Chapter 72: Saber and Lancer

"Coincidence?"

"Forget it."

"A sword user? I see... It’s been a while since I fought someone like you," said the man.

"I defeated your weak wife. That means I can beat you too!" Agares shouted.

He swung his sword to the side, creating a strong gust of wind around him. Quickly, Agares leapt into the sky to strike the mage.

Leon raised his hand to shield his eyes from the dust. He clearly saw Agares leap up and strike at the lich mage with force.

The Lich Mage realized he couldn’t win in close combat with Agares. That’s why he chose to fly and avoid Agares. Aerial battles were troublesome for Agares.

"Try to land a hit on me! You won’t be able to!" the man shouted.

That’s right! Just as Agares was about to slash his body, he quickly flew back to dodge the attack.

"I knew it. You’re just as much a coward as your wife!"

"No!"

"You’re even worse."

"What did you say?!" the man yelled angrily.

Agares landed back on the ground, taking a few steps forward with his eyes fixed on the lich mage.

"She transformed into a terrifying demon, attacked me, and injured me. Why is your wife braver than you?" Agares taunted.

"You bastard! Did you force her to transform like that?!" the man roared.

"She looked desperate. Isn’t it normal for her to do that?"

"I’LL KILL YOU!"

The lich mage burst into flames of anger and hatred. He flew from the sky to the ground, sending a black slash at Agares—but Agares neutralized it with his sword.

They fought in close range, swinging their weapons at each other. Agares with his sword, and the mage with his staff. Their speed was so fast that even Leon couldn’t follow it.

"W-Who is he really?" Leon asked.

The party’s priest came close to Leon. The woman said she had already healed two of their friends, with help from Aoi. Now, she planned to heal Leon’s wounds.

Leon turned and thanked her, then looked at the white fox still healing Cassandra, the mage in their party and also Leon’s lover.

"Did that fox come with him?"

"Yes. She has a unique ability. Thanks to her, I could heal Nathan and Bernard quickly."

The priest pointed her staff and cast a healing spell on Leon. Slowly, his cuts and bruises disappeared, and his energy recovered by 80%.

"Thank you, Anna."

Anna cleared her throat and nodded. It was her duty to heal the party. Leon turned his eyes back to the front.

The battle between Agares and the male lich mage was still intense.

Parts of the room were destroyed by the explosions from their fight. Agares kept attacking aggressively, and every sword swing blocked the monster’s spells.

"Why do you keep neuralizing my magic?!" the man shouted in frustration.

"Shadepiercer won’t lose against magic."

As the fight went on, the Lich Mage’s mana drained faster, either from failed attacks or defense.

Fatigue started to overwhelm him—his mind blurred, and his legs ached.

Agares noticed everything. Luckily, he had boosted his vitality stat, making him much more durable in long battles without getting tired.

He saw a gap when the monster was about to cast a barrier spell. With a quick side move, Agares swung his sword and slashed the man directly.

A wide diagonal slash appeared across the lich mage’s chest, covering him in black blood as he flew upward to catch a breath.

[+150 dmg]

’A basic attack caused 150 damage to me. This is bad. I can’t keep fighting him up close,’ the man thought.

Even so, Agares had taken a few hits too. But physical attacks from a mage weren’t nearly as deadly as a saber’s strike. They didn’t threaten Agares’s life.

"Good! Very good!"

"No wonder you could defeat my wife alone."

"Then, can you handle this?!" the lich mage shouted.

He chanted a spell non-stop, and his ancient staff floated in front of him, glowing with bright red light upward, forming a massive magic rune that covered nearly the whole area.

From that rune, a crimson rain began to fall. When Agares caught some drops, they felt warm—then hot—on his hand.

No doubt, this was blood acid rain magic. Too much exposure would cause skin to blister and suffer serious damage.

Agares looked back. The mage in Leon’s party was still hurt and couldn’t heal herself. The priest had no defensive spells, and neither did the lancer.

"Damn it!"

He jumped back and called Leon and the priest to retreat. They nodded in understanding.

Agares stopped at the spot where Leon’s party members were lying down. Leon and Anna stood nearby.

"Activate Skill!"

"What? A knight with a Hero Job?!" Leon exclaimed.

"Saber Skill: Abyssal Ward!"

"WHAT? A Saber?!" Leon and Anna gasped.

[Saber Skill: Abyssal Ward Activated]

[-500 Mana]

[Mana: 5150/6950] [-500] fгeewebnovёl.com

Agares stabbed Shadepiercer into the ground, summoning two bat wings that formed a protective dome around him and those nearby.

Aoi saw it, finished healing Cassandra, and jumped back onto Agares’s shoulder.

"What’s going on?" Aoi asked.

"Wait! You can talk?" Anna asked, shocked.

"Hehe, I’ve always been able to talk."

"There’s a blood acid rain spell. I don’t know when it’ll stop," Agares said.

"But since its range is massive, it must be draining a lot of his dark energy."

"For now, we’re safe in here," Agares explained.

[-250 dmg]

[Damage Reduction 60% for 10s]

[ATK Reflection 30%]

"Haha! You can’t beat me!" the lich mage taunted.

Surprisingly, thanks to the ATK Reflection buff, some of the acid rain bounced back and hit the lich mage—even from afar.

Not only did the received damage panel appear, but the dealt damage panel too.

[+75 dmg]

"He’s taking damage," Leon said.

"It’s the 30% ATK Reflection. I’m taking some damage too, but so is he."

"Once he realizes it, he might stop the attack."

"I’ll help you," Anna said.

She cast a light element healing spell on Agares, but it failed to channel—surprising her.

"Why didn’t it work?" Anna asked, shocked.

"It’s useless. Light affinity won’t help me."

Leon and Anna glanced at each other, then nodded. Leon stepped closer to Agares with his spear, knowing what to do.

"You helped us. Let me take down that monster."

"Activate Skill!"

"Lancer Skill: Thousand Spear Thrust!"

Agares turned and gasped. He wasn’t an adventurer, but a knight with a different Hero Job. Even so, he and Leon had different Hero paths.

"You know what to do, right?" Agares asked.

"I do."

"Hurry. My protective dome only lasts 10 seconds."

Leon dashed forward and pointed his spear to the sky, bringing up thousands of golden spears targeting the magic rune above.

The lich mage couldn’t do much—he was out of dark energy.

BLAST!

The rune’s core was destroyed, and the blood acid rain stopped. Agares pulled his sword free, deactivating his second skill.

He walked forward confidently, approaching Leon who was still staring seriously at the lich mage.

"Let’s end this fight!"

"Sure. I’ll help you, Sir."
