The Creatures That We Are-Chapter 1107: Easy to Say
Chapter 1107: Easy to Say
Departure hall, Li City Airport, late at night.
The most recent flight to West Nation would take off in thirty minutes. A young man in a thin gray trenchcoat sat in the empty waiting hall, his long hair messily tied into a ponytail. His face was pale and sunken, his eyes broodingly quiet.
There was a half-empty bottle of water by his seat. The matcha cake he had bought from the cakery was only half finished.
The system manifested silently beside him, taking the form of the familiar dorm keeper but now dressed in the crisp uniform of airport ground staff. She sat beside Gao Yang with a polite smile.
“Please look at the screen, sir.”
The dorm keeper lifted a hand, and the window wall—previously filled with the deep night sky—transformed into a large screen, displaying Gao Yang's current stats and Talents.

“It’ll take 7680 Luck points to comprehend another Talent, 5000 Luck points to make another wish.”
Gao Yang frowned slightly. “Best-case scenario, I’ll need 12680 Luck points to get a Talent I want.”
“May be two Talents,” she said in a lilting voice.
Gao Yang curled his lips. “Ah, yes. I have a chance of getting an additional Talent. Is there an unspecified restriction to the bonus Talent? For example, it won’t be a top twelve Talent.”
“What do you think?” The dorm keeper smiled. That was answer enough.
Gao Yang quietly looked up at the screen. The dorm keeper spoke up again like a friend playing his confidant.
“What are you going to comprehend?”
“Any good advice?” Gao Yang asked.
“Eidos will be the priority. Then Judge.”
“Why?”
“First off, Eidos is powerful. And holistically speaking, you lack the means to inflict psychic damage, rule-based damage, and spiritual damage at the moment. Eidos can fill one of the spots and turn it into your strong suit.”
“That makes some sense.”
“There’s more.” The dorm keeper continued with the analysis proudly. “Among the death monsters you’re facing, Pride is the most powerful. Pride, Wang Zikai, is weakest to psychic damage. Eidos will help you win when you fight Pride.”
The familiar name made Gao Yang’s heart clench. Rationally, he had given up the wishful thinking that he could avoid a fight with Wang Zikai, but could he really do it when the day came?
Perhaps he would never have an answer until that very moment.
Once more, Gao Yang compartmentalized everything about Wang Zikai and put it aside, pretending that his best friend was his best friend, and Pride was Pride.
“Talk about Judge.”
“Sure thing.” The dorm keeper flashed him a phony smile. “Judge is a rule-based Talent, filling another hole in your arsenal. And its domain is on by default. You only need your companions to keep the enemies busy for a moment to use the Talent.”
“Once inside, you get to define fairness. If you’re lucky, you can just execute the enemies, or at least ensure mutual destruction. That’s a bargain.”
“A bargain?” Gao Yang smiled bitterly. “Does my life not matter?”
“Oh.” The dorm keeper nudged his shoulder. “Isn’t there Gamer? And you can always create a true double beforehand. There is no problem without a solution.”
“Besides, won’t it be nice if your sacrifice alone is enough to defeat the death monsters? Heroes don’t have to live long. They just have to bring people hope.”
“Easy for you to say while you’re just standing on the sidelines,” Gao Yang said.
“Well,” the dorm keeper winked, “I’m sitting.”
“Thanks for the advice. Let’s hope I’ll get enough Luck points before the final battle.”
“No worries. You may seek me out whenever you feel troubled. My heart is always open to you.”
She made a heart gesture at him before vanishing.
Gao Yang thought for a quiet moment. Then he rose to his feet and walked to the restroom.
The restroom was empty. He stood before the sink and took out the diary and Black Gold fountain pen from the inner pocket of his trenchcoat. Flipping the diary open, he quickly jotted down a few words.
Thirty seconds later, a white light flashed out of the diary. Baili Yi emerged in his long white coat.
“Something I can help you with?” Baili Yi’s gaze was melancholy, but his smile was warm.
“Yes, I want to talk to you. Is that alright?”
Baili Yi nodded. “Of course. But I won’t say a word about the topics I can’t discuss. For example, Mark finding you a few days ago. Please understand.”
“That’s fine.” Gao Yang turned around. “Come on. I’ll buy you coffee.”
Ten minutes later, the two men each ordered a cup of coffee and sat down in the waiting area.
“This brings me back.” Baili Yi looked out of the window wall with his coffee. “The last time we did this, we were in a hospital.”
“Feels like a lifetime ago,” Gao Yang said.
“That’s a little dramatic.”
“Not at all.” Gao Yang took a sip and said, “I have questions.”
“Go on.”
“You keep emphasizing that you only provide guidance rather than take control over our causality.”
“Yes.”
“I find the line blurry.”
“How so?”
Gao Yang tapped his finger against the side of his cup, gathering his thoughts. “Take Liu Qingying as an example. She sought me out before her death and said that she had made a wrong move that changed the situation. She wanted to make it right, so she joined the Ocean River Union to keep an eye on Qilin. That, however, made her a tool to blow up the Millenium Tower.”
Baili Yi nodded. “That was what happened.”
“Looking back, Liu Qingying must have meant her seeking out the Union to kill Dust. She believed that had undermined your plan. Wouldn’t that be your existence interfering with her causality?”
Baili Yi nodded. “I once said that Liu Qingying believed my goal to be opening the Gates. That isn’t of my making, and thus its causality isn’t connected to me.”
“Besides, when Liu Qingying asked if her move would prevent me from making my checkmate, I didn’t reply to her, but instead told her that I would give her a response in three days. She made the decision in advance of her own volition. While she was collecting information for me, she didn’t do anything or make any decision for me and my goal, but her own: avenge Ba Qiuchi, and open the Gates.”
“Then what about Ba Qiuchi?” Gao Yang pressed.
