THE FORGOTTEN HEIRESS-Chapter 402: You’re An Orphan
The minutes ticked by, each one a reminder of how far she still was from what she desired.
She turned her back to Steffan and pulled up the covers so tightly around her as if it could shield her from the sting of rejection.
But how possible was it that a man would sleep so deep and have no reaction whatsoever to all what she did to him when he didn’t take any sleeping pills.
All of a sudden an unsettling thought flashed through her mind.
Is it possible that memory loss can affect a man’s libido?
Before drifting off to sleep, she made up her mind to her him tested as soon as possible.
The following morning, Dolly woke up tired and spent like someone who had done some hard labour the previous night.
What angered her the most was that it wasn’t from any productive activity. She couldn’t help but envy those women who would complain that they couldn’t lift their limbs after an entire night of entangling with their lovers.
She turned to glare at the man who was responsible for her ill mood and scowled when she saw him still sleeping like a baby.
If she had not prepared the food herself, coupled with the fact that no one was staying with them, she would have doubted if he had said he wasn’t drugged.
How can he still sleep so soundly without a single care in the world when she was pining away each day.
Against her good judgment she stopped to admire his handsome features and the lashes that framed his eyes. They were as long as that of a woman’s.
Why would nature be this partial? She, a woman that needed it had to rely on extensions while a man that had no need of such a beautiful asset was generously endowed with it.
A pang of jealousy shot through her, but it didn’t top her from leaning in to give him a kiss.
Her lips were mere inches away from his when she last night’s torture resurfaced in her mind and she pulled back.
"Steffan... Steffan, wake up," she said, tapping him on the arm. Other mornings, she usually woke him up with a kiss, but she was yet to get over last night’s rejection.
If she could make him realize how offended she is, maybe he might want to make it up to her. This morning would have been a good time to test him but she had a tight schedule this morning at the hospital.
She tappped him again and Steffan stired from his sleep, looking around as if he expected to find his elf somewhere else.
"Wh... who ... what am I doing here?" He asked as he stared at her.
Dolly released a helpless sigh. He’s always like this every morning. She wondered when this will finally end.
"This is your house and you’re in your bed with your wife. How often do I need to tell you that?"
"Oh," Steffan said as that same melancholy expression clouded his features and he withdrew into himself, shutting out everything as usual... including Dolly.
Dolly threw off the covers, unable to stay in bed any longer.
"And good morning to you too," she snorted as she tied her hair back to keep it from interfering with her morning chores.
"Good morning," Steffan mumbled in response before heading to the bathroom.
Dolly’s gaze followed him until he disappeared into the bathroom.
"At least you still have the morning erection. All hope is not lost," she muttered to herself as she left the bedroom.
She had noticed the telltale tent pitched in his pajamas as he left the bed and had to resist the temptation to go after him.
After preparing breakfast, which lacked the enthusiasm with which she had prepared dinner last night, she went to freshen up.
"I want to go with you to the city," Steffan said all of a sudden as he sipped on his coffee leisurely.
Dolly on the other hand nearly choked on the egg she had just chewed and was about to swallow.
"Take this," Steffan said, handing her the glass of water on the table.
"What did you say?" She repeated when she was able to compose herself.
"I’m tired of being holed up here all day. I think a trip to the city will do me some good. Don’t you think?"
"I’ve told you times without number that it is not safe for you yet. Those people might still be after you. Do you want to be killed?"
"What are the people you always talk about?" Steffan asked, and for the first time since he regained consciousness, Dolly saw him display a bit of emotion.
She carefully placed her cutlery on the table and took a sip of juice to wash down the food in her mouth.
"The ones that shot at you and wanted to kill you. The ones I rescued you from when I accidentally passed by and saw them beating you up. The ones that kicked me and made me lose our baby."
"Why do you think I’ve been trying so hard to keep you from them? It’s because I don’t want to lose you just like I lost our baby."
"We were so happy waiting for her arrival and ...." Dolly dissolved into sobs, her body shaking so bad that Steffan had to move over to cradle her in his arms.
"I get it," Steffan said softly. "It’s just... I always feel that you’re not the only family I have. I feel that there is another family out there that might be looking for me," he said.
Dolly’s face took on a pitiful look. "As hard as it is for me to say this, you’re an orphan, darling. I’m your only family and of course, our innocent baby that had to pay with his life," Dolly said as she rubbed her flat stomach.
Steffan winced as he heard that. "I’m an orphan?" he half muttered to himself.
"Unfortunately, yes, darling." Sensing his sadness, Dolly feigned compassion. "I never wanted to tell you this... but you keep insisting. Now I have no choice. The only family you had outside me was your uncle who I’m afraid was the mastermind behind your attempted murder."
"They believe you are dead, and it’s best we keep it that way until you are strong enough to confront them," she said.
Steffan nodded, a pensive look on his face. He has no other family? And the only uncle he had wanted him dead? Why?
"I have to go, darling. Take care of yourself and please, listen to me and don’t put yourself in any danger. I don’t know what if do if I lose you. Okay?" Dolly asked, rising to her feet.
"Humph!"
"Call me if you need anything, and don’t forget to take your drugs," she added as she placed a lingering kiss on his lips.
Steffan followed her outside and waited for her to enter the car. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢
The moment Dolly’s vehicle disappeared down the driveway, Steffan’s expression transformed.
The vacant, indifferent mask he wore with Dolly vanished, replaced by a fierce, calculating glare that could freeze anyone in their tracks.
"An orphan, huh?" he sneered under his breath.
