The Evil God Summoned by the Saintess-Chapter 39 - 37: Installing a Backdoor in the Summoning Array
Hilia walked out of the Divine Hall with an ugly expression on her face.
She really couldn’t understand why the High Priest of Snow Fir Divine Hall acted like he was obsessed with money. This was a duty mandated by the Holy Court, but he still demanded a gold coin before he’d act.
His explanation was clever: he was very busy, he couldn’t spare the time—unless Hilia donated a gold coin to the Divine Hall. With that coin, he could do something for her in her stead and then find the time to go with her.
Otherwise, Hilia would have to bring the pollutants to him; he’d purify them for free, just like he’d purified Duke’s bracelet for free—but each meeting cost two silver coins.
He could purify only one item each time, otherwise, he’d "get overwhelmed."
"Lord Rose, why did you stop me from complaining to the Holy Court?" Hilia asked, puzzled.
The young girl thought she already had the evidence recorded; she could just contact the Huijin City Holy Court right in front of the High Priest. She even had Priest Vasily from the Judgement Court on her contact list. It was convenient to get in touch with her bracelet.
But Rose stopped her.
"This High Priest is Tier Three. You think you can report him to the Holy Court right under his nose?"
Hilia was silent.
Obviously, that was impossible.
Hilia might not know the gap between Tier One and Tier Three, but she certainly knew the difference between Tier One and Tier Two.
Triggering the bracelet required magic power input; these little tricks could never escape the High Priest’s notice.
Unless, like when she first used the Yesterday Reappearance Skill, she set up the contact before entering the room and kept the link open when she went in—only then could she avoid detection.
"You’ve seen what you needed to see. Let’s go deal with all the trouble next," Rose said with a grin.
"What do you mean?" Hilia meowed in confusion.
"Let’s head back to Beia Village. I’ll explain on the way."
"Oh..."
Hilia left Xue Shan Town, heading toward Beia Village.
Once they were far from Xue Shan Town, Rose finally said, "I have a way to purify the pollution that’s more efficient than Holy Words. There’s no need to contact the teachers at school to come over."
Hilia, who was just about to contact Ms. Alina, froze for a second. A look of grievance instantly appeared on her face. "Why didn’t you say so earlier?"
"Wanted you to experience a little setback," Rose replied with a squinty-eyed smile.
Hilia: "..."
Thank you, Lord Evil God. I’ve experienced it now. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
"As for the heretics and the Summoning Array, I’ll tell you how to handle those once we get there," Rose continued.
Hilia: "..."
"Once we’re done, contact the school or the Holy Court. Tell them about the Sea Successor White Whale Summoning Array, and let them take care of it."
"Can’t I contact them now?" Hilia asked.
"You could, but then you wouldn’t get to eat fish fins."
"It’s not like I absolutely have to eat fish fins..." Hilia muttered under her breath.
"Do you still want to become a Holy Daughter?"
"Of course I do."
Rose didn’t say anything, just shook his head.
This girl still wasn’t under enough pressure.
She needed to feel the pressure to be motivated to improve her strength.
And just meditating every day isn’t enough to level up. No system buffs, only eating! Eat, eat, and eat!
What genius wasn’t raised by feeding them well?
After thinking for a moment, Rose said, "Go ahead and contact the school."
"Eh? Really? You want me to contact them?"
"Didn’t you want to? But now, when I say you can, you’re not happy?"
"Actually, I do kind of want the fish fins too, hehe..."
"No worries, it won’t interfere. By the time they arrive, we’ll be done here."
...
Snow Fir Divine Hall.
The High Priest was receiving a noble who needed to confess.
This was his main source of income.
The noble presented him with a generous gift: a mithril breastplate worth ten gold coins.
"Thank you, High Priest, for helping us get rid of those damned heretics. This is a small offering to the Holy Court. May it bring you safety and warmth."
"How thoughtful; the Gods will be very pleased."
The High Priest accepted the mithril breastplate. It wasn’t of much use to him, but he could sell it for money.
After some friendly small talk with the noble, the High Priest personally saw him out. Looking at the mithril breastplate, he couldn’t help but sigh.
Ten gold coins, just for helping a noble catch some "heretic" who’d offended him, passing down a verdict, and then handing the person over to the noble’s Judgement, and he got it easily.
"It’s hard to imagine—I hold such an important position, and I once worked an entire year for a single gold coin."
As for what happened to that "heretic" afterward, nobody cared.
Staring at the mithril breastplate, the High Priest suddenly thought of that pretty little girl from before.
"I think people from that place have come to ask for help before."
The High Priest frowned, feeling a vague sense of unease.
If heretics operated in his territory and he did nothing, and the Holy Court found out...
"I remember it was some backwater little village..."
A remote village—even if it was buried by a landslide, people might not find out for years.
A cold glint flashed in the High Priest’s eyes.
"Maybe it’s already become a Sect stronghold!"
He summoned an Assistant Priest. "Go notify the Knight Order. We’ve discovered a heretic base. Come with me to wipe them out."
...
After flying at full speed for a while, Hilia returned to Beia Village.
At that moment, quite a few villagers were already gathered outside the house where all the pollutants were stored. Marina and the village chief were leading people to keep order.
When she saw Hilia land, Marina said, "Sorry, Miss Xilia. There’s too much pollution stored here—when passing villagers noticed something was off, they all showed up to check it out."
She was embarrassed. "To stop people from going in, I asked the chief to bring folks over to block the way. In the end, it just made even more people curious about what’s going on here."
"Just tell everyone the truth, and ask them not to crowd around," Hilia said.
"Okay."
"I’m heading over to Lake Beia. I’ll leave things here to you for now," Hilia added.
"Leave it to me!"
Hilia bid farewell to Marina and flew toward Lake Beia with the Magic Puppet.
"Lord Rose, why aren’t we purifying the pollutants first?"
"Those things aren’t going anywhere, but the White Whale can get away. Before the school teachers arrive, we need to set up what we need."
Hilia checked her bag. There was only dry food, some magic materials, and a basic toolkit for repairing Magic Puppets.
"I don’t think I brought anything useful."
"Just use local materials," Rose said.
"..."
Soon, the girl and puppet arrived at the shore of Lake Beia.
The traces of Jack’s fish-slaying spree from last night had already been cleaned up by him. It was completely quiet now.
Hilia and the Rose-controlled Magic Puppet split up to search around Lake Beia. After a while, they dug up several nearly-drained magic stones.
"Are these the magic stones the Summoning Array left behind?"
"Yeah, they’re useless now."
As Rose replied to Hilia, he began carving strange rune patterns onto one of the magic stones.
Luckily, there was a carving knife in the Magic Puppet repair kit.
Unlike Hilia’s slow, hesitant engraving, Rose worked fast. Soon, he’d finished all the stones; the once-dim magic stones flickered with renewed light, and their magic energy fluctuated again.
"Just put these magic stones back where you found them," Rose said, passing the stones Hilia had handed over earlier back to her.
"Will this stop the Deep Sea Mutual Aid Association from summoning the Sea Successor White Whale?"
"No, I’m installing a backdoor into their Summoning Array."
