Chapter 320: Chapter 319

Wang Liansheng returned to Huicheng alone. The house used to be bustling with adults and children, but now it felt empty and desolate.

He shook his head with a wry smile, realizing he needed to arrange the transfer as soon as possible.

Fortunately, his elder brother and sister-in-law hadn’t forgotten about him and sent Hongbing to call him over for dinner.

His sister-in-law rented a house near the health school, a small courtyard with three rooms. Although it was an old house over a decade old, it was still in decent shape.

Hongbing had grown into a young lad, nearly 1.6 meters tall, riding his bicycle swiftly like the wind. After calling out to him, he turned his head and pedaled away in the blink of an eye.

Wang Liansheng closed the door and rode his own bicycle. He felt he was riding at a good pace, but still couldn’t catch up.

By the time he arrived, Hongbing was already helping his sister-in-law move tables and set up chairs. When he saw Wang Liansheng enter, he grunted a greeting, "Uncle," and then continued his work in silence.

Wang Lianqi came out carrying a plate of food and, seeing his youngest son like this, angrily glared at him, then turned to his fourth brother and complained, "Just like Lao Da at that age, twelve or thirteen, initially a little rascal, suddenly becomes taciturn. Too noisy and they drive you crazy, too quiet, and you feel stifled."

Sister-in-law Zhao Erni also came out with a bowl of food, chiming in, "Girls are better. Take Hongling, even Hong Zhi; they were mischievous a few years back, but grew up to know their manners, unlike this clueless boy, who sees nothing."

As she spoke, the girls Hong Zhi and Hongling returned with their aunt. They greeted everyone with smiles, indeed looking quite pleasing.

Wang Liansheng raised his glass and clinked it with his brother, sighed while sipping his drink, "Now I’m back to being a lone wolf, with no one around."

The remark made everyone laugh, and Wang Lianqi heartily patted his brother’s shoulder, "I have plenty here, pick any you like and take them with you."

Before he could finish, his sister-in-law gave him a side-eye, and the elder brother could only respond with a silly laugh.

When Wang Liansheng finished eating and was about to leave, he reached the entrance and saw Old Ling standing there with his hands behind his back. Next to him was the youngest son from his second brother’s family, Ke Jing, looking spirited.

Wang Liansheng quickly dismounted his bicycle and greeted, "Dad, when did you get here? Let’s head home quickly."

Ling Father looked at his son-in-law and waved his hand, saying, "I’m just out for a walk and thought to check on things. If you find anything inconvenient being alone at home, let your two sisters-in-law know. Any mending or washing, just let them handle it."

Wang Liansheng responded with a smile, "Dad, don’t worry. Chengyan bought me two new outfits. I’m wearing new clothes, no need for mending."

Ling Father glared at him and laughed, "Our Ling family’s daughter is earnest; whoever she cares for, she does with her whole heart. You better not fail her in the future."

"I wouldn’t dare," Wang Liansheng promised quickly.

After exchanging a few words, Ling Father left a lunchbox behind and, with his hands behind his back and supported by his grandson, strolled away.

Wang Liansheng opened the lunchbox at home to find it filled with his favorite dumplings, stuffed with thin skin and large portions of leek and pork.

Looking at the box of dumplings, Wang Liansheng sighed. It had been over a decade since he left the Ling family. Back then, his departure was unavoidable and understandable, but the distance and time had naturally cooled feelings.

Even knowing Ling Father and his two brothers were kind and sincere, not only did Wang Liansheng feel distant, but his wife and her family seemed to feel a barrier, never as close as their own family.

Relationships are cultivated over time. Initially, Wang Liansheng thought with the Ling family moving back, proximity would nurture closeness. But now, with them moving to the provincial city, the growing closeness might fade again due to the distance.

This time, Ling Chengyan didn’t mention anything about the brothers, and Wang Liansheng wasn’t aware that his father-in-law and the two brothers had already decided not to let his wife’s family’s move to affect their relationship.

Meanwhile, in the provincial city, Ling Chengyan, learning about the situation with Old Lian, decided to buy some fruits and visit the hospital.

Old Lian’s secretary and driver were not around, and no one was there to assist him. After confirming his identity, a local staff member was assigned to take care of him along with an experienced middle-aged female nurse.

When Ling Chengyan arrived, a group of local staff had just come to visit and were leaving. They looked slightly surprised to see her in her military uniform.

After acknowledging with a nod, she was about to enter, but someone who participated in the rescue last night recognized her and greeted her, introducing, "This is Captain Ling who supervised the rescue last night. Thanks to her decisive actions, Old Lian was brought up for emergency treatment in time."

The staff members immediately smiled and came forward to shake hands with and thank Ling Chengyan.

Not fond of such situations, Ling Chengyan endured it with patience and humbly said, "Just doing my duty, no need for thanks."

It took some time to send the group on their way before she entered the ward. The nursing staff had gone to see them off, leaving only the hired nurse inside, who was carefully observing the IV drip.

Upon entering, the nurse quickly greeted Ling Chengyan, took the fruit from her, and ushered her in, "The old man woke up briefly this morning but soon fell unconscious again and hasn’t woken since..."

Ling Chengyan approached the bed and looked to see Old Lian receiving oxygen, his face pale due to blood loss.

She was about to step back when she suddenly heard Old Lian murmur something.

Pausing her steps, she saw Old Lian move his eyelids and open his eyes.

"Old Mr. Lian?" Ling Chengyan bent down and called out.

Having been unconscious for a while, Old Lian was dazed upon waking. His eyes were unfocused as they fell on the ceiling, and after two or three seconds, his pupils moved as if focusing and regained brightness before fixing on Ling Chengyan’s face.

"Liansheng... daughter-in-law," Old Lian struggled to speak through the oxygen mask, his words barely intelligible.

Not quite catching what he said, Ling Chengyan instructed the nurse, "Quick, get the doctor over."

The nurse quickly complied and ran out, soon returning with several doctors and nurses.

Ling Chengyan stepped aside to watch the doctors and nurses conduct a series of checks, as the staff member returned.

Smiling, the doctor said, "Old Mr. Lian is conscious again, which indicates no serious danger now. With proper care and treatment, he should be fine."

The staff followed the doctor out, presumably to report to the leadership.

The room was left with just Ling Chengyan and the nurse once more.

Having experience caring for Ling Father, she asked the doctors about Lian’s condition—whether he could ingest food and how long the oxygen mask would be necessary.

Following the doctor’s instructions, she prepared some warm water and spoon-fed it to Old Lian.
