Chapter 403: Father daughter time

Xie Zi Han placed the empty glass that was filled with scotch until a moment ago. A pair of arms wrapped around his neck from the back and a chirpy voice came. "Dad~"

"Heyyy, there’s my daughter who doesn’t get time for her old man anymore," He complained with a pout.

"What do you mean? I always take out so much time for you," Mulan pouted.

Xie Zi Han snorted. "Don’t give me that look. You cannot weasel your way out of this. When’s the last time we have properly talked?"

"Dad, I have a company to run. If you have forgotten, then let me remind you that your proud daughter is a CEO."

"Doesn’t mean you get to ignore your old man..." he grumbled.

Mulan let out a sigh and dropped a big gift box in front of him. Xie Zi Han’s eyes sparkled. "A present!"

She smiled. "Your eyes always sparkle like that when I bring you presents."

As he unwrapped the present, his hands paused for a moment. He stared at the shining gift wrapper and let out a smile, thinking about the past.

"I didn’t have much pleasure to ever receive presents."

He caught Mulan staring at him and he quickly cleared his throat. "I mean, it’s nothing to be sentimental about. You know how my life has been. My family wasn’t so well-to-do. We had to save every bit of penny we could. Sending me to London to study was enough of a burden to my family."

"You didn’t need to live that kind of a life, did you?"

"What do you mean?"

She said after a pause, "I mean you worked so hard and got into such a prestigious university in London. You could have made an awesome doctor. Like Uncle Cheng."

He smiled. "It wasn’t meant to be dear. Medicine wasn’t the answer to my life."

Xie Zi Han gasped as he opened the present. "Oh my God, it’s a record of that famous jazz music I liked! How did you get this? In your age of smartphones, these beauties hardly exist."

Mulan smirked. "Who do you think your daughter is?"

"Hehe, you are the best! You know, I still have that record player I kept somewhere. It could be dusty but it will definitely work~"

"Tell me if it doesn’t work. I will get it fixed," she then leaned and said, "Medicine wasn’t the answer to your life but real estate was?"

He chuckled. "Hey, real estate is not that boring. You kids won’t understand."

"What I understand is that you could have had a lot much more in your life, Dad. But you threw it away."

A strange glint flickered in Xie Xi Han’s eyes. "Aish. I understand it’s disappointing for you to live with the fact that I couldn’t pursue medicine."

Her eyes locked into his. "I feel disappointed that you lost what you deserved because you couldn’t pursue medicine."

Xie Zi Han tilted his head. "What do you mean?"

She let out a chuckle and kissed his cheek. "Doesn’t matter, Dad. Because I will give you everything that you rightly deserve."

He pouted. "What I deserve is my daughter’s time which you either spend at your company or at the Yang villa. How many times should I tell you that I don’t like you spending your time there?"

"Better call out the name, Yang Mingshen."

"He is a brat and he doesn’t deserve you," he snorted. "I will never allow for this relationship!"

"But I like himmmm," she mirrored his pout.

"What do you like about him?" He gasped. "I can get the finest guy lined up for you! It will be the longest queue of handsome eligible bachelors you will ever see!"

"Yang Mingshen tops the list of handsome eligible bachelors for me," her eyes twinkled.

Xie Zi Han sighed. "I’m being serious Lanlan. Plus, you even know that Mingshen is interested in Song Jia."

"No, he isn’t," she shrugged. "He just likes to mess around with her."

"Those are generally the first signs of interest in the opposite sex. Haven’t you heard? You tend to bully the person you like at times."

"They are just colleagues, Dad."

"Yang Bingqing is sure as hell made up her mind to make her her daughter-in-law. And I as never hell would let you be an option. Just...let it go, Lanlan. Yang family isn’t the one for you."

Mulan smiled. "It’s exactly the one for me, Dad. I’m not giving up on Mingshen. Plus, Uncle Cheng likes me~"

Xie Zi Han pressed his brows. There were a lot of complications he didn’t want to explain to his daughter.

"He won’t go against Mingshen’s wishes. If he doesn’t want it, Cheng wouldn’t force him. And yes, he likes you. But he is head over heels in love with his wife. Whatever she goes anyway. Not like anybody could beat her commands, haha."

Mulan stared. "Looks like you know them too well."

Xie Zi Han slightly coughed. "I mean yeah...they had some real estate problems long back and I helped them out. We go way back."

"Is that so?"

"A-Anyway, what’s new at your side? Enough about this wrinkly old man."

"I have been invited to the House Tengqi’s engagement."

Xie Zi Han paused and looked at her. "That lad is finally getting married?"

"Was about to happen someday," she shrugged. "So will you come with me? The Yang family will be there too."

His eyes widened. "Cheng agreed?"

"What do you mean?"

He coughed. "I mean nothing. Anyway, I cannot be there."

"Whyyyyy?" She whined. "You have to come with me. You complain I don’t get the time for you and now when we can enjoy a function together, you are rejecting me."

Xie Zi Han cleared his throat. "I’m sorry dear. You know I don’t like social events that much." 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

"It’s just one evening, Dad. I promise I won’t let anyone bother you about real estate deals and stuff."

He hesitated. He had always kept a very low profile ever since he became ’Xie Zi Han.’ He chose to ignore participating in public events where he never knew who might turn out to have a God damn good memory of who was supposed to be who.

And with Yang Cheng also present?

That was a big risk he wasn’t willing to take. Yes, years had gone by and their lives were pretty much settled and stable but one thing he had learned from working under his former Boss, Yang Bingqing, was that never say never.
