Chapter 162: Dante’s Original Fate

"Dante... I think that’s the 8th one so far..."

"Maybe you should stop—"

"That’s none of your business!"

In the camp, Dante smoked his 8th cigarette in front of Michael, Mira, and Elizabeth. His mask was raised up slightly, only enough to reveal the mouth and nose.

They knew about that herb and the addiction it could cause. In fact, Michael himself was a former addict.

They tried to stop him from smoking it, but his excuse was always "Only one more won’t hurt," and so he continued.

"Anyway, ignore the herb for now." Dante exhaled blue smoke and asked: "Why is no one sending help? Did they abandon you?"

Mira shrugged: "Who knows. I heard that another kingdom might join the war with Uldor and our kingdom is now more concerned about them. Additionally, they already sent some help... just not for us. We can only wait for now."

Dante sighed helplessly. If another kingdom was planning to join the war, it was only normal that the Holy Kingdom would become more cautious with sending their military.

"Well, I have to leave now." Dante finished the cigarette and lowered his mask: "I have to go out for some time."

"Sure."

"Come back soon."

"Stay safe, and stop using that cursed herb!"

Dante waved to them and left the tent. They were already used to him leaving for unknown reasons.

He quickly met the commander and informed him that he was going to leave, then using Shadowstep, he left the camp without anyone noticing.

The moon hung in the sky, causing every place to be a "faint shadow" which was perfect for using Shadowstep.

"Let’s see."

Dante’s voice turned joyful and careless, a tone he developed to give the listener the feeling that he was a complete lunatic, then he started searching for the next victims.

The giants became very low in number now. After months of spreading fear and chaos, they became extremely cautious.

"Where are you people? I’m really bored!"

Even now, as he walked casually in the open and shouted with his loudest tone, no giant attacked him. If that was months ago, the giants who were observing the camps would have attacked him immediately.

After walking for a few seconds, his pace increased. Then he started running, and in a few minutes, he became fast enough to push the wind as he charged forward.

First, he checked the close camps, making sure that the giants weren’t attacking them. In addition to that, he gave them some dead beasts as gifts.

Of course, he couldn’t break his disguise now, so he used a better method to show that he was a lunatic.

He threw them!

He put them in soft bags that could absorb most of the impact, then using all his power, he threw the bags to the camps like cannonballs!

BAM!

"HE’S BACK!"

"FIND COVER AND GET READY TO FIX THE WALLS!"

"DAMN YOU, FOOD THROWER!"

After months of doing that, the people got used to seeing a bag crashing into their tents and walls.

Dante smiled softly and went to the next camp.

BAM!

"WHY MY TENT OF ALL PLACES?!"

BAM!

"I JUST FIXED THAT!"

BAM!

"EVERYTHING IS RED!"

Dante heard every curse and insult as a word of gratitude, and saw every scream and tear as a show of happiness.

Helping starving felt good, didn’t it?

Of course, that wasn’t him trying to get rid of any sense of guilt. The people were truly happy, as the only downside was that they had to clean the mess later.

They didn’t understand why there was a guy helping them that way, so they didn’t know whether he was trying to help them or kill them and failed due to his bad aim.

Whatever, they survived.

And Dante? He enjoyed it!

"HAHAHAHA!"

Although he started all that as a kind of acting, he had to admit that it was a bit fun.

Well, not a bit. It was so fun that he forgot about smoking!

Eventually, he gave food to every single camp he knew about. He felt the urge to go in another round, but he dismissed that thought and shook his head. Giving them so much meat would cause them to rot.

"Well, I should now search for the giants’ hideout." Dante smiled as he began searching for giants.

He didn’t forget his goal of finding the teleportation relic and destroying it.

Unfortunately, even after capturing many giants, he never found the place where they hid. Basically, the giants changed that place regularly, and one of them had an ability to communicate with the giants and tell them about the new place.

That complicated system allowed them to stay hidden from Dante and the others and attack many different camps together. If they had one fixed place where they hid, the camps could have just attacked them together.

Yes, this meant that when the commander wanted to attack the giants, he didn’t really know where they were hiding. It was absolute desperation that gave him such thoughts.

Now that Dante knew about how they didn’t have a real place where they stayed, he was certain that they all, including Elizabeth, would have died.

If he didn’t advance to Rank 2, if he didn’t have the Ring of Greed, or if the camp didn’t have a farmer and had to attack earlier, Elizabeth would have died right in front of Fafnir’s eyes.

That thought irritated him, the fact that Greed’s actions were the reason she survived... the fact that the things he hated and regretted were the main reason he could save her now...

"You’re welcome."

Greed suddenly appeared, sitting casually on Dante’s shoulder while Dante moved in search of giants.

"I didn’t need your help." Dante gritted his teeth: "Did you forget? The World Runes said that I was a genius sorcerer and talented swordmaster. If my life wasn’t affected by you, I could have still become the person I am now."

Greed nodded and admitted: "Yes, you’re right. In fact, one of the reasons I chose you is because you were fated to get something similar to your current Crown of Existence."

Dante’s eyes widened briefly: "Wait, what—"

"If you never interfered with your fate and caused your transmigration..." Greed cut Dante off before he could ask any question: "You’d have killed the loanshark after awakening your innate skill, which is quite similar to the class abilities. Such an incident wouldn’t go unnoticed by the government. They’d find you, feed you, invest in you, be friends with you, and make you one of them and join one of their best forces."

"And soon, you’d have become strong enough to know more of their secrets and get a special Crown of Existence after a few years."

Dante was speechless for a few minutes. He had a feeling that told him Greed wasn’t lying, which only made Dante feel more hatred.

"Don’t look at me like this..." Greed sighed: "In fact, I saved you from becoming a slave for the government and performing horrible acts. Your world is more filthy than you think, boy."

"And what do you know about my world?!" Dante spat with hatred.

"Ohoho, I know a lot of things." Greed stared at the sky thoughtfully, clinging to a memory from the far past: "I visited Earth before, you know, and even knew some people from a specific government. It was a nice corrupted place that inspired me into creating the Greed Bloodline."

"You what?" Dante stopped running and stared at Greed with wide eyes.

Dante knew that Greed likely visited Earth. It was either this or he knew someone from Earth who created that body swap ritual.

But he himself visited Earth himself? And even before creating the bloodline?

"This isn’t possible... wait, was that the stone age?"

But if it was the stone age, then how was he supposed to know about the government? There was nothing like a president caveman, unless he meant a tribe leader.

Was he lying? Did he think that the government system existed thousands of years in the past?

"I know what you’re thinking." Greed laughed: "No, I’m not lying. Didn’t you think that it was strange how some scientists from your modern era named some races who existed thousands of years ago in this world?"

"Yes?" Dante nodded, he didn’t forget about that strange detail.

Suddenly, a theory formed in his mind.

"Wait, was there an apocalypse or something like that which destroyed modern technology and caused humans to start from scratch and spend thousands of years to recover?"

"Completely wrong." Greed shook his head.

Dante frowned: "Is the history I read about completely wrong? No, this feels wrong too... Wait, why are you even telling me this?"

"Because you might need this information very soon."

Dante racked his mind in search of a believable theory, but he couldn’t think of any.

"Nothing is wrong in your world, the problem is here." Greed snapped Dante out of his thoughts and explained: "You know about the Time Aspect, right?"

Dante nodded, letting Greed continue explaining.

"Well, let’s say there were some invaders from another world who attacked us, and back then, our overall strength wasn’t that good."

"So, the best Time Aspect user, alongside a few other aspects, decided to be a heroic fool and sacrifice himself to accelerate the time flow here temporarily."

Dante’s jaw fell as he finally understood what happened.

"Yes, thousands of years have passed here, but only tens of years have passed in your world."

"That time difference allowed this world to stop the invaders despite all the sacrifices and create a separated realm beneath us that blocked the invaders."

"Be-beneath us?!" Another shocking realization hit Dante. He subconsciously lowered his head, looking at the ground.

"Yes, that separate realm is the Abyss!"

"You’ll understand more about it someday. After all, the Abyss is our home! Hehehe!"
