Chapter 44: I did not ask for your help

Shiiing!

It wasn’t until my sword severed his head, that I felt relieved.

"Tsk!" I flicked the blood off my sword.

’That was rather easier than I expected.’ I had thought the bastard would actually put up a fight.

I looked towards the other fights. The heretics Delilah was shooting at had somewhat reduced, while the heretic Rose was fighting kept teleporting at the last moment.

The reflection I had made just less than a minute ago swapped with the one still back at the inn.

Delilah was doing quite fine by herself, so I decided I would assist Fabian, while my buffed reflection would support Rose. I couldn’t have any of the main characters die here now could I?

At first I only wanted to watch, after all, they did survive in the novel. But then again, this wasn’t the novel, this was reality, anything could go wrong. In the novel the heretics didn’t launch an assassination tactic and try to unalive the main casts in the middle of the night.

"Fuck this shit!" I cursed. It was my interference that led to this situation. That was why I didn’t want to interfere in the first place. I should have just minded my business and did what brought me to the city.

And now if any of the main characters died due to me, the plotline was screwed.

"Aisssh!"

---------

In the distance, Fabian’s body defltly and skilfully moved in-between the several heretics surrounding him.

His skin had turned purple, with white lines running along his arms and chest. It was an effect of his ability. In this state, he could choose to decay anything that is in contact with his purple skin.

But that was where the problem lied, if he was fighting only one or two of these heretics, they would have been long dead. But because there were at least seven of them, he couldn’t get the chance to forcefully grab even one.

At every swing, the image of his halberd blurred as it coursed through the air in a lightning fast manner.

It was so fast, that the afterimage of the halberd lingered in the air for a split second.

Clank! Clank!

"Damn it!" Fabian cursed, summoning his status screen.

He had really came a long way since awakening, it ignited his fury that a bunch of low lives could be pushing him this hard.

He had been dealing damage to the bastards, but they were healing even faster. And it was as if they were getting better at predicting his moves, seeing as they made sure not to give him any chance to aim for their head.

"Third art: Tempest wheel." He made a full body spin, and made a wide sweeping horizontal arc.

Swish!

A wide arc of silver light emerged in the from the arc he traced, splitting the torsos of three heretics in two. The others that he hadn’t got hurriedly jumped back at that sight, eyes widened in fear.

Fabian glanced wearily at the three that had fallen. They were still alive, even though he’d cleanly splitted them in two, the two severed parts were trying to rejoin themselves.

Just when he was about to move to finish them however....

Shiiing! Shiiing! Shiiing!

Three crimson slashes, each aimed for the for the necks of the three downed heretics, struck true with a burning hiss.

Fabian turned to where the slashes had appeared from, only to see a jet black haired individual running towards him with a smug smile plastered on his face.

In less than two seconds the figure reached Fabian.

"Tsk, don’t interfere." Fabian grumbled. For some reason, the smug smile on Damon’s face made his lips twitch in irritation.

Fabian had never liked Damon. In his eyes, Damon was one of the most pathetic people he’d ever seen. ’Why bother with low lives?’ Fabian had thought. If you wanted to prove yourself, you should compete with people of your status.

-------------

***Damon’s POV***

’Its better I just ignore him’ I thought. I wouldn’t put it past Fabian to leave the heretics and attack me.

An arrogant prick with an overinflated ego, that was who Fabian Ashton was. In the novel, it was only when he got defeated by Alistair during the midterms that he started to realize that the world did not revolve around him.

I ignored him and turned my gaze to the heretics.

Out of the remaining four heretics that backed up, I instantly bolted towards the two closest to me and left the remaining two for Fabian.

I swung my sword at one, and kicked at the other. Both blocked my attacks, but before they could counter attack, I twisted my heel and jumped backwards.

One was using a dagger, and the other, a sword. What followed, was a clash of steels.

"First art: Blooming spiring." The first chance I got, my sword slashed upwards at the one with a dagger. But the one with the sword intercepted it with a sword technique of his own.

Clang!!!!

Without giving him a moment to react, my leg snapped to the groin of the one with the sword in a mortifying crack.

"Aaaargh!" he collapsed to his knees. That’s right, I wasn’t afraid to play dirty. If Fabian had been playing dirty since the beginning, he would have no doubt been done with these fools. But no, his pride wouldn’t let him.

Swish! My sword clipped off his head. It was still terrifying how I’d gone from not killing even cockroaches, to becoming so accustomed to killing.

Alright that was lie, I have killed more cockroaches than I could count, but still.

I watched as the second heretic tensed in fear.

"Come." I beckoned.

----------

On the side of Rose and the teleporting heretic meanwhile, I watched their fight for some time, trying to make sense of the man’s habits, and memorizing his teleportation patterns.

With around 180 percent of my strength, I definitely had better stats than Rose, so it was going to be easier for me to catch him. I just had to hope Rose didn’t destroy me before I did that.

The moment Rose sent a stream of golden flames at him, I tensed, poising my sword for a lethal strike, then shot at a completely different direction where I predicted he would appear after he dodged her attack.

True to my expectations, his figure warped there just as I also reached there.

’Bingo.’ I thought, as my sword clashed with his chest. But instead of what I expected, his figure disappeared right after.

He appeared at a distance away, with a huge gash on his chest, but he was relatively fine, in fact the wound was already healing.

A smirk played on his lips as his eyes flashed between rose and I.

"Calling for big brother to come save you huh?" He grinned. Anyone with half a brain cell could tell Rose and I were related with but a glance, so I wasn’t surprised.

Though, he shouldn’t have said that. Rose’s expression twisted, and the next moment,

BOOOOM!

Golden flames exploded in all directions. The very atmosphere coiled from the heat that her flames released.

"Shit!" I cursed, quickly flickering back. This girl was crazy I tell you.

"Are you crazy?! You could have killed me!" I turned to her after the flames died down.

"I did not ask for your help." she all but growled at me. "You were the one who decided to butt in unannounced."

’This little shit...’ Butt in unannounced? She could clearly see me yet still unleashed the flames. If I didn’t know better, I’d say she was trying to kill me.

I scoffed.

"Oh shut up. You couldn’t do anything about him this whole time, he just keeps teleporting away at the last moment."

I then frowned.

"Besides, they tried to assassinate me too, so I also have a bone to pick with them."

"Having a sibling scuffle are we?" A voice stirred from within the smoke which soon cleared to reveal a relatively unharmed figure.

’Of course he’s unscathed.’ I thought grimly. If I could escape the flames’ reach, how could he not do the same.

The man wasn’t particularly strong, but was rather a nuisance. Since I got here the only thing he had done was run away from Rose, throw a taunt, and disappear again. From the looks of things I could tell the result wouldn’t be pretty if Rose managed to catch him.

"Hold on dear sister, you’re acting impulsive." I called out.

She turned to me.

"Stop calling me that." she hissed.

"I just wanted to tell you to....."

Clang! I swiftly shifted my sword to the side in a parry. The bastard attacked me. Of course, he couldn’t get close to Rose, but there was nothing stopping him from getting close to me.

"Tsk, don’t you know attacking someone who isn’t ready isn’t proper by anime standards?" I clicked my tongue.
