Chapter 64: Scarlet and Melisa

"All right, now when we are finally done. I’ll show you kids where you can sleep." Jack said in a stern voice, his hands behind his back.

He looked down at the kids, who had their eyes half closed. Some even had small drool coming from their mouths as they snored.

They looked up at Jack as he spoke, but they had no strength to say anything.

"The hunters are free to go. Helen, take care of your husband, make sure he doesn’t bite anyone." Jack glared at Luciel from the corner of his eye as he frowned before looking at Melisa.

"And Scarlet, take care of the female one. Try not to kill her while sharing a room."

"Wait wait wait!" Scarlet raised her voice, waking up the kids as she pushed through a crowd, "You want me to share my room with that?!" She asked, pointing at Melisa.

"You are the one who said we should bring them, your responsibility." He shrugged his shoulders, covering his mouth as he yawned.

"Come on kids, let’s go." He started to wake them up and led them towards the big hall to help them find a piece of floor to rest while not allowing Scarlet to say any other word.

"Great." Both Scarlet and Melisa muttered at the same time and crossed their arms before starting at one another.

"Have fun you two." Alex teased them, waving before leaving toward his room to get his sleep.

Inside the church, there were around twenty separate bedrooms that some hunters were using now and nobody complained since without them, they wouldn’t be here today.

"Melisa, hope you survive." Luciel teased her before placing his hand on Helen’s back, "Lead the way, I would like some rest as well."

Melisa growled at Luciel as her eyes flashed for a moment, but she suddenly got serious once she caught a glimpse of Scarlet.

"Great, I need to share my room with a beast." She was giving her a look that could kill at the sudden display of her vampiric nature.

"And I need to be with Ms. Perfect." Melisa puked on the floor, raising her head as she looked away.

"What did you say?" Scarlet asked, unsheating her sword halfway.

"Ms. Perfect, why?" She asked, looking at the silver sword that Scarlet had revealed, "I wouldn’t start a fight if I were you." She warned, making eye contact with the hunter.

"Fine." Scarlet said through her teeth, "Let’s just go." She sheated her sword and turned around, waving with her hand, signaling for Melisa to follow her.

It was the end of the conversation for the two as Melisa started to follow Scarlet since it didn’t seem like she had a choice or a right to complain. Luckily the two stopped to talk, otherwise, they might really try to kill each other.

"We’re here," Scarlet said under her breath, unlocking the door of her room.

Entering, Melisa could see a real mess that was unexpected for someone of Scarlet’s caliber.

There were clothes all around, you could barely see the dark brown, wooden floor.

Swords, other weapons, and gadgets were all around her desk, on the bed, and sticking out from a big, metal chest.

"This is... Nice." Melisa couldn’t take her eyes off the small room, wondering just what kind of tornado passed through.

"Oh please, just say it’s a mess." Scarlet rolled her eyes. She was aware of the state of her dumpster. She wanted to clean it up but didn’t have any energy to do it after spending more than twelve hours on the field each day.

"Fine, it’s like a garbage truck had arrived with weekly trash." She corrected herself and closed the doors behind her, locking them just as Scarlet had instructed.

"Better." Scarlet went to make her bed before taking the pajamas that were on her chair, turning her back towards Melisa while changing.

"If we are already destined to share a room, I have three rules that you must follow." Scarlet started, sitting down on her bed and crossing her legs.

"First, no biting anyone without my permission, understand?" She asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Fine, I guess," Melisa said the last words below her breath so Scarlet couldn’t understand her. No promises about that.

"Second, do not talk to me unless I talk to you first." She ordered, showing a number two with her fingers.

"Don’t worry. I don’t want to talk to you either." Both girls nodded in agreement at this rule, the only reason they still didn’t try to kill each other was because Melisa needed to stay here because Helen and Scarlet didn’t want to put other civilians in danger if a fight was to escalate.

"And lastly, no sleeping on my bed. You get the floor."

"Do I at least get a blanket?" She asked, testing the waters a little, but she didn’t mind a floor with absolutely nothing for the head or to cover herself. It’s just her everyday reality and the nest... Didn’t have the most comfortable beds.

"Fine, you can get the blanket." Scarlet rolled with her eyes before picking up and throwing her a green, thin, but fluffy, blanket.

’Now this is some first-class treatment.’ Melisa caught a blanket with ease and threw it over her shoulders. "Thanks."

Scarlet ignored Melisa and went to lie down, preparing to get some rest.

Seeing no response from Scarlet, Melisa sighed and went to sit down to try and meditate, but she couldn’t get herself to focus.

Opening her eyes which were now wine-red, she glanced at Scarlet. "Hey... Why do you hate us so much?" She asked, wanting to strike up some kind of conversation again.

"Hate?" Scarlet finally said something after a few minutes of silence debating whether she should answer her or not. Barely half an hour passed and Melisa was already breaking a second rule.

"It’s simple. You guys are predators who would slaughter us the moment you would get a chance." Scarlet answered, closing her eyes again.

"Not all of us are like that..." Melisa whispered, looking aside for a moment, "But you know, we just want to live like everyone else."

Hearing the words coming from the female vampire, Scarlet decided to forgive her just this once for speaking to her first and sat up, allowing her to have an audience with her.

"It’s just how it goes. Wouldn’t you also hate and try to get rid of your natural predator?" She asked back, crossing her arms as she stared into Melisa’s red eyes. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

"That’s true..." She mumbled, getting reminded of the werewolves, creatures that feast on their flesh, "But why do you hate vampires so much?"

"Me?" Scarlet placed her hand on top of her chest, moving her head a little backward and slightly widening her eyes.

"I was simply raised as a weapon to fight against them and I want to help the people."

"Is that all?" Melisa asked, raising an eyebrow. Scarlet always seemed to be strong and brave, so it was shocking when she heard that her heart rhythm had changed. It was getting faster with every word she spoke.

"Yes, that’s all." She crossed her arms, giving her a chilling glare that made Melisa unable to ask any further. Remembering her childhood that she spent in the lab gave her the creeps whenever she would remember that place.

"Anyways, your brother. Ginger, short spiky hair, and the same red eyes as yours. Same height. That’s him, right?" It was Scarlet’s turn to ask now and she couldn’t get the similarities between the female vampire and the male one that bit her while she fought against Luciel. And she also wanted to change the topic.

"Kai, you met him?" Melisa raised her head, she never expected to hear Scarlet mentioning him.

"Well... I only met his fangs. Luciel knocked him out soon after and saved my life."

"What do you mean saved your life? Did Kai try to kill you?" Melisa’s voice was filled with shock and disbelief at hearing those words.

"Yes, if it wasn’t for Luciel, I would be dead."

"That doesn’t sound like Kai at all... He never kills his fo- I mean humans." Melisa laughed nervously when Scarlet raised an eyebrow at the moment she was about to say food.

"Are you sure that he wasn’t playing tricks on you and killed people behind your back? You know a saying, never trust a vampire."

"I don’t know who told you that, but vampires are actually more loyal than humans." Melisa frowned, clenching her fist for a moment before relaxing.

"And no, I’m pretty sure he didn’t lie. We are always standing side by side, t-this is the first time that we are separated from each other..." She stuttered, sniffing here and there, she could feel a warm tear rolling down her face.

"How about you tell me about your brother, all right?" For the first time, Scarlet’s voice wasn’t cold, but warm and carrying like that of a loving mother.

Vampires always acted cold and full of themselves, so seeing Melisa displaying human emotions like this made her drop her guard.

"Y-you want to know more about my brother?"

"Yeah, tell me a little bit more about him."

"Okay, just give me a moment..." Melisa replied with a quiet voice, whipping the tears from her eye before starting to speak about her trouble making brother.
