Chapter 183: We’ll Talk at Home

Lane sighed, once again schooling his expression before turning around.

"What do you want?" he snapped, not even trying to sound polite. Or to act sarcastic. He was in no mood for that, and had no time.

Not affected by Lane’s attitude in the slightest, Miles simply responded, "We need to talk."

That never bode well.

"Well, then have fun talking! I’m out." Lane turned around on the spot, ready to walk away...

But how could it be so easy? Miles clearly meant business this time. Thus, a wall of blue flames flared up in front of Lane, blocking his way.

Using abilities in an unauthorized way? A common Allen trait! One of the few that Lane would (begrudgingly) admit he also shared.

However, lax with the use of his abilities as he usually was, he couldn’t use any right now, not in front of Miles. Showing even a fraction of his power would ruin all of his efforts, all of those years in hiding. So, he had no choice but to stop, and turn around to face the man once again.

"Fine. But, can we make it quick? As you might be aware, my place is currently inaccessible, so I’d like to find somewhere to stay, and get some rest."

Miles sized him up and down, his grey eyes cold and emotionless, as always. "That won’t be necessary. You will be staying in our mansion from now on."

"...What?" Lane tilted his head. For a good moment, he thought, no, he was almost certain that he had misheard. Or was hallucinating. Maybe something hit his head while his body was still hibernating, his consciousness possessing Oscar’s body, and he was suffering from some brain injury now?

Or Miles was the one with the brain injury. There was no other explanation.

"Me? In the Allen family mansion?" Lane scoffed, almost amused by this ridiculous joke. "Or do you mean some other mansion you own?"

"It is only temporary, of course," Miles continued, without bothering to directly answer Lane’s questions. "I believe we need to keep an eye on you for a while. Have a few conversations, since you seem to have forgotten the conditions under which you were allowed to move out."

’Allowed to move out’ was quite a ’funny’ way to put it, but Lane didn’t care enough to point that out. Instead, he raised a more important question. "What conditions did-"

Or, well, tired. Because he barely got a word out, before Miles cut him off. "I have heard about you getting in contact with a certain Esper."

’Ah.’ Understanding dawned on Lane. "But that wasn’t-"

"We’ll talk about it at home." Once again, Miles didn’t let Lane finish. He raised his hand, signaling the two women standing not far behind him to come forward. "Gia and Savannah will take you home."

Then, not even waiting for any response, he turned around and headed toward the site of the dungeon break.

"Let’s go," Gia commanded, giving Lane a cold glare. Likely annoyed that she had to complete such a tedious task rather than go to the battlefield.

Lane scanned both of his cousins up and down. Gia Collins and Savannah Ross were both Espers, A and B-ranked respectively. Much weaker than Lane... But still competent, experienced Espers nonetheless. They could put up some fight. Not that fighting was even an option right now. If anything, hypnosis would be better...

But even that wasn’t without its problems. Let’s say Lane hypnotized them. And then what? He couldn’t escape, because the Allens would quickly find out that something was off! Gia and Savannah wouldn’t just let him go on their own. And no matter what scenario Lane made them believe in, he would end up in trouble anyway...

"Are you deaf?" Gia snapped, her temper flaring. Just from Lane remaining silent and unmoving for a moment. Not even a minute.

Truly Gracie’s daughter through and through.

"No, I just have this habit of blocking all unpleasant noise," Lane shook his head. Soon, however, he let out a heavy sigh, as he saw Gia turn red. "Fine, let’s go. Lead the way."

It was best to at least try to be cooperative. Maybe then he’d be released sooner. And then he would be able to return to Damien, and start putting his life together in his free time.

He sighed once again, trudging after Savannah. She led the way, while Gia walked behind Lane, her gaze burning holes in his back. Of course, Lane could very well walk first - he knew the way all too well, he couldn’t forget it even if he tried - but if he were to be the one in the lead, he would drag his feet so much it would take them hours just to leave the closed-off zone.

They didn’t walk far. There was a car waiting for them right after the last blockade. The women switched there, Savannah taking over watching Lane, getting together with him in the back, while Gia took the driver’s seat. They saw no issue with this switch. In their belief, Lane was just a powerless F-ranker, so having even one of them watch him was excessive, let alone making them both his escort!

And Lane wouldn’t make them realize the inaccuracy of their judgment, not yet at least. He just stared out of the window, watching the world passing by, going through the area that was less familiar to Lane, who hasn’t approached those parts in years, until they finally entered through a massive gate, driving through the extensive gardens, and finally stopping in front of the house. Well, mansion rather.

The Allen family’s mansion. The place where Lane hoped he wouldn’t have to return to, not until it was finally time to take the whole Allen family down.

Still, despite his unwillingness, he was pushed out of the car, and had no other choice but to helplessly follow his cousins, climbing the familiar steps, and entering the massive marble house. A bit different than he remembered, due to all Mana reinforcements added over the years, but still unpleasantly familiar.

He was ’home’.
