The Heiress Spoiled by Four Brothers and One Devilish CEO-Chapter 235 The Weight of Blood and Choice
Things went quiet the moment Harrison Reid was mentioned.
The guy had been scheming for ages, trying to stir up trouble among the four major families. His goal? Crash them all and come out on top, turning the Reid family into the biggest force in Verduria. Ambition off the charts.
Sure, Nathaniel Cooper pushed him in that direction, but Harrison had that idea in his head long before. He wasn’t exactly innocent in any of this.
Mr. Reid looked over at Tristan Reid. “Tristan, your uncle may have deserved what he got, but whoever killed him can’t just walk free either.”
Megan Shaw instinctively glanced at Tristan. He’d promised her to keep Nicole Flynn safe.
Tristan’s face stayed neutral. “I let the killer go. She played a key role in taking Nathaniel Cooper down. Her merits cancel out her crimes.”
Mr. Reid’s brow furrowed, his fingers tightening around his dragon-head cane. “Your uncle made his bed, sure. But the one who ended his life shouldn’t just be out there like nothing happened. It doesn’t sit right with me.”
Tristan gave a slight, cool smile. “Grandpa, if Uncle hadn’t been blinded by money, power and desire, he wouldn’t have ended up like this. Yes, the killer’s guilty, but she wasn’t exactly free to choose.”
Mr. Reid raised his hand, signaling to stop. “Nathan, take me to my room. I need to lie down.”
He didn’t wanna hear any more. As much as Tristan was stating facts, each word landed like a punch to the chest.
Mr. Reid knew full well what a mess Harrison’s life had been, but still—he was his son. Seeing him lying cold on a mortuary slab, that pale face under the white sheet... it hit hard. No parent’s ever ready for that.
As Nathan helped Mr. Reid out, Tristan turned to the couch and took Megan’s hand. “Grandpa needs quiet. We’ll come back when things settle a bit. Uncle Zach, Aunt Penelope, maybe talk to him when you can. I have my own stand to take. Protecting a key witness is a core part of my job. Without that guarantee, Nathaniel Cooper wouldn’t have been caught so easily. If he got away, that would’ve meant chaos—thousands, maybe millions paying the price in war or bio-terror. Megan and I are heading out. Give Grandpa some peace.”
Megan gave everyone a slight nod, her hand slipping into Tristan’s as they walked out together.
In the car, Tristan had one hand on the wheel, the other intertwining his fingers with hers.
The silence between them hung heavy.
Megan gently rubbed the back of his hand, tracing the veins with her thumb. “You know they say there are three great tragedies in life—losing your mom young, your wife in midlife, and your child in old age. Grandpa’s been through all of them. No matter how messed up Uncle was, he was still Grandpa’s kid. No parent ever really gives up on their child. Loving one child more isn’t a crime.”
Tristan let out a low laugh at that last line. “Not a crime? So when Wyatt Reid died... what do you think Dad felt?”
“I guess... he felt sad?” she offered.
Tristan shook his head. “Sophia Carter and Wyatt were his biggest regrets. Zero emotional attachment, even though Wyatt was his flesh and blood. Just having them around reminded him of the shame he could never escape. He never cared about Wyatt, not even a little. Still, it’s fair to say Wyatt turning out the way he did... Dad was part of that story.”
Megan went quiet. There wasn’t much more to say—who was right or wrong didn’t matter anymore.
After a while, she tightened her grip on his hand. “Don’t hold it against Grandpa, okay?”
Tristan glanced at her. “He’ll figure it out.”
An hour later, their car pulled up at the Lewis family’s old estate in Lindon City.Stella Banks had already been waiting at the door. The moment she saw Megan Shaw, she practically ran over. “You little rascal! Snuck back to the capital without a word, then I heard you got kidnapped! My poor heart couldn’t take it!”
She glanced at Tristan Reid. “You’ve been taking the heat for being a scumbag lately, huh? Must’ve been tough on you.”
Tristan chuckled. “As long as mom doesn’t ask Megan to get rid of the baby again, all’s good.”
Stella looked a bit awkward, giving a weak laugh. “Come on, you gotta understand where I was coming from. Megan’s still young, and I was mad at you then. I didn’t really mean it! Don’t take it to heart, okay? But seriously, no more scandals like that, alright? Megan can handle herself, sure, but I’m not made of stone.”
Just then, Zachary Lewis came over, smiling. “Alright, alright. It’s getting chilly out here. Let’s talk inside before someone catches a cold.”
Stella hugged Megan as they walked in. “By the way, your second brother brought his girlfriend home today.”
“Girlfriend?” Megan raised a brow.
Stella grinned with a hand by her lips. “She’s such a looker. Like, super fresh and glowing.”
“Oh really? Then I have to see her for myself,” Megan mumbled, “Keeping secrets, huh?”
As soon as they stepped in, Megan spotted a girl sitting on the couch—porcelain skin, soft and gentle features, really easy on the eyes.
The girl put down her tea cup, stood up with a polite smile, and nodded slightly at Megan.
Then Jason Lewis came striding over and pulled Megan into a big hug. “Sis, we were scared to death these past days, worrying something might happen to you.”
Megan tutted playfully. “Still had time to date, though?” 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮
Jason blinked and glanced at Stella. “Mom’s exaggerating again. She’s not my girlfriend—she’s an actress I’m working with. The director asked me to bring her along to the set. Then mom called saying you were back, so I rushed over to see you guys. Gotta head out again soon.”
Megan got the idea and smiled. “You know mom’s been desperate for a daughter-in-law. She’d be over the moon if you brought one home. She’s really pretty, though. New actress?”
Jason nodded. “Michelle Irwin. Just debuted. She’s got a bright future ahead of her.”
Michelle stepped up and offered her hand. “Hi, I’m Michelle.”
Her voice was sweet, like the sound of a fresh mountain spring—really soothing.
Her skin was flawless, soft as silk.
Megan shook her hand. “Nice to meet you. I’m Megan. You must be something special—my brother’s never brought a girl home before, and here you are.”
Michelle’s cheeks flushed instantly. “That’s really an honor. Mr. Lewis is always so serious on set, this is the first time I’ve seen him this relaxed.”
Megan laughed. “Come by anytime. Once you become my sister-in-law, you’ll see his goofy side a lot more.”
Michelle lowered her head with a shy smile.
Then Jason’s phone rang. He checked the screen—it was the director.
He answered, said a few words, and headed over to the entryway to grab his coat. He handed Michelle her jacket too. “Director’s calling. We gotta go. You and Tristan stay—I’ll be back tonight.”
Michelle put on her coat and wrapped a scarf around herself. She gave a polite nod. “It was really nice meeting all of you. Hope we see each other again.”
As Jason and Michelle walked off, Tristan spoke up. “Things are tense right now. Anyone stepping into the Lewis home should be properly checked.”
