Chapter 277: [ Volume 1] Chaper 277- Unbelievable

Esme leaned back slightly, her balance flawless despite the impossibly thin railing. "Relax, Kai," she said with a smirk. "You’re acting like I’m going to fall."

"Because you are! This isn’t a game, Esme!" His voice was sharper now, but underneath it was a note of genuine concern.

She shrugged, swinging her legs a little, like a child on a swing. "You’re always so serious," she said, her teasing smile never wavering. "You should lighten up."

Kai clenched his fists, his frustration boiling over. "Esme, I’m not joking. Get down. Now."

Her gaze met his, and for a split second, her playful demeanor seemed to falter, but it was gone as quickly as it appeared. "Why do you care so much? Afraid I’ll fail?" she asked, her voice soft but still carrying that edge of challenge.

"You’re impossible," Kai muttered, gripping the railing tightly. His mind raced with ways to get her down without escalating the situation. "Esme, listen to me. Come down before you—"

"Oh, calm down, Kai," she interrupted, rolling her eyes. "I’ve got it under control."

"You’ve got nothing under control," he shot back, his voice low but full of intensity. "Do you even realize how dangerous this is?"

Esme just smiled, dangling the file again. "Dangerous? Only if you don’t trust me."

Kai glared at her, his heart pounding harder with every passing second. He wanted to yell, to grab her and pull her down, but instead, he stood frozen, torn between anger and fear. For all her games, he knew one thing for sure—Esme thrived on chaos, and this moment was no different.

Esme dangled the file from her hand as she leaned even farther back on the railing, a playful smirk tugging at her lips. "What are you so worried about, Kai? Don’t tell me you actually care."

"Esme," Kai warned, his tone sharp with urgency, "stop messing around. This isn’t a joke. Come down before—"

Before he could finish, Esme let go of the railing with one hand, a deliberate motion that made his heart lurch. And then, in one terrifying second, she let go with the other.

"Esme!" Kai shouted, his breath caught in his throat as he rushed forward, every nerve in his body screaming in panic.

But just as his outstretched hand reached for her, Esme’s teasing voice rang out. "Call me?" she said, her tone light and almost musical. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

Kai froze, his heart still hammering in his chest, as he realized she hadn’t fallen. She had crossed her legs over the railing and was now hanging upside down, looking perfectly at ease as she smiled at him.

"Are you insane?!" he roared, his voice breaking slightly from the sheer mix of relief and anger.

Esme tilted her head, still dangling nonchalantly. "You should’ve seen your face. It was priceless," she said, letting out a laugh that only made Kai’s fury boil hotter.

Without another word, Kai lunged forward, grabbing her by the waist and yanking her toward him with enough force to send them both tumbling.

"Whoa!" Esme yelped, caught off guard for once as she toppled over him.

They landed in a heap on the balcony floor, her laughter ringing in his ears as she lay sprawled on top of him. "Easy there, tiger," she teased, her face inches from his.

Kai glared up at her, his chest heaving from the adrenaline. "Do you ever think about anyone other than yourself?" he snapped, his voice filled with exasperation.

Esme’s smirk softened slightly as she met his gaze. "Maybe," she said, her tone quieter now. Then, with a mischievous grin, she added, "But where’s the fun in that?"

Kai let out a groan, covering his face with one hand as he tried to steady his breathing. "You’re impossible," he muttered, though the edge of relief in his voice was unmistakable.

Esme’s teasing smirk faded as she studied Kai’s face, her gaze lingering on the sharp lines of his jaw, the way his lips barely parted in anticipation. The air between them felt thick, charged with something neither of them had acknowledged until now. For a moment, everything else seemed to fade away, the noise of the world outside gone, leaving just the two of them in this suspended moment.

Without warning, Esme leaned in. Kai’s breath caught as she hovered just inches from his lips. Her eyes flicked to his, searching for any sign of resistance, but he was still—too still. For the briefest second, the playful smirk returned to her lips before they brushed against his. The kiss was light, tentative, almost questioning, as if she were testing the waters, feeling the heat of the moment.

Kai froze, his mind spinning, a thousand thoughts running through him. His instincts screamed at him to pull away, to regain control of the situation, but the way her lips moved against his, so soft and yet so intense, kept him rooted. He could feel the electricity between them, sparking in ways he hadn’t imagined.

Then, just as quickly, Esme deepened the kiss. The gentleness vanished, replaced by a hunger, a fierceness that took him completely by surprise. Her hands shifted, fingers tangling in his hair as she pulled him closer, her lips moving against his with urgency, almost as if she were trying to consume him.

Kai’s heart raced, his breath coming in shallow gasps. He tried to respond, his hands reaching for her, pulling her closer, but the moment felt too raw, too powerful. His mind screamed for him to step back, to remind himself who they were, what this meant—but all he could focus on was the heat of her body against his, the intensity of her kiss.

Esme pulled back, just enough for their lips to part. She lingered there, her breath warm against his cheek, her lips barely touching his as she looked down at him, her eyes dark with something unreadable.

"Esme," Kai murmured, his voice rough, his chest rising and falling with every breath. His hands rested against her waist, but he couldn’t find the words. How had they gotten here? Why did everything feel so... inevitable?

Esme’s lips curled into a smirk, a glint of amusement in her eyes. "What’s the matter, Kai?" she whispered, her tone teasing but somehow deeper, more intimate than before. "You look like you have something to say."
