The Destructive Adventures of the Lovers-Chapter 48: Creator of Creatures
Chapter 48 - Creator of Creatures
A thick, biting wind whipped through the icy plains of Antartic as Martha, seated upon her towering throne of jagged ice, let out a chilling, triumphant laugh. Her breath fogged the frozen air, echoing through the shattered halls of her castle, twisting around broken pillars and shattered sculptures like ghostly whispers.
"They still run," Martha murmured, her voice sharp as the shards of ice levitating around her. She leaned forward, fingers tightening around the armrests of her throne. "Pathetic."
Far in the distance, Aeiwou and her remaining followers staggered through the endless snow, their breaths coming in harsh, desperate gasps. Their feet sank deep into the powdery drifts, each step a battle against the weight of fear pressing down on them. Aeiwou glanced back, her glowing blue eyes wide with terror as the relentless march of the ice knights closed in, their armor clinking like shattered glass.
"Keep moving!" she screamed, her voice raw with panic. "We must reach the cliffs!" She thrust her hands forward, and a wave of blue magic erupted from her palms, carving a narrow path through the icy terrain. Her followers stumbled after her, their terrified cries swallowed by the rising storm.
But the ice knights did not relent. Their swords sliced through the air with a cold, metallic hum, their frozen bodies grinding against the snow like the grinding teeth of a beast.
Aeiwou snarled, spinning on her heel, her long white hair whipping around her like a storm. She clapped her hands together, and the ground trembled. From the snowdrifts rose towering snow golems, their eyes glowing with the same ghostly blue as their creator's. They lumbered forward, smashing into the line of advancing knights, their massive fists sending shards of ice and metal flying.
For a moment, the air filled with the sound of cracking bones and clashing blades, the screams of the dying swallowed by the wind. Aeiwou watched with grim satisfaction as the knights faltered, their ranks thrown into disarray. But then she felt it—a cold, unrelenting presence creeping into her mind.
"No..." she whispered, turning slowly. Her heart plummeted as she saw the hulking form of the lead snow golem kneeling before the gates of the ice palace. Its glowing eyes locked onto Martha's throne, and with a heavy, creaking groan, it bent one icy knee.
Martha's smile widened, her eyes gleaming with cruel delight. She extended one slender finger, curling it toward the golem. "Come to me."
The golem rose, its massive form shaking the ground as it turned its back on Aeiwou, lumbering toward her and her trembling followers. Panic surged through the mage's veins as she backed away, her feet slipping on the ice.
"No! Fight them! Obey me!" Aeiwou screamed, her magic crackling wildly in the air, but the golem only tightened its massive, icy fists, the blue glow in its eyes now fully replaced by the cold, merciless light of Martha's control.
Up in the tower, Ella peered down from her frosted window, her gaze sharp as the icy wind that whipped at her long, white hair. She stretched out one hand, and snowflakes gathered around her fingers, swirling like a thousand whispered promises. She flung them downward, coating the golem's massive form, strengthening it against the heat of battle, ensuring it would not crumble easily.
Martha rose from her throne, the shards of ice levitating around her back flaring like the wings of a frozen angel. She thrust her arms forward, and the shards shot through the air like arrows, piercing through the lines of Aeiwou's followers. Screams echoed across the frozen wasteland as the shards found their marks, and bodies crumpled into the snow, staining it crimson.
The golem roared, its icy maw opening wide as it tore trees from the frozen ground, hurling them like spears toward the panicked crowd. Wood splintered, ice cracked, and the last echoes of resistance were snuffed out in a wave of bitter cold.
Aeiwou stumbled back, her heart pounding in her ears. She looked around at the shattered remnants of her people, at the blood-soaked snow, and the towering figure of Martha in her icy throne. Her breath caught in her throat, and for a brief, terrible moment, she felt the full weight of her failure.
Martha's laughter cut through the storm like a blade. "Run, Aeiwou. Run while you still can."
The wind howled across the frozen plains, tearing through the shattered remains of the battlefield. Blood-soaked snow crunched beneath Aeiwou's boots as she stumbled away from the ice castle, her breaths coming in ragged gasps. Her magic flickered weakly at her fingertips, the once brilliant blue now dim and unsteady.
Martha watched her from the balcony high above, her icy gaze locked onto the fleeing mage. She stretched out her hand, the air around her crackling as she whispered ancient, bitter words. The shards of ice levitating around her back twisted, growing longer and sharper, their edges glinting like hungry fangs.
"You think you can escape me?" Martha's voice cut through the storm, sharp and cold as the glacier beneath her feet. She raised her arms, and the ground beneath Aeiwou cracked open. From the jagged fissures, monstrous forms began to crawl, their eyes burning with the same ghostly blue as their queen's.
The ice demons emerged, their bodies twisted and sharp, made from the very bones of the glacier. Their jaws hung open, serrated teeth dripping with frost, their claws clicking against the frozen ground as they surged forward, their guttural growls echoing through the icy wasteland.
Aeiwou spun around, eyes wide with horror. She thrust her hands forward, her magic bursting forth in a desperate wave of blue light, striking the nearest demon and shattering its head into a thousand icy shards. But for every demon she destroyed, two more clawed their way up from the frozen earth, their eyes burning with an unholy hunger.
"Go!" she screamed to her remaining followers, her voice raw with terror. "Run! I'll hold them off!"
Some hesitated, casting fearful glances back at the chaotic, blood-soaked battlefield, but others turned and fled, their panicked screams swallowed by the rising storm. Aeiwou gritted her teeth, her eyes blazing as she unleashed another wave of magic, sending a dozen demons crashing into the ice, their limbs splintering like brittle bones.
But it was not enough.
Martha's laughter echoed from the castle's frozen towers, a haunting, bone-chilling sound that seemed to shake the very air. The demons closed in, their claws slicing through Aeiwou's defenses, their jagged teeth snapping at her heels. She stumbled back, her strength failing, her magic fading to a flicker as the icy ground trembled beneath her feet.
"Pitiful," Martha whispered, her voice a frozen breath on the wind. She clenched her fist, and the demons surged forward as one, their claws clamping around Aeiwou's arms, their jaws snapping inches from her face. She struggled, her blue magic crackling weakly around her, but their grip tightened, dragging her to her knees.
"You belong to me now," Martha whispered, her cold, unblinking eyes locking onto Aeiwou's. The ice demons tightened their hold, their breath freezing against the mage's skin, their claws digging deep into her flesh. With a final, chilling whisper, Martha closed her fist, and the demons dragged Aeiwou into the ice, their twisted, frozen forms closing around her like the jaws of a great beast.
High above, Ella watched from her tower window, her icy gaze unblinking as the storm swallowed the battlefield, the last screams of the fallen echoing up through the frozen air.
Far from the castle, Aeiwou's remaining followers huddled together in a makeshift camp, their eyes hollow and their bodies trembling. They clung to one another, their breaths fogging the air, their hearts heavy with the knowledge of their failure.
In the distance, the ice castle loomed, its jagged towers slicing through the storm like the teeth of a great, frozen beast. And deep within its walls, Aeiwou knelt in chains, her breath coming in shallow gasps as the ice demons closed in around her, their icy claws tightening, their hollow, frozen eyes unblinking.
The battle had ended.
The queen had won.
