Yang Qingxi’s gaze flickered toward the young man walking several meters ahead of them.
He wore a faded T-shirt and cheap jeans, the fabric thinned from countless washes.
His sneakers were scuffed and worn, and his greasy hair clung limply to his scalp. With hunched shoulders and downcast eyes, he moved like someone trying not to be noticed.
Su Mo followed her line of sight. After a glance, he nodded and leaned closer, lowering his voice.
"See him? That’s the textbook definition of an early-stage protagonist."
Yang Qingxi rolled her eyes. "That’s him."
Su Mo stiffened, then snapped his head back toward the man, genuine surprise flashing across his face.
[No way... For real? I was joking when I said he looked like protagonist material. Who knew he’d actually be one?]
Yang Qingxi tugged lightly on his sleeve. "Have an insect follow him."
Su Mo nodded. He extended his spiritual sense, scanning the surroundings. A bee hovered about twenty meters away. Without hesitation, he activated his Insect Cultivation Technique and seized control.
Once the bee latched onto Lin Fan’s trail, the two found an empty bench nearby and sat down.
"Did you get anything?" Su Mo asked.
"A little," Yang Qingxi replied with a sigh. "His name is Lin Fan. He’s a reborn—"
Su Mo listened closely. When she finished, he frowned slightly. "So the system only gave you the basics this time? No full plot summary?"
"Yes," she nodded, her disappointment evident in her tone. "Looks like that was a one-time beginner’s reward."
[What a stingy system. My novice reward was Foundation Building Stage Cultivation. Maybe compared to her system, mine isn’t so bad after all.]
Su Mo complained inwardly while keeping a neutral expression. "Then what now? How do you plan to deal with him?"
Yang Qingxi stared at him silently. If not for the massive gap in strength, she would’ve loved to smack him.
’Do you think I wanted this system? Stop showing off... If I had a choice, I’d switch with you in a heartbeat!’
Suppressing her irritation, she asked coolly, "Aren’t you a transmigrator? Haven’t you read Lin Fan’s story?"
Su Mo looked at her as if she’d asked something ridiculous. "Do you have any idea how many rebirth novels with a protagonist surnamed Lin are out there?"
She shook her head. "Are there many?"
He sighed. "Thousands. Probably more."
"Seriously?" She was genuinely shocked. "Then we can’t rely on the reader’s insight this time."
"So?" Su Mo asked. "What’s your plan?"
Yang Qingxi fell silent for a moment. "We observe him first. Let’s decide later."
"That works. He’ll get his memories in less than an hour, anyway." Su Mo smiled faintly. "We’ll have our answer soon."
---
Lin Fan frowned as the bee continued to hover around him.
He waved his hand several times, his irritation rising, but the bee stubbornly refused to leave. Eventually, he gave up and quickened his pace toward the meeting spot.
"Sister Rui!"
Lin Yaorui turned at the sound of his voice, a gentle, doting smile forming instantly. "Xiao Fan."
But the smile faltered the moment she took in his appearance.
"Why are you dressed like this?" she asked, brows knitting together. "Didn’t you say you started a part-time job?"
As if a terrible thought struck her, her expression darkened. "Don’t tell me that bastard father of yours took your pay?"
"No! No, sister!" Lin Fan hurriedly denied, panic creeping into his voice. "It’s just... a friend. Yeah. A friend needed money urgently, so I lent it to him."
Lin Yaorui’s expression didn’t relax. Her frown deepened instead. "Helping friends is one thing, but not at the expense of your own quality of life."
She paused, studying him carefully. "Or... are they taking advantage of you?"
"She’s not!"
The outburst came too fast and sharp.
"She?" Lin Yaorui raised an eyebrow. "A girl? Did she make you spend all your money on her?"
Upon hearing this, something inside Lin Fan snapped.
"She’s not using me, damn it!" he shouted, his eyes reddening. "Everything I do is my own choice!"
His voice trembled as the bottled-up frustration spilled out.
"Even you, Sister Rui! You’re just like everyone else! Why does no one understand us? She loves me! Spending money on her makes me happy!"
Before Lin Yaorui could respond, he turned around and ran.
"Xiao Fan!" she called after him.
He didn’t stop.
"Stay away from me!" he shouted over his shoulder. "You’re just a half-sister! You have no right to interfere in my personal life!"
Those words hit her like a blade.
’Just a half-sister...’
Lin Yaorui froze, watching his retreating back. A sharp ache bloomed in her chest, her vision blurring as tears welled up.
But she didn’t cry.
She straightened herself, forcing the emotions back down, her expression once again became composed—only her clenched fists betrayed the pain she felt.
Without another word, she turned and left as well.
---
Su Mo, who was receiving the transmitted memories through the bee, wore a complicated expression.
"Did you learn anything?" Yang Qingxi asked eagerly.
"Two things," he replied. "First, you were right. He really is Secretary Lin’s so-called brother."
Yang Qingxi wasn’t surprised. "And?"
"Second," Su Mo said slowly, "he’s a stubborn idiot. Completely obsessed over some woman."
"Go on."
After he explained the situation, Yang Qingxi made her judgment. "From the looks of it... that woman might be using him."
"There’s no ’might’ about it," Su Mo said flatly. "She is using him."
"How can you be so sure?" She
Su Mo shrugged. "Novels’ logic. Okay."
"Ex-girlfriend, cheating girlfriend, one-sided crush, brutal rejection, you can pick any one. At least one of those is guaranteed to be present for a rebirth story."
Yang Qingxi sighed softly. "Make sense."
Then continued. "If we go by that logic. Soon, he is going to experience something shocking. Right?"
"Yeah, and that ’something’ should be the trigger for his memories." Su Mo affirmed.
