Chapter 47: Two Weeks

The cold air of the forest entered his lungs, carrying the scent of damp earth. The silence that followed the battle with the bear was absolute.

Broken only by the distant sound of leaves being moved by the wind.

He felt different.

After his soul had been strengthened due to the bloodline of the Nhamara flowers, using the Shackles of the False Genocider no longer weighed so heavily on his mind. The feeling of exhaustion had completely disappeared.

Furthermore, upon absorbing the beast’s energy, he recovered everything he had spent. The fallen energy, which protected the inner part of his body during the beasts’ attacks that reverberated through him.

The fatigue in his eyes and muscles had also been washed away. His entire body was restored from the inside out.

He then focused on his dantian and noticed the flow of fallen energy moving in perfect harmony, his foundation was without any blockage.

He hadn’t faced any bottlenecks so far, nor did he feel that he would. No sign of instability. Even after breaking through stages so quickly, his base remained solid.

This was due to the fallen energy, but mainly because his soul was far beyond his realm. It had long surpassed the limits of his cultivation stage.

But even so, something bothered him.

He remembered the fight.

Against that bear, whose strength could be compared to the early stages of the Qi Liberation Realm, he was still behind. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

His chains, though his main ability, were not invincible.

The Veil of Blindness, despite turning the tide of battle, demanded too much from his eyes when used on those with far superior cultivation. And perhaps it wouldn’t even have any effect on someone stronger.

"Even with all this power... there are still limits." He murmured.

His gaze fell upon the chains, now motionless, wrapped in gray mist.

Those fallen abilities, which had seemed absolute when he first received them, were now beginning to show their restrictions.

Then, he realized something. Something that now bothered him more than any flaw in battle.

His power seemed to be increasing due to his cultivation, his physical strength, his perception, his body. But his abilities... were not.

Frowning, he asked the system in a low voice.

"System. I’m breaking through stages, but I don’t feel my abilities evolving or increasing in power."

"The only one that truly evolved was the Shackles of the False Genocider, and that only happened when... I had that vision."

He thought he might not get a response again, but to his surprise.

Ding!

[The abilities of Fallen Bloodlines do not evolve according to the host’s cultivation.]

The answer was simple and direct, making Cairen furrow his brows.

"You’re saying then that they’ll always have the same strength? You mean they’ll become useless when I get stronger?"

[Yes. That’s why it is recommended that the host complete new missions to obtain more powerful bloodlines.]

For a moment, he stood still. His gaze darkened, the calm expression giving way to a flicker of frustration.

"So that’s how it is. I need to collect the bloodlines as if they were steps."

It was irritating. But at the same time... fascinating. It seemed there would be no limit to how many bloodlines he could receive. And with each new bloodline, he would become much stronger than just cultivating alone.

"But despite that... personal strength, beyond the bloodlines, is necessary, or I might die from my own abilities if my body can’t withstand them." Cairen, he murmured.

He let out a low sigh and calmed himself.

"All right. As long as they work, that’s enough."

For now, his abilities were still devastating to anyone within the Qi Accumulation Realm.

Few at that level could even react.

And even against cultivators in the Qi Liberation Realm, he still had the ability from the Nhamara bloodline.

He didn’t know the true extent of that ability’s power, but he knew the strength of his soul, which had been absurdly reinforced by the bloodline.

It was obvious that those from lower realms would have no strength to resist an ability of such magnitude, granted by a second-grade bloodline.

"And soon... I’ll obtain more of them. So I don’t need to worry too much yet."

The decision was simple. Keep hunting. Use the remaining days to strengthen his foundation and test his abilities further.

Thus, he moved through the forest once more.

Three days passed, and when the last dawn came, the mist surrounding him seemed somehow lighter.

His body had already grown accustomed to living in that place, but this would be his last day there. The two weeks had passed.

Cairen stopped walking. Through the bond, he sensed Yanyu’s direction and began to follow it. Her presence was vivid and firm, like a beacon pointing the way.

Hours of walking later, he found her.

Yanyu stood atop a pile of beast corpses of all shapes and sizes. Her body was covered in blood up to her knees, and yet, the smile on her face was serene.

A truly satisfied smile.

The smell of iron and death filled the surrounding air.

The ground, once covered in green moss, was now painted crimson.

Ling still couldn’t see him through the mist, but she felt his approach through the bond. And that’s why she stood there, waiting.

Her tone then became light and casual.

"You’ve arrived. Oh, it seems your hunt was also satisfying. Your strength has grown quite a bit. That’s good." She said, a little surprised, though she didn’t show it.

Cairen didn’t reply. He only observed the way she stood.

Her clothes were torn in many places, signs of constant battles. Yet her posture remained impeccable.

She somehow seemed stronger. Not in cultivation, but it seemed she had managed to ease the hunger of her bloodline.

"I can also see that you’re better now." Ling continued, wiping a streak of blood from her face.

"Your nightmare hasn’t returned, has it? I can see your expression looks normal again." She added.

"Why do you keep asking about things you know I won’t answer?" he said coldly.

Ling smiled, a faint gleam crossing her eyes.

"Because I can. And one day, you’ll end up answering me. I know it."

Cairen looked away, impatient.

"Tsk. Enough. Only a few hours left, we should return."

"All right. I’ll guide you back."

She then took a strangely colored stone from her cloak.

A kind of compass that pulsed with a faint light as she held it.

Ling observed the direction pointed by the object and began walking, her steps firm and silent.

Cairen followed her at a distance, still alert to any beasts nearby.

For a while, they walked in silence, accompanied only by the sounds of the forest.

As they continued, Cairen thought about what was to come.

The system had been clear. Showing the power of the Fallen was only the beginning.

The War Academy was his new and main objective. There was still some time before their departure. But he needed to prepare well.
