xavier said you hadn’t come home at all."
Vera’s expression remained perfectly calm. "Mom and Uncle were trying to force me to go work in Corvale. I told Mrs. Xavier about it and repeatedly instructed her that no matter who from the Preston family came by, she was to say I wasn’t home. Cara, I’m truly sorry. I didn’t know it would be you. If I had, I wouldn’t have told her to say that and made you worry about me for no reason."
The more sincere Vera sounded, the uglier the expression on Cara Preston’s face became.
After all, Cara Preston was Mrs. Xavier’s biological daughter, yet Mrs. Xavier had helped Vera lie to her.
Cara Preston forced a smile. "Honestly, Vera. No matter how Mom treats you, she means well. You should just come home today!"
Vera nodded. "I didn’t dare come home before because I was afraid Mom wouldn’t believe I could do well on my exams. Now that they’re over, of course I’m coming home."
