THE FORGOTTEN HEIRESS-Chapter 380: An Irresistible Pull
Steffan felt relieved that at least Lauren wasn’t dating George rather he was the one who’s been engaged to her.
He wanted to warn her that although they were not dating, his manly instinct told him that George was in love with Lauren, but it could also be the same as Dolly’s, so he kept it to himself.
The most important thing now was that they had been in love, and that connection, no matter how lost in the fog of his amnesia it was, had to mean something. He couldn’t let go of the idea that somewhere deep inside him, the man who had loved Lauren still existed.
Finally, he took a deep breath, turning to her with a resolve he hadn’t felt before.
"Lauren, I can’t promise that everything will come back to me. I can’t promise that I’ll remember our past, our plans, or the way I felt about you back then. But what I can promise is that I’m not giving up. I’m here now, and I want to try. Even without those memories I still feel an irresistible pull towards you."
Lauren’s eyes widened, her breath hitching in surprise. "You... you want to try? Does it mean you believe me?"
"Of course," Steffan said firmly, his gaze locked on hers. "I may not remember the past, but I know that I feel something when I’m with you, something that tells me you’re important to me. That’s enough for me to believe you without confirming with anyone. I don’t want to live in this constant state of confusion anymore, wondering what I’ve lost. If there’s a chance we can rebuild something, I want to take it."
Her tears flowed freely now, but this time, there was a flicker of hope in her eyes. "I was so afraid you’d push me away once you knew the truth. I was afraid I’d lose you all over again."
Steffan’s expression softened, a hint of a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "You haven’t lost me, Lauren. I may not be the same man you fell in love with, but I want to find out who that man was to you. And maybe, just maybe, we can create something new together along the way."
Lauren’s tears gave way to a shaky laugh, a sound filled with both relief and a cautious optimism. "You really think we can do that?"
"I think we have to try," Steffan replied, reaching out and gently taking her hand. "We deserve that much, don’t you think?"
She squeezed his hand in return, her eyes glistening with different emotions. "Yeah," she whispered in a trembling voice. "We do."
As the car pulled up in front of her apartment, Steffan’s grip on her hand tightened. Although he hadn’t been there since the accident, he didn’t feel like he was coming there for the first time.
"Now hurry inside and get ready for the party. I’ll be back to pick you by 7pm."
"Alright," As Lauren placed her hand on the seatbelt, Steffan’s hand wrapped around hers.
Lauren turned her head to face him and before she could ask what the problem was, he reached up, tilted her chin so she could meet his gaze.
"With or without our past memories, I’ve come to love and appreciate you, Lauren." 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
Lauren’s heart stuttered in her chest as Steffan’s words lingered in the air between them. She was still holding onto the seatbelt, but her fingers were tingling, her pulse racing as she tried to process what he’d just said.
With or without our past memories, I’ve come to love and appreciate you. The depth of his voice, the sincerity etched in every word, made something that she’d been holding back for far too long inside her break free.
She searched his eyes for any sign of hesitation or doubt, but found none. There was only resolve and a steady certainty that made her throat tighten.
For a moment, neither of them moved. They were locked in place, staring at each other as if they were seeing each other for the first time all over again.
The past, with all its bittersweet memories, was still there, almost like a ghost that lingered in the corners of both their minds. But right now, the future felt more tangible, more real than it ever had.
"Steffan..." she breathed in a voice that was barely above a whisper. Her eyes brimmed with tears, but this time, they weren’t tears of sorrow or regret, they were tears of joy at the sudden turn of events.
Steffan leaned in closer as his thumb brushed against her chin with a tenderness that made her feel like she was melting from the inside out.
The warmth of his touch coupled with the intensity of his gaze, sent a shiver down her spine. "I know it’s hard," he murmured, his voice low and soothing. "And I also know it’s going to take some time for me to find my way again. But I don’t want to waste another minute pretending like I don’t care about you, Lauren. Because I do. More than I can even understand myself."
She bit her lip, struggling to contain the swirl of emotions threatening to overwhelm her. It was everything she’d ever wanted to hear from him, and yet, it felt almost too good to be true.
Could today be any better? First it was emerging as the winner of the competition despite all the hurdles they had to cross and now this.
It was beyond her wildest imagination that she would have a double celebration today.
Before she could respond, Steffan closed the distance between them. His hand slid from her chin to cup her cheek, his fingers weaving gently through her hair.
The world outside the car faded away until all that was left was the space between them, charged with the unspoken emotions that had been building for far too long.
Lauren’s breath hitched as his lips brushed against hers, a feather-light touch that sent electricity racing through her veins.
The kiss was soft and hesitant, as if he was testing the waters, unsure if she would pull away. But she didn’t. She couldn’t.
Instead, she leaned into him, her heart pounding wildly as she returned the kiss with all the pent-up longing she’d kept caged since the last time they met at the hospital.
The kiss deepened, and with it, something shifted in both of them. Somehow, it wasn’t the same as before but entirely different from all the kisses they’d shared since he woke up.
When they finally broke apart, both of them were breathless, their foreheads resting against each other as they struggled to steady their racing hearts.
The air between them was thick with unspoken words and emotions that neither of them knew how to fully articulate.
Lauren’s voice was shaky when she finally spoke. "I never thought I’d hear you say that. I was so scared that... that the man I fell in love with was gone forever."
Steffan’s grip on her tightened slightly, his thumb gently caressing her cheek as he looked into her eyes. "Maybe I’m not exactly the same man," he admitted softly.
"But I want to be that man and even more. Maybe this time, we can build something even stronger."
