Chapter 404: Responsible For His Death

Steffan nodded, more to himself than to his brother as he couldn’t see him. "I just hope this ends soon. Every day with Dolly feels like living in the midst of worms with claws. But I’ll hold on... for Lauren’s sake," he added.

"Good. Stay strong, brother. Keep your guard up around Dolly, she’s very cunning and smart and will pick up on any mistakes. We’re close, and we can’t afford any slip-ups now."

"I won’t let anything ruin this," Steffan said with quiet determination. "For Lauren, I’ll endure it all."

Stanley’s voice softened. "I know you will. And remember, I’m just a call away. Don’t hesitate if you need anything."

"That old woman you sent has been doing a great job."

"I know she’s reliable, that was why I chose her. Has she been around today?" Stanley asked.

"Not yet, but she should any moment from now," Steffan said as he glanced at his wrist watch. "And thanks for everything."

"You’re my brother, of course I’d do anything for you," Stanley said dismissively. "I’ll hang up now. Take care of yourself... for us," he added.

"I sure will."

Steffan stood staring at the blank screen for some minutes, his mind all wrapped up in the image of a suffering Lauren, weeping or perhaps moping around all day with a deep sense of guilt and loss.

He couldn’t wait to get back and wrap her in his arms and tell her that it was all over with a promise to make her the happiest woman on earth. But he just had to endure, if not for anything, at least for Lauren. For her, he would see this through to the bitter end, he reminded himself, as he brushed his hair after putting on his trousers and t-shirt.

He didn’t bother to style his hair as he didn’t want to draw unnecessary attention from Dolly, but does that even count? Even if he looked like a drag, Dolly will still find him attractive. He had never seen this level of foolish obsession before.

He couldn’t help but wonder why he had been so blind to Dolly’s dubious heart all these years that he took her as his buddy.

If not for Lauren who forced her into admitting her feelings for him, he wouldn’t have known her true colors.

It was like a new personality had emerged in her after her confession.

It got worse after he regained consciousness and found himself all alone with Dolly in an unfamiliar place.

The smile and look on her face had been too scary and indescribable that he had pretended to have completely lost his memory after regaining consciousness.

He didn’t fail to notice the excitement in Dolly’s eyes when she heard that though she had quickly masked it.

It was then that Dolly started feeding him with all the inconceivable lies that she could come up with.

She had started with telling him that this was their home and that she was the one that had "rescued" him from the gunmen that were after his life.

If he hadn’t seen the men dragging Lauren after dealing him that knockout blow on the head, he would have been tempted to believe her.

That blow dealt to his head had not only knocked him out, but ended up restoring his full memory when he woke up,

The event at the wedding had come rushing back along with all what happened during his partial amnesia.

Even the proposal before Lauren took him to that old cottage and their little rendezvous at the old cottage came rushing back to him.

He had wondered why Lauren was suddenly taken away, leaving him by the roadside and why it was Dolly who eventually "rescued" him, considering the location of the fight.

If indeed she knew nothing about what happened, why did she suddenly appear out of nowhere to save him when it was not the route to her house. Besides they had left her in the hospital when he took Lauren out for her.

So that means she had been trailing them and sent people to attack them.

Capitalizing on his seemingly loss of memory, he had introduced herself as his wife and lied to him that they were happily married the moment he regained consciousness?

He had happily played along, waiting to unravel what she’s up to.

But when she cruelly told him that he was an orphan, he almost blew his cover today but had to restrain himself. Since she loves the world orphan, he’ll make sure she ends up as an orphan.

Last night was another one he thought he wouldn’t be able to survive, but thank God for the topical anesthetic cream the woman had prepared for him earlier. She had packaged it in an aftershave bottle to avoid any suspicions from Dolly.

Since Dolly was also a doctor, he had ensured the brand they got was the one mixed with slight fragrance which did well to mask the chemical odor.

Even though he had used a formulation that absorbs well, he’d spent a long time in the bathroom rubbing it in thoroughly to avoid its detection. He had left the shower running... pretending to still take his bath while doing all these.

So when he had emerged from the bathroom, Dolly had only seen a well shaved gentleman dripping with water that he had just sprayed in his hair just for the effect.

Besides she was too wired up and horny to notice anything unusual even though there might have been any as she joined him in bed. She only concluded that he had fallen into a strange deep slumber.

Coupled with the disgust and deep rooted hatred he had for her, it went a long way in keeping him mentally detached from the whole nonsense she was doing with his body the entire night.

But he still has to put an end to this as soon as possible because if a repeat or something close to what he’d had to endure last night occurred, he’s sure he might just not be able to hold back from strangling her. His hands that were made to save lives would end up taking a life.

He quickly settled some things with the woman that came to clean up who also helped him with some chores. made all the calls he needed to make and when heard the sound of a car pulling up in the driveway, he reverted back to his melancholy mood, taking his place on the recliner by the window.

"I’m back, Steff, darling," Dolly’s voice entered the house before she even made an appearance.

"Did you miss me? Of course you did," Dolly answered her own question as she plastered a kiss on his cheeks.

She was very impressed with the level of obedience and compliance Steffan had shown these two months.

She’s had no course to rush back from the report of the people she had asked to watch Steffan in the neighborhood. Maybe it’s time she asked them to retire.

Now that he knows he’s an orphan and that his life is still at risk, he’ll have no need to want to leave the safe sanctuary of her home.

"Guess what sweetheart, I have good news for us," she announced happily even though Steffan had not responded to any of her greetings.
