Chapter 381: The lab’s lone patient

Jia waited outside while Mingshen and Bojing headed into the special room where the woman was kept.

"You didn’t go inside with them?" She blinked at Shilin as she asked.

Shilin shook his head. "I am not allowed to go inside that ward."

"Oh."

"Seems so strange, isn’t it?" He tilted his head. "I never thought there would be an active patient in this lab and that too, for years."

"Well..."

Jia coughed.

What am I supposed to say? I was the guinea organ donor for her.

"I wonder what Boss’s relationship is with that woman. She is not kept in any other hospital but in his own lab. There is nothing about her family either."

Jia held the same questions as him but she had never properly asked Mingshen about her.

Should I ask him? Or is it a secret?

"Who do you think she could be?"

Jia glanced at Shilin’s side, who was staring at the door with a strange, unreadable concentration. She had her own guesses of the woman being some close family friend but then again, it was strange that she had never once seen her family around. Yet for Mingshen to treat her with such special care and attention meant that she was connected to him in some way or that he was somehow indebted to her.

Though I cannot imagine Mingshen being indebted to someone...

Soon after, Mingshen and Bojing stepped out.

"How is she?"

"H-Her heart’s condition is improving sis!" Bojing sparkled.

"Really? That’s great."

He nodded hard. "Boss’s n-new tissue regeneration and healing process is working!"

Tissue regeneration...

"It’s the same research for which he was awarded in London, right?"

"Yes!" He beamed.

Bojing got a smack in return and he burst into tears. "B-Boss?"

"You are sparkling too much," he grimaced.

"Be-Because it’s good news! N-Now we won’t have to b-bug sis for her heart..." he sniffled.

Jia - "..."

They are talking as if I was just supposed to give them candy...

A thought occurred to her when Mingshen’s phone rang and he stepped aside. "Spicy, wait for me, okay? We will have our mushy mushy time in my office soon~"

He hopped away in a merry mood with Jia shaking her head.

Shilin asked, "Does that mean that she will wake up soon?"

Bojing shone. "T-the chances have certainly increased! Pre-previously, her heart was too weak to beat on her own b-but Boss’s experiment on her is w-working! If a-all goes well then, her heart would slowly become s-strong enough that she could come o-out of her coma!"

Jia clapped her hands. "That’s awesome."

"I-It’s all thanks to Boss," he cried. "H-He worked day and night t-to do everything he could s-so that sis Jia could be spared."

Her brow twitched but somewhere in her heart, she felt a strange emotion envelope. Since the beginning, Mingshen had been chasing after her to become the organ donor but somewhere along the way, that focus had slowly been diminishing.

"B-Boss really cares a-about you, sis, t-that’s why he didn’t want you to s-sacrifice yourself anymore," he wiped his eyes.

Not like I was going to sacrifice myself in the first place but...

Thinking back to how Mingshen flew all the way back to Beijing just because of one phone call, she now truly believed that he was seeing her more than a guinea pig now. A light smile lifted her lips unknown to her.

"By the way I wanted to ask...how is that woman connected to Mingshen? I mean, only if you are allowed to. I don’t want Mingshen to chew you."

Bojing chirped. "Boss won’t mind if it’s you, sis! I-It’s twisted but he l-likes you!"

"..."

So you do admit his affection is twisted.

"Her n-name is Mingyu. S-she was one of the voluntary participants of a m-medical research paper which Uncle Cheng was working on a long time back. Generally, everybody o-only stayed at the hospital premises b-but overtime, she became close to Aunt Bingqing a-and frequently visited the Yang mansion too. This was tw-twelve years ago."

"Oh."

Suddenly, Jia noticed Bojing’s expression turning somber for a moment as if some hidden pain lurked beneath his eyes. But it quickly disappeared in a flash and he continued.

"S-She used to spend quite some time in the mansion a-and Uncle and Aunt treated her a-as family too. T-though Boss d-didn’t really like her. T-they were always at odds."

Well...

Jia noticed a strange anxiety in Bojing’s eyes again as if something was bothering him. A streak of fear would reflect in his gaze now and then.

"Is anything wrong?"

He jolted and quickly shook his head. "No, no! S-So as I was saying, she used to visit the mansion a lot but l-later had to leave when Uncle couldn’t continue his research anymore."

"Why not?"

"That..."

Jia immediately said, "It’s okay if it’s something you cannot tell me."

He sighed in relief, but she saw a tinge of mistiness form on his eyelids.

"That was it then. A-All participants left abruptly but they were compensated. That’s how we k-know her. We thought we would never s-see her again but I’m fact Boss did t-two years ago when she s-saved him from an assassination attempt."

Jia’s eyes widened. "Mingshen’s assassination?"

He sniffled. "Y-Yes. Boss had cr-cracked down on a huge illegal ring of a harmful drug chain who were operating under the name of the u-underworld. In re-retaliation, some pl-planned an ambush and shot a bullet at him outside the hospital.

B-But by coincidence, Mingyu was present there too a-and she stepped in the l-line of fire! The bullet was lodged in the corner of her heart. T-Thankfully, it happened just outside the hospital so she w-was admitted right away and B-Boss operated on her. But still it had damaged an important a-artery and she s-slipped into a coma..."

He said, "She was kept in the main h-hospital for some time but Boss brought her in his l-lab soon after to closely monitor her himself. She needed a heart b-but because of her unique position like yours, w-we couldn’t get such an organ donor.

Boss kept her on life support and c-continued with his research. Then he met y-you and thought that our problem would be solved. But then he t-took it upon himself to find another way to heal her heart instead of you. He had said, ’I won’t let Spicy be an organ donor anymore!’"
