The Gentleman at the End-Chapter 750 - 748: Fright Night
[Chapter.2 A Night of Terror]
As Yi Chen, playing the role of the eldest daughter Jennifer, changed her costume, the Gu worm adhering to her back also shriveled up and perfectly concealed itself.
She donned a relatively light down jacket and jeans, tied her hair in a ponytail, and walked out of the bathroom.
Little did she know, her fiancé Calvin had just returned from outside,
his shoulders bearing some remnants of water stains, seemingly formed by melting snow,
his hands not carrying any candles, but instead, he was slinging a huge travel bag, appearing very exhausted.
Out of dedication to her role, Jennifer still asked, "Calvin, where have you been?"
Calvin pushed his glasses up, his facial expression switching from ice-cold to his usual tenderness in an instant, "Isn’t it obvious I’m preparing to stay the night? I went out to fetch the luggage from the car, just in case we need to clear some snow tomorrow."
With that, Calvin pulled out a metal snow shovel from the travel bag and shook it in front of his fiancée.
"Hmm... I’m going out for a bit."
As Jennifer was about to leave the room with the candelabra,
Snap! Her wrist was grasped suddenly.
"Dear, where are you going at this late hour? The blizzard just shattered the restaurant’s glass windows. Besides, you don’t seem keen on bumping into your father, right?
Why not stay in the room with me, and we can try to leave this place first thing tomorrow morning."
Calvin then pressed his body closer, his stubbled chin rubbing gently against Jennifer’s shoulder, and she could even feel something pressing against her spine from behind.
Following that, fiancé Calvin also tried to lightly kiss the sensitive spot below her earlobe.
Jennifer abruptly dodged, twisting her foot and turning around, almost instinctively delivering a lethal hand blade. She forcibly stabilized her expression by relying on her breathing technique for emotional control.
"Not in the mood tonight. I’m going out for a walk, to get some fresh air."
"Alright, dear~ Remember to come back soon, and if you run into any danger, remember to call out loudly, and I will rush over to help at once... No offense, but I always feel like there’s something dangerous about your family’s ancestral home," Calvin said.
"Just be careful yourself," Jennifer replied.
Carrying the candelabra, Jennifer left the room while her fiancé maintained a creepy smile and waving gesture throughout.
Once the door closed, Calvin muttered to himself as if he had already guessed the corresponding real identity behind Jennifer.
However, instead of secretly following her, he straddled the luggage bag and directly climbed out of the window.
...
In the hallway.
Yi Chen, who was playing Jennifer, had just left the room and immediately extinguished the candle in her hand, her expression becoming gloomy.
Recalling the recent intimate contact with the male made her whole body uncomfortable, even wanting to cut off the touched parts completely with a dagger.
The script hadn’t detailed such intimacy between the two, it was completely the fiancé’s impromptu performance, and the expertise displayed in such intimate actions likely meant that one of the small jokers from the "Two Kings" was playing the role.
Of course, it could also be the seductive octopus lady known among the Deep Sea.
The mere thought that the man could have been played by Art made Yi Chen even more disgusted.
After calming her mind through breathing regulation, she continued playing her current role, undertaking the main mission - ’to kill the master of the mansion, Leidun Bell.’
As long as this was accomplished, Yi Chen’s "danger level" would be temporarily paused, allowing her to remain in a state of safety.
Yi Chen was very clear on what the real danger was; he didn’t want to have another deadly encounter with the villainess from William’s storybook; he might actually die here.
The reason he risked participating in this performance was one, at William’s request - according to the circus’s rules, both the chief and deputy had to participate in every performance.
The other reason was that an evil character like Art was also participating, which greatly intrigued Yi Chen,
his very nature was to erase the evils of this world, and Art was precisely the most prominent "Evil" in the Old World.
This was a perfect opportunity to test Art, break his longstanding mysterious aura, and even attempt a complete eradication.
Walking along the pitch-dark corridor, Yi Chen felt a sense of coming home; with each step, the 3D model of the mansion in his brain filled out more and more.
Affinity with darkness was an innate ability of Yi Chen.
According to the memories obtained from the identity card, Leidun Bell, as the head of the house, spent most of his time in the study on the first floor, though it was unclear whether he was working or doing something else.
Just as Yi Chen reached the staircase and was about to head to the first floor,
Footsteps unexpectedly came from the lower end, accompanied by the upward movement of candlelight. Yi Chen quickly positioned himself in the corner, watching the staircase intently.
It was also the nanny Ima coming up,
but her expression was off. Instead of the gentleness when they met, now her face was pale, amplified several times by the candlelight in front of her chest.
She had planned to walk to the right, but suddenly seemed to sense something, and turned around abruptly! The candlelight revealed Jennifer, leaning against the corner of the wall.
For an instant, as they looked at each other,
nanny Ima immediately switched to a gentle expression, while Yi Chen pretended to be startled, also carrying a trace of sorrow in his eyes.
"Jennifer, what are you doing here?"
"I just wanted to be alone for a while."
Nanny Ima immediately caught onto an issue, "Did Mr. Calvin bully you? Do you need me to reprimand that youngster for you?"
"No, I just purely wanted to go out for a walk, Calvin hasn’t done anything to me."
"That’s good then. I just came out of the master’s study; he is busy with some things. You should try not to disturb him.
Although the master is indeed a bit unapproachable, he is still very impressive.
Since he disapproved of your fiance, you must be more careful, perhaps Mr. Calvin isn’t as good as you think."
"I can judge for myself."
"Well, do not stay out too long, go back to rest early. If you have any concerns, you can come and sleep with me, just like when you were little."
Nanny Ima gently touched Yi Chen’s head and left, heading in the direction of the couple’s guest room, seemingly planning to talk with the fiance in private.
Yi Chen, now hidden in the darkness once more, felt thoroughly annoyed,
and tired by the numerous rules of the Performance. Unfortunately, "killing" could not be done arbitrarily, it must adhere to the script and the character.
If Yi Chen had acted just now to kill the nanny who cared about him most in the script, it would be a complete violation of the performance, even destroying the play, and the "danger level" would instantly spike.
From the recent interaction, Yi Chen still couldn’t figure out the identity of the nanny,
so he could only continue to follow the character’s motive, descending the stairs towards Leidun Bell’s study.
No sooner had he reached the first floor and turned around than he bumped into another person,
who reeked of smoke. Looking up, it was none other than the officer Sebastian Wilkeson, forced to stay in the estate.
The other was also moving through the dark, without any candlelight and almost no sound of footsteps, suspicious behavior.
"Isn’t this Miss Jennifer? What a coincidence. Leidun is busy, I advise you not to disturb him for now."
Yi Chen, being the eldest daughter, simply ignored the non-family member, brushing past him.
But just after one step! Click~ the sound of a gun safety echoed, a cold muzzle pressing against the back of her head.
"If you are contemplating killing the master tonight because of the incident at the dinner table, then I will be the first to blow your head off with a gun. Be careful! I will be watching you."
Having spoken, the gun was withdrawn.
When Yi Chen abruptly turned her head, the officer had moved up the stairs, visible only by his thick-soled boots.
In that moment, the hidden Nash felt a tremendously intense surge of killing intent, making it twist all over, urgently telepathically sending, "Second boss, calm down! Calm down! If you chase after him and kill him, your identity will be exposed, and without sufficient motive, you will be targeted by danger!
I’ll massage your shoulders!
If needed, I can massage the bear too!"
"Scram!"
Regaining control of his emotions, Yi Chen continued through the last corridor until he finally arrived at the study door.
As he raised his hand to knock, the door of the study unexpectedly swung open,
the candle overturned on the floor,
and the estate’s master, Leidun Bell, lay on the ground, his face smashed beyond recognition, and his abdomen fully dissected, intestines hanging across every corner of the room.
Yi Chen’s killing intent flared out, confirming the man was thoroughly dead, shockingly.
"Silver Circle patient killed so soon, and I didn’t even sense any commotion... Was it Art’s doing? The nanny, the officer, or maybe the fiance who went out to get the luggage earlier?"
