The Crimson Reaper-Chapter 55: My Car!
"You are awake," Luciel said to Helen as he entered the living room, having a gentle smile written on his face the moment he saw her.
He already knew that his wife had been awake for quite some time now, chatting with Melisa, but he decided to pretend like he didn’t know that.
Luciel didn’t want to put Melisa in the awkward spot. She was always pretending to be tough on the surface, so listening in also meant peaking into her privacy, but thanks to his hearing, Luciel couldn’t help himself but listen.
"How are you feeling?" He asked Helen, not taking his eyes off her while leading George toward the kid.
"My body is a little bit stiff, but I’ll manage." She answered him, fixing her glasses.
Luciel felt better when he heard her answer, being glad that he managed to control himself despite his hunger and stop drinking more of her blood before causing her any harm.
"This is the one?" George asked once he approached the girl who was lying on the other couch.
"Unfortunately," Luciel answered, glancing at George who was inspecting her condition before placing both of his hands together, and starting to chant.
"So, what happened while I was asleep?" Melisa asked, trying to figure out how her husband was feeling now.
Seeing him for the first time and having a talk, he seemed broken from the inside, exhausted, hungry and so done with everything, but after having a snack and all that, he seemed to be doing a lot better.
Luciel went to sit down next to her, placing his hand around her shoulder, and pressing her tightly against his body.
He gave her a quick rundown of the meeting, getting her back on track.
"What do you think, should we go by foot or wait for transportation?" Luciel asked, not being sure about the best course of action.
Both options had their advantages and disadvantages. Staying here and waiting for transport meant that there were higher chances for all of them to arrive safely at their destination, but who knows for how long they would need to wait and their food was running out.
On the other hand, moving meant that they would probably reach their destination faster, the time it would take them by walking to reach the church was around an hour. If they found the church, they found the shelter.
"Walking would be better," Helen answered after thinking about it. "Almost all hunters had fled the Paradise and only a few remained. There are still many people outside the shelter that need help. Our party consists of very strong individuals, so even if risky, we should manage."
She suggested, thinking it would be the best course of action. And even if they stayed here, no one guarantees that they won’t get attacked, either by a vampire or a zombie.
"Sounds good to me, but we move once the night has fallen," Luciel added since it was important to remember. Melisa and he cannot move during the day, putting the group at a small disadvantage.
Yawning, Luciel placed his hand on Helen’s shoulder, wanting to get some rest, but just as he was about to fall asleep, he jolted, raising his head at the sudden, familiar voice.
"What is the meaning of this!" Alex shouted, standing at the front door, looking at the situation with his hands on his hips.
"Why didn’t you use your divine art to help me out as well?!" He wanted an explanation after being left out like this.
Luciel clenched his fist as his eyes narrowed, trying to stay calm, to control his anger. Ever since becoming a vampire, he discovered that he also had a short fuse unlike before, but irritability was overflowing through his body and he couldn’t keep it in anymore.
"Alex!" He raised his voice and his eyes started to light up as anger started to settle in after recovering from the shock that his friend had given him.
"Oh... Luciel..." Alex’s sound suddenly went from one hundred to one when he heard Luciel starting to growl at him, slowly getting up, punching the palm of his hand with his fist.
’Fuck... I messed up didn’t I?’ He gulped, wanting to flee from the oncoming destiny that he could have prevented if he had read the room.
Alex didn’t even notice Luciel at first since he was focusing on George, but now seeing his best friend like this, Alex realized that he might have broken a moment.
"I’ll make sure to send you back from where you came from." Luciel threatened, grabbing him by the collar, and throwing him right from where he came from.
"Hey! That was my trusty steed!" Alex shouted, slowly getting up and going to inspect his car that he was thrown into. Luckily Luciel didn’t use his full strength so the vehicle didn’t get damaged, but Alex seemed like he was about to cry when he turned around.
"You made a scratch on my car!" He shouted, pointing toward a tiny, white line on the hood.
"Eh?" Luciel had to squint very hard to notice the damage that Alex had mentioned, but even with his sharp vision, he couldn’t see anything.
"Oh please..." Luciel rolled his eyes, crossing his arms, "That one was probably there for who knows how long. Besides, from where did you pop out?"
He felt confused at the appearance of his friend whose only mission seemed to be not letting him sleep with Helen next to him.
"From the car," Alex answered, polishing the car with the sleeve of his white battle suit, hoping that the scratch would go away.
This car didn’t have any big significance to him, it’s just that he had it for a while and they spent many miles together. It was his trusty steed that would carry him wherever he would go.
"What were you doing in the car all this time?" Luciel asked, raising his eyebrow. He thought that Alex was somewhere else, doing whatever he needed.
"Erm... That might be my fault."
Luciel turned around to look at Melisa who was speaking, scratching her cheek while avoiding eye contact.
"What do you mean?" Luciel questioned even more, constantly shifting his gaze between Melisa and Alex.
"Oh, she was starving so we fed her with Alex." Helen facepalmed at the two idiots bickering at one another. Her husband was causing a ruckus for nothing, but she let it slide since he was a good friend of Alex, who... Was overreacting about the car.
"Good, you can feed him to her next time as well." Luciel nodded in approval, walking back to his wife and sitting down next to her.
"LUCIEL!" Alex shouted in anger, making everyone look at him, wondering what was going on.
"Quiet," Luciel ordered, looking at his friend with only one eye while the other one was closed.
"Let us rest, we are heading out once the sun sets. Ask Scarlet to fill you in." Luciel laughed internally, sending Alex to Scarlet was like killing two birds with one stone, they hated one another since both of them were going on each one’s nerves.
"But-" Alex was about to retaliate, but Helen put her finger over her mouth, indicating for Alex to stay quiet.
"Fine." He pressed his lips together, but did as he was told at the end.
A dangerous mission was waiting for the group in the few hours where anything could happen and Helen couldn’t help but feel nervous, having a bad feeling about this.
