Chapter 111: 2.6

"Lucienta?!" Jannah cried out, her heart beating rapidly as she scrambled to get off her horse, her hands letting go of the reins in a hurry and almost tripping on the stirrups as she did so.

"Countess!" A shout came behind her.

Princess Huenazia and Duke Eulicies called out to her at the same time, both getting down from their horses and running after her.

The Countesses head maid lay crumpled on the ground, her weak and almost battered body barely conscious beneath the weight of the dormant zombies.

Jannah could hear the head maid’s breathing come in shallow gasps, the air escaping her lungs in short bursts.

Lucienta’s body was covered in dirt and blood while under the thick press of the undead creatures that surrounded her and on top of her.

Jannah took a quick scan of their surroundings, the debris around Lucienta was an obvious sign that the zombies had come crashing down on her from the second floor of the building.

Broken furniture and shattered glass were scattered around the pink haired lady’s prone body, the remnants of a once furnished room now a mess of broken pieces, fallen debris, broken woods— everything.

The walls were scorched and charred, something that shouldn’t be there because Jannah couldn’t remember the Kentucky catching a fire on it before they left for Rye.

Above the Countess, the maid, and the pile of undeads, the remains of the second floor of the house still hung dangerously in place, the broken floor holding on by a few stubborn floor boards.

Seeing that the second floor must have given in under all the weight of the zombies sleeping on it and fell on the oblivious Lucienta, Jannah frowned.

She approached her head maid, her footsteps slowing down into a quiet jog, afraid that it might wake up the sleeping flesh eating monsters.

Lucienta’s eyes flickered open and shut, her awareness slipping in and out of consciousness, her strength slowly fading, but a small relieved smile creeped into her lips when she saw the person she served.

The pile of dormant zombies continuously pressed down on her, their heavy weight holding her captive beneath their unmoving bodies.

Jannah didn’t waste any time to rush towards the pink haired lady laying under the weight of the undeads, her eyes scanning the pile to see if she could move them before landing on Lucienta.

"How did you end up in this situation?" Jannah hissed, her eyebrows creasing in frustration and worry.

Though, as much as she wanted to hear an answer from her, she didn’t have enough time to do so and quickly stood up, her hands grasping the zombie on the farthest top.

Kill the ones I’m going to throw at you. Jannah said to the communication link with the Duke and unceremoniously threw the zombie she grabbed without warning, her muscle taut inside of her coat.

My lady?! The Duke could only do as he was told, his eyes going wide as he withdrew his sword from its sheath.

Kill the zombie I’m going to throw at you. The Countess also said to the communication link with the princess, making the red haired lady flinch.

Countess Rafelon?! The crowned princess exclaimed through the link as she withdrew her sword in a hurry, her jaw dropping slightly out of shock when Jannah threw a zombie her way.

Jannah moved as fast as she could, grabbing a random zombie in the pile and throwing it over her shoulder, not even caring if the princess or the duke was catching it.

It must have been the adrenaline rush pumping through her veins, but Jannah felt like a minute had not passed when she finally got rid of the pile of flesh eating monsters on top of Lucienta.

She kneeled down beside the barely conscious woman, her hands slipping underneath Lucienta’s head and knees as she cast her healing skill, salvation, to heal Lucienta.

On the other hand, the Duke stood in the middle of the unmoving zombies, his chest heaving up and down.

His clothes stained with blood, the fabric dripping slightly and clinging to him in a way that highlighted his strong physique while his face was streaked with blood, the crimson liquid mixing with the sweat that dripped down his face and neck, the liquid making his features look almost demonic.

His hand tightened around the handle of his sword, the adrenaline that had fueled him fading quickly as the sudden fight ended.

Beside him, the red haired woman stood, her hand gripping the handle of her sharp blade, her clothes were also stained with blood, the red liquid standing out starkly against the light colored fabric.

Her face was splattered with red as well, the blood streaking down her cheek and chin. Her chest rose and fell with each deep breath, her lungs laboring to fill with air.

Her previously tamed hair was now disheveled and wild, her red hair flying wildly around her face with her eyes changing into a deep shade of orange in the thick fog, as if it was glowing slightly in the dark.

Like usual, since the outbreak started, the air was thick with the smell of blood and decaying flesh, the stench of death filling the space.

Despite the sudden order from black haired woman who was kneeling and healing one of the members of their little scavenging group, they still managed to kill every single zombie that she threw their way.

What use would it be if they whined and complained anyways? That would only ruin their image for the Countess.

Seeing that Jannah had successfully healed Lucienta, Duke Eulicies’s and Princess Huenazia’s body relaxed, their shoulders sagging forward as they simultaneously let out a sigh of relief.

When the Countess suddenly made a run for it somewhere, the two of them felt their heart dropping to their stomach before they ran after her.

They barely made it through the putrid and thick fog in the town so they can’t think of what would have happened if they lost the Countess as she ran to Lucienta’s rescue?

"She’s fine." Jannah’s voice had snapped the Duke and the Princess out of their daze, "Let’s go. We don’t have time to waste here, the sun will rise soon and it would be bad if we get caught in the horde that will wake up."

"Understood." Duke Eulicies said, answering for the Princess as well.

Wordlessly, the Duke accompanied the Countess to her horse and took the head maid from her arms carefully before she got up to her stallion, settling herself comfortably in her saddle.

Then, she took Lucienta from Duke Eulicies, putting her in front of her and letting the woman lean her body against Jannah.

"Keep an eye out for her horse." Jannah told the two high-ranking people, "She might be somewhere around us. We might pass by her so keep your eyes open and ears strained as much as possible."

"Yes, my lady."

"Understood, Countess Rafelon."

The two of them spoke up at the same time, letting Jannah know that they heard her.

With that in mind, Jannah kicked the stirrups against her stallion’s side and urged the horse forward which made Demo start galloping his way towards the exit of the town.

The three of them kept their ears strained the best they could, listening for any noises that sounded similar to a horse’s whine on the way to the gates, but all they would hear was a drop of water.

Nothing else.

Jannah even kept glancing at the map in hopes of finding Lucienta’s horse, but unfortunately, the map only showed herself and her people.

"What happened?" Jeriel and Kirie asked, gasping out of shock and fright when Jannah emerged from the thick fog circulating inside the town of Kentucky.

"A house collapsed on her." Jannah informed them as she nodded her head to silently greet the three of them, "I already healed her so she might continue being unconscious until we reach Chivahon."

"What about her horse, my lady?" Kirie inquired, her eyebrows furrowed in worry.

"We tried to look for it on our way out, but I think she already ran off somewhere or worse, met her end when Lucienta fell over." Jannah answered, her voice void of emotion as she glanced at Kirie.

"It would be best if we leave now." The Countess quickly stated, tightening her hold on Lucienta.

"As you wish, my lady." The white haired Count agreed, making the others nod their heads to show that they also agreed to what she just said.

Jannah ordered the horse on with her heels, the majestic animal responded immediately, his legs propelling him forward at a gallop.

She held onto the reins tightly as if her life depended on it, her body shifting in the saddle as she urged the horse to run faster, her body was hunched over the unconscious woman, her arms locked gently around the smaller form to keep her steady.

The Countess’s eyes were fixed on the path ahead of her, her mind focused on getting the unconscious head maid to safety.

The horse’s strides were fast and rough, his body surging forward with each pump of his powerful legs, leaving Jannah’s body shaking from the tremors each gallop he made.

No one dared to speak, all of them knew how much Lucienta meant to Jannah.

If she wants to reach Chivahon before sunrise, then she will.
