As soon as she uttered the words “private elopement,” Zhang Dalang’s face flushed a bit with redness, his eyes flickered with a touch of panic, but he nodded with nervous resolve, “Da Ya!
Let’s leave Taiping Town together…”
Pei Qin didn’t wait for him to finish, lifting her leg and giving him a kick, “To hell with your damned elopement!”
Zhang Dalang completely did not expect her to suddenly kick him, and he fell to the ground, looking at Pei Qin in disbelief, “…Da…
Da Ya…”
“As a wife when betrothed, as a concubine when eloped.
I’ve made it clear to you before, I wouldn’t agree to marry you even if you asked, so where do you get the gall to think I’d run off with you!?” If it weren’t for the fact that Zhang Dalang hadn’t become completely despicable yet, Pei Qin would have definitely spat in his face.
Upon hearing this, Zhang Dalang was deeply stricken, “Da Ya!
You…”
“What ‘you you’!
Go back where you came from!
Don’t delay me from chopping wood!” Pei Qin had come out today intent on hiding firewood to sell for money.
Zhang Dalang’s face went pale as he picked himself up, still reluctant to believe that Pei Qin had changed to this extent, that she would actually kick him and tell him to get lost.
He had made such a big decision to decide to elope with her, to marry her, but now she had turned out like this.
Seeing him not leaving, Pei Qin frowned with displeasure, taking her cloth bag and ax, changing her location.
Zhang Dalang felt his heart grow cold.
He had made such a firm decision to leave his family behind and elope with her, yet after making such a sacrifice, she treated him like this!
Seeing her without a hint of regret, not even a pained expression as she took her ax and moved to a new spot, Zhang Dalang left the mountain, utterly dejected.
Finally free from disturbance, Pei Qin cut two large bundles of firewood, tying them up with rattan and hiding them amongst a pile of rocks and weeds.
After a short rest, she cut another bundle and tied it up with the rope she had brought from home.
Heading down the mountain, she collected leaves along the way and wrapped them in the cloth bag.
Seeing the sun setting, she quickened her pace, carrying the load down the mountain to return home.
Back home, dinner was ready and there was a portion for her, but Old Pei, Lady Zhu, and Lady Chen were all wearing grim expressions, as if they were waiting to confront her.
Lady Fang’s face was full of worry, hesitating to speak.
“Elder sister…” San Ya barely got the word out before being silenced by a cold glare from Lady Chen.
“What’s all this?” Pei Qin narrowed her eyes.
Lady Fang approached to help her with the firewood on her back, but Lady Zhu yelled, “Stop right there!” and directly ordered Pei Qin, “You only collected so little firewood after being out all afternoon!?
Take it to the back yard!” With that, she got up and followed Pei Qin out.
Pei Qin thought she was just being monitored while working and, without further ado, not thinking much about it and waiting for dinner, she carried the firewood to the backyard.
Behind Old Pei’s house, close to the back building, there was a firewood shed used to store timber.
Since Pei Laoda was a carpenter, the firewood for the family was kept in an outside shed, and the firewood shed had more timber and scattered wood blocks, semi-finished bits and such.
Lady Zhu opened the door, pointing inside, “Pile the leaves outside, and put the dry firewood into this hut!”
Pei Qin glanced at the other dry firewood also in the shed, puzzled, “If the firewood in the hut is dried, shouldn’t it be kept outside to stay dry?”
“You’ll do as I say!

If I tell you to put it somewhere, you put it there, simple as that!
Why so much talk?!” Lady Zhu snapped with displeasure.
Pei Qin rolled her eyes and carried the firewood into the hut.
Lady Zhu hurriedly came forward, quickly closing the door and clicking the lock shut.
Pei Qin came to her senses only to find herself locked in the firewood shed, “Damn it!
What the hell are you doing!?”
Now that the door was locked, Lady Zhu finally erupted with unrestrained taunting, “You lowly girl!
A shameless little wench with no respect for womanly virtue!
Gallivanting with men outside and even planning to elope, let’s see if I don’t deal with you this time!
You little harlot!”
Pei Qin’s expression darkened instantly, flames blazing in her eyes.
Damn Zhang Dayun, ruining her reputation because she wouldn’t elope with him!
