Chapter 408: Ulterior motives

Beiye held her brother’s hands, who lay unconscious on the hospital bed. Though fluids were fed to him to keep him stable, he had become too thin and frail for Beiye’s taste.

"You wouldn’t be able to do an arm-wrestling match with me. Look at your arms. I will break your bones in no time."

The young teen brother, Li Bao, remained silent. Only the sound of beeping monitors echoed in the room. One of the nurses dropped by to check his vitals and left them alone.

"You are not playing any games after your sorry mind wakes up. You will be dead if I see you play even the g of a game for the rest of your life. And you will be my slave for the rest of your life because I have literally entered the lion’s den for you. Or should I say the lioness’s...You better express your gratitude and respect once you open your damn eyes. You are taking so long..."

Beiye sighed, leaning her neck at the back of the chair. Her eyes stared up at the white ceiling in a daze. When she closed her eyes for a moment and opened them again, a different view greeted her this time instead of the bland wall.

"Oh my, are you leaning to kiss me? Wait, let me close my eyes again."

Huojin’s brow twitched and he flicked on her forehead. "You should go back home if you are so tired."

Her eyes opened and she frowned. "No kiss?"

"Go back home."

"Are you not comfortable with romance? I’m sure you would have had many girlfriends."

"What is many? You speak like I’m some playboy. And yes, I like romance. And no, not your flirting."

"You are being very stubborn, you know."

He smiled. "I can say the same for you."

He dragged a chair beside hers and glanced at Bao. "Is there any change?"

"I would have come running to your arms if there had been."

His eyes narrowed and at that signal, she stopped her mischievousness with a click of her tongue.

"Dr. Yang is testing out his new treatment on him. Tissue...regeneration or something? He explained it. I forgot. But there’s hope for his brain cells to kinda reset if it works. Yes, it will take time. It’s kinda still experimental."

"I know it will work. I won’t comment about anything else about his personality, but he is damn good at what he does. Medicine. He is your sureshot bet."

Beiye stared at him. Her heart was rattled with the one-in-a thousand chance of her brother not ever waking up. But Huojin’s spell of confidence felt like a fresh air of rejuvenation.

"How are things at Quantum Games side?"

She smiled. "People are just very jealous that I grew so close to the CEO in such a short amount of time. But they are just a bunch of idiots. Who would ever want to willingly cajole with snakes? The snake is so happy that my new algorithms got her good investors. It’s gonna be a fun conversation between them and the snake."

"You make it sound like you are treating it as a pet."

"With caution, of course~ Zexi has been a great help too."

Huojin took out a file and handed it to her. "This is what I found based on your list of gamer accounts actively playing Survival Games."

Beiye took a look and clenched the file between her fingers.

"It’s not just my brother..."

"Yup. Their medical cases are being expertly pressed into the background as if it has nothing to do with the game."

Beiye’s eyes shone with a glint of danger and hiss as if she had taken over the role of the snake, its jaw opening wide to get a hold of its prey for a vicious and deadly bite.

How many young minds had fallen prey to a dark game that snatched their life from them?

Instead of studying for their bright futures, they were lying in a hospital bed, fighting for their life.

Beiye slowly closed the file and looked at Bao. Within his silence, she could hear the silence of many more just like him. And the cries of many more families just like her worried sick for their child.

"Trust Mingshen. He will wake up one day," Huojin softly said, adjusting the blanket near Bao’s feet.

He then smiled. "Don’t think about his current state. Hmm, tell me what you will do once he is all fit and fine?"

Beiye threw a glance at his side. "Punch him in the gut."

"..."

The corner of his mouth twitched heavily. "He would have just recovered."

"And I will send him straight to hell if he doesn’t start being a responsible brother, who will follow every command I give him."

"Your control would only drive him away from you."

"My oversight was what brought him to this state in the first place."

A beat of silence ensued.

"I believe he would realize the lesson by himself. We will only push them further apart from us if we get overly interfering with their life as their elder siblings. I have a younger sister. Ask me. Just one question about a pajama night with her girlfriends brings her to the threshold of blocking my number for good."

Beiye arched her brow. She scooted her chair closer to him. "Right, you have a sister. When can I meet her?"

His brows furrowed. "Why do you want to meet her?"

She blinked twice. "We are around the same age, right? I think it would be nice."

"Why do I feel ulterior motives in that question?"

"What ulterior motives would I have?"

"Judging by how your chair is creeping closer and closer to mine, I would say, many."

"The lack of your trust in me hurts my heart."

"You haven’t acted so pure sunshine either for me to trust you."

She frowned. "What’s the problem if there might be some not-so-innocent feelings between us?"

Huojin smiled and tapped her forehead with the file. "Good night. Don’t be awake for too long."

As she watched him leave, she murmured. "You won’t be able to run away for too long..."
